Brussels (dpa) – Tolerance of different cultures is no longer enough: Europeans should create an “inter-cultural society” in which interaction across cultural boundaries is the norm, the European Union’s top cultural official said Friday.

“We want to go beyond multi-cultural societies, where cultures and cultural groups simply coexist side by side: mere tolerance is not enough any more,” the EU’s Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, Jan Figel, said ahead of the official launch of the European Year of Inter-cultural Dialogue 2008.

“We need to give an impulse for a true metamorphosis in our societies, so that we can create an inter-cultural Europe where cultures exchange and interact constructively,” he said.

On Tuesday, top EU officials are set to launch the Year of Inter- cultural Dialogue at a ceremony in Slovenia, the country which currently holds the EU’s six-month rotating presidency.

Why not give Christians who are escaping from Islam a place at the front of the refugee queue?

Christian immigrants, even from such countries as Nigeria or Pakistan, would be much more likely to assimilate fully and pursue gainful employment in the West than their Muslim counterparts. There is a political advantage to be gained here, since anyone who favors giving them preference could not reasonably be termed a “racist” or a “neo-Nazi”.

Western society would benefit from a modest influx of such people, assuming that Muslim immigration could be simultaneously reduced.

Looking relaxed and with short-cropped hair, Dr Haneef yesterday spoke of the damage his detention had caused his career and reputation, during a press conference in India following his return from Mecca.

“I’m hopeful of this because the damages that have been done to my career, my job, my aspirations, and my reputation is far too much … they might try to build up some bridges by compensating me,” he said.

Dr Haneef was arrested while working at the Gold Coast Hospital on July 2 last year and charged 12 days later with supporting a terrorism organisation after his SIM card was linked to a failed bombing of Glasgow airport. The charges were dropped a fortnight later, but then immigration minister Kevin Andrews had already revoked Dr Haneef’s work visa.

The full bench of the Federal Court last month upheld a judge’s earlier decision to reinstate his visa, clearing the way for Dr Haneef to return to Australia.

Dr Haneef said he was yet to decide whether he would return, adding his family wanted assurances he would be safe. “There are a few things in this regard, the first thing would be my family … and I have to discuss this in great detail with them,” he said.

“They need a firm reassurance from the authorities and Australian Federal Police that there wouldn’t be any harm to me … when I go back there.

AN Islamic group accused of trying to seize control of a Sydney mosque is understood to be part of a hardline religious movement that has been linked to the 2005 London bombings.

The Australian has been told that some of the group’s members follow the Tablighi Jamaat stream of Islam, which is under watch by Western intelligence agencies because of its suspected links to terrorism.

The battle for the Sefton mosque in Sydney’s southwest has already resulted in legal action being taken over ownership of the property and the resident imam being kicked out of his home.

Sheik Abdul Karim Quasimi has also been served with an apprehended violence order forcing him to stay away from the Helen Street mosque.

Sheik Abdul Karim, who is not a Tablighi follower, said the group had gone to extremes to remove him, including calling in police to evict him from his home in the middle of the night.

“It was very scary, the police arrived very early in the morning,” he said.

He said the group was attempting an ethnic and religious-based takeover, wanting the mosque exclusively for Bangladeshi Muslims, particularly those who follow Tablighi, to the exclusion of other ethnic groups including Arabic Muslims.

“Some of the Tablighi in Australia are very dogmatic, bordering on extreme,” he said.

The caretaker of the mosque, Mohammed Zantar, said trouble started last year when a number of new members, who are Tablighi, were elected to the 15-strong committee that runs the mosque.

Islamic Friendship Association president Keysar Trad said the move against the imam was unprecedented. “It is a disgrace to seek out an AVO against an imam unless he’s made a major breach of religious teachings or the law,” he said.

The Tablighi are influenced by a fundamentalist branch of Saudi Arabian-based Islam known as Wahabism. The sect has been linked to two July 7 London bombers, and failed shoe bomber Richard Reid is also known to have attended Tablighi meetings.

Californicating Talib Makes Threats Against Bush Middle East Visit

American Al Qaeda leader Adam Gadahn told his followers to welcome Bush “with bombs and traps” upon his upcoming visit to the Middle East this week.

“The occupied territories are awaiting their first visit by the crusader Bush and the mujahideen are also waiting for him,” said Gadahn, a California native and now an Al Qaeda spokesman.

