Intelligence chief says “several hundred” extremists living in Germany

BERLIN: The head of Germany’s intelligence agency said that “several hundred” Muslim extremists are living in Germany and that al-Qaida is forming a strong base in North Africa, a German magazine reported Monday.

Ernst Uhrlau, who oversees the BND, the Germany intelligence agency, said that “up to 700 people are being surveilled, in different degrees,” according to an interview with Der Spiegel.

He was also quoted by the magazine as saying that “more than a dozen” of those people had made trips to Pakistan and Afghanistan to try to make contact with Islamic extremist groups operating there.

“Converts that end up in extremist groups often tend toward political renegades and absolute intolerance and highest radicalism,” Uhrlau was quoted as saying by the magazine for its special edition on Islam in Europe.

However, he also emphasized that most converts were “friendly people, who discovered Islam in searching for meaning for their lives.”

In the interview with the magazine, Uhrlau underlined that northern Africa was becoming a greater security risk.

The magazine quoted him as saying that German intelligence and security agencies had followed “with great concern” the activities of a “handful of groups” that have settled in the region.

“What’s growing there is bringing a brand new quality of jihad right to our front door,” he was quoted as saying by the magazine.

Thousands of Turks chanted anti-American and anti-Israel slogans, sang jihadist songs and pledged to follow the path of Hamas’s Sheikh Ahmed Yassin at a rally held on Saturday to coincide with US Vice President Dick Cheney’s visit to Turkey, according to the Washington-based Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

In a news release on Monday, MEMRI quoted the Turkish Islamist Web sites Velfecr.com and Kudusyolu.com as reporting that demonstrators carried hundreds of Hamas and Hizbullah flags and posters, as well as pictures of the movements’ leaders.

Some of the banners read, “Israel Will Be Destroyed,” “We Will Settle Accounts with the Murderer Israel,” “If Every Muslim Pours Out a Bucket of Water, Israel Drowns,” and “The Way of the Shahids is Our Way.”

Philippines: Hunt for terror suspect continues

US-backed Philippine troops are hunting for a top Indonesian terror suspect believed to have helped plot the 2002 Bali bombings despite suspicion that he was recently killed.

Troops have checked at least two reported sightings but failed to find Dulmatin on southern Jolo island after the military reported last month that marines dug up his suspected body in nearby Tawi-Tawi province, police said.

UK: Al-Qaeda jail gang spark riot

Prison Jihad

An al-Qaeda jail gang sparked a brutal riot at Britain’s toughest prison after claiming an inmate insulted one of them.
The Muslim Boys mob armed themselves with socks packed with tinned food as they ambushed rival prisoners in a fearsome revenge attack.
All warders on duty were scrambled into action but it took 10 minutes to quell the violence.
An insider at Belmarsh prison, South East London, revealed: “They attacked a group of non-Muslim prisoners at meal time.
“It was brutal and all hell broke lose. One of them was verbally abused and the fight is thought to have been retaliation.

“They have no qualms about using violence to exert their authority.”

Belmarsh staff have grown furious at what they see as bosses’ soft approach to the gang.
Last year, they battered four officers with pool cues in a riot. And three officers were attacked during a separate incident.

It has been a while since we last visited the “Ask the Scholar” feature at Islam Online. This one concerns “Fight Ethics Between Islam and Zionism.” When is it permissible to kill civilians?

Originally, it is prohibited to kill civilians, women, and children, but certain cases are exempted from this:

1. When all individuals on the enemy side participate in war, as then the term “civilian” would not apply to them.

2. When civilians do things to help militants, as then what they do would be regarded as a “military action.”

3. When warriors use civilians, women, and children as a shield and there is no way for Muslim warriors to reach those militants except by killing those civilians.

4. When the enemies kill Muslim civilians, for then their civilians may be treated the same.

5. When a civilian “accepts” usurping a (Muslim) land, he is considered an occupier, and is not a civilian any more.

6. When children themselves are not intended (or targeted) to be killed (deliberately) without doing anything wrong or committing any crime.

It is well known that Israelis, men and women, indulge in war against Palestinians, so they are warriors. They are also usurpers of the (Palestinian) land, because the Jews in Palestine have emigrated from various countries, and they have no right in this land. In Islam, it is obligatory to liberate any Islamic land from occupation. It should also be known that jihad against the Jews is not because they are Jews, but because they are usurpers and warriors.

Libya charity denies Austria hostages mediation

TRIPOLI (Reuters) – An organisation led by a son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi denied on Sunday that it was negotiating the release of two Austrians believed held by al Qaeda in north Africa.

The Gaddafi Foundation charity was responding to a report by Carinthia governor Joerg Haider on Saturday that its chairman Saif al-Islam was in touch with the kidnappers in Mali to try to obtain the release of the hostages.

“Gaddafi Foundation affirms that it has not undertaken any measures or efforts or contacts, whether direct or indirect, with the kidnappers despite the Foundation, and its chairman, having received several demands to do so.”

However on Sunday the Austrian news agency APA quoted Haider as saying in response to the foundation’s denial: “It is not an initiative of the foundation but his (Saif al-Islam’s) own … it is a secret action.”

The reported role of Gaddafi’s son, who has studied in Austria and is a friend of right-wing populist Haider, raised some hopes for the release of the two Austrian tourists who were seized in Tunisia last month and are reported to be held in northern Mali.

The Algerian-based al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb said it seized the two on February 22 and has demanded a ransom and the liberation of 10 militants held in Algeria and Tunisia. It has set a deadline of midnight on Sunday for its demands to be met.

Haider’s spokesman said on Saturday that “negotiations in Mali have reached a decisive phase and … in the next few hours there could be a decision in this matter … a release.”

Saif al-Islam was involved in negotiations last year to free six foreign medics sentenced to death for infecting Libyan children with HIV.

Austria has launched an intense diplomatic campaign to try to obtain the release of Andrea Kloiber, 43, and Wolfgang Ebner, 51, sending a diplomatic envoy to the Malian capital Bamako and seeking the help of regional states like Libya.

The Austrian envoy in Bamako, Anton Prohaska, said on Saturday he remained hopeful the two would be freed unharmed.

Mali’s government has been trying to help Austria obtain the release of the two tourists. Local military sources believe they are being held at a Saharan Islamist hideout in Mali’s remote northeast region of Kidal that borders with Algeria and Niger.

Al Qaeda has warned that any attempt to launch a military operation to free the captives could result in their death.

INDONESIAN police say a body recovered in the Philippines is not that of a key Islamic militant wanted over the 2002 Bali bombings.

Philippine authorities had said the body was believed to be Dulmatin, who was thought to have been wounded in a clash with government troops in the region in January.

“The team has returned from the Philippines and we affirm that the exhumed body was not that of Dulmatin,” the newspaper’s website quoted Indonesian national police spokesman Anton Bachrul Alam as saying.

The US Government has offered $US10 million ($11m) for Dulmatin, who was once a senior figure in the radical Jemaah Islamiah (JI) movement and is believed to have been hiding in the southern Philippines for the past five years.

Mr Alam said police would wait for DNA test results to be released by their Philippine counterparts for final confirmation that