Gadahn is the star of the latest al Qaeda propaganda video to be posted online by the group’s media wing, As Sahab.

In his newest dramatic gesture, Gadahn tore up his U.S. passport in protest of the imprisonment of fellow al Qaeda followers Abu Zubaydah, John Walker Lindh and Sheikh Omar Abdul Rahman.

“I don’t need it to travel anyway,” he said afterwards.

Gadahn made reference to November’s Annapolis conference of Middle Eastern leaders, saying it was a gathering of Bush’s “loyal puppets.” He said the United States has been “unmistakably defeated” in Iraq in Afghanistan and has lost the battle for hearts and minds “in spectacular fashion.”

“They’re about to hand the whole mess over to local proxies who, if they haven’t already, shall soon rue the day they sold their souls and religion to the American devil,” Gadahn said.

Gadahn also made reference to Pakistan, but didn’t mention the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, indicating the video may have been made before her death. Rather, he said Al Qaeda “continues to strike the ruling regime” there as it fights against President Pervez Musharraf’s “farce of elections.”

Gadahn, who is under federal indictment for treason, is believed to be hiding in Pakistan. He left Orange County, Calif., almost 10 years ago for Pakistan and has been a regular feature in al Qaeda videos, at first wearing a mask, but he has been appearing unveiled for more than a year now. He often threatens to continue to target the United States at home and abroad.

Despite his rejection of U.S. citizenship, Gadahn made reference to the mortgage crisis in the United States, saying that it was triggered by right-wing fanatics trying to usher in the “end days.”

MUSLIM women are to be sent on leadership and assertiveness courses to help to prevent Islamic extremism.

In an attempt to stop young Muslims being seduced by Al-Qaeda, women will be sent on training courses designed for FTSE 100 managers to give them the skills and confidence to confront fanatics.

Amid fears that extremists are becoming more sophisticated in their recruitment, Hazel Blears, the communities secretary, has concluded that a key way to stop extremist ideas further permeating Muslim communities is to give “the silent majority” a stronger voice.

She is to publish a good practice guidance document which will say that “resilient communities can only exist where women are playing a full and active part”.

Blears will tell local authorities to use part of a £70m government fund set up to combat extremism to pay for the courses in confidence building, communication and mediation skills.

Muslim women will be offered work placements with business leaders and top athletes to imbue assertiveness and leadership and help them to advance their careers. Funding will be available to set up local Muslim women’s groups to provide a “safe space” where they can discuss their concerns. The plan is likely to attract criticism from some Muslim men who will see it as a threat to cultural traditions about the role of women in society.

The plans have already provoked a mixed response among Muslims. The Muslim Council of Britain accused the government of trying to turn women into government spies. “The government at first wanted our imams to act as spies on young British Muslims and now they seem to want Muslim women to do the same,” said Inayat Bunglawala, the council’s assistant secretary-general.

*  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since informed all of its diplomatic posts … to explain to other countries that the Cabinet has distanced itself from the film.

Comments: (1) That a lone individual, a Rushdie or a Wilders, is in the anomalous position of driving a state’s policy makes this situation so fascinating and anomalous.  

In a strange reversal, governments waited on the statements issued by a private citizen. Never before had this happened. Nor had an individual’s choice of words ever borne so directly on the course of international relations. The situation was especially anomalous in Great Britain, where the authorities at one point felt compelled to deny that they had cleared a pronouncement made by Rushdie. As a news item reported it, with reference to his February 19[, 1989] apology,

The absurdity of the situation was caught by a cartoon in Le Monde which showed Rushdie at his typewriter, surrounded by fifteen harried bobbies all keeping an eye on him; one of the policemen barks into the walkie-talkie, “Close the airports!! He wants to write volume two!!!”

(2) When a citizen holds his government hostage, the latter is inevitably tempted to shut down his freedom of expression. Indeed, Wilders has complained of “pure political intimidation” by the cabinet and “unacceptable” pressure being placed on him to desist, including sending the public prosecutor after him. Thus does the Islamist challenge test the principles of Western governments as never before. Put differently, will Westerners resist dhimmitude or succumb to it? The outcome is by no means assured.

Freedom of speech is under assault today in Britain. A British blogger whom I read, Lionheart, has posted on his website that he expects to be arrested upon his return to the United Kingdom for things that he has posted on his blog. Likely as a result of his commentary on Islam, he will be charged with stirring up racial hatred.

Lionheart is a modern pamphleteer. He uses his blog to shine a light on the evils of radical Islam, primarily within the borders of the UK. He sees the growth of radical Islam in his country as insidious and a threat to the very existence of British culture, if not Britain itself. (Update: See the article below on the development of Muslim no-go areas in the UK where the indigenous population dare not tread)

Do visit his blog. Lionheart’s descriptions of what he sees in his own local community are dire. But in his language and bent, Lionheart is no different than thousands of bloggers in the U.S. who similarly note, deconstruct, and critically discuss radical Islam. He does not promote violence against Muslims.

I contacted Lionheart to get additional information about his claim that he faced imminent arrest, and he put me in contact with the attorney whom he has retained, Anthony Bennett. I spoke with Mr. Bennett, who confirmed the following facts:

1. The Bedfordshire police have contacted Lionheart to arrange for him to submit to arrest.

Bishop Nazir-Ali warns that attempts are being made to give Britain an increasingly Islamic character

Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, he compares the threat to the use of intimidation by the far-Right, and says that it is becoming increasingly difficult for Christianity to be the nation’s public religion in a multifaith, multicultural society.

His comments come as a poll of the General Synod – the Church’s parliament – shows that its senior leaders, including bishops, also believe that Britain is being damaged by large-scale immigration.

Bishop Nazir-Ali, who was born in Pakistan, gives warning that attempts are being made to give Britain an increasingly Islamic character by introducing the call to prayer and wider use of sharia law, a legal system based on the Koran.

In an attack on the Government’s response to immigration and the influx of “people of other faiths to these shores”, he blames its “novel philosophy of multiculturalism” for allowing society to become deeply divided, and accuses ministers of lacking a “moral and spiritual vision”.

David Davis, the shadow home secretary, has accused Muslims of promoting a kind of “voluntary apartheid” by shutting themselves in closed societies and demanding immunity from criticism.

In the Synod survey, to be published this week, bishops, senior clergy and influential churchgoers said that an increasingly multi-faith society threatens the country’s Christian heritage and blamed the divisions on the Government’s failure to integrate immigrants into their communities.

* Wrong thinking. It is not “the governments failure to integrate immigrants”, but the failure to recognize a threat and to effectively reverse Muhammedan infiltration and the establishment of a subversive, destructive belief-system.

Saudi Minister Calls Alleged Terror Link ‘An Outrage’

(CBS/AP) President Bush refused on Tuesday to release a congressional report alleging possible links between Saudi Arabian officials and the Sept. 11 hijackers. The White House sought to question a Saudi citizen who befriended two of the hijackers.

Bush said he could not comply with a request by the Saudi foreign minister for a chance to clear the Arab kingdom’s name because publication of the report could hurt U.S. intelligence operations.

The foreign minister, Saud al-Faisal, said he was disappointed but understood.

The information is widely believed to center on Saudi Arabia, birthplace of Osama bin Laden and 15 of the 19 hijackers. Saudi Arabia has vehemently denied supporting the hijackers.

Sources tell CBS the redacted section lays out a money trail between Saudi Arabia and supporters of al Qaeda, reports CBS White House Chief Correspondent John Roberts.

Among others, it singles out Omar al-Bayoumi, who gave financial assistance to 9-11 hijackers Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Midhar.

Washington’s most senior diplomatic couple — Bandar has been ambassador for 20 years — have been ladling out “material support,” indirectly or directly or both, to suspected terrorists or their families for years.

Haifa’s late father was King Faisal of Saudi Arabia; Faisal’s brother Prince Sultan, now Defence Minister, is Bandar’s father. The couple have contributed uncounted millions to the 300 Saudi charities that are “suspected of doling out about $4-billion every year to Islamic extremists,” according to the Detroit News.

Bandar’s father runs one of the largest such charities, which typically fund Wahhabist mosques and madrassas (2,000 in the United States), where children and youths are taught the strain of Islam that has fuelled al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

In the past 10 years, according to the United Nations Security Council, Saudi Arabians have contributed half a billion U.S. dollars directly to al-Qaeda.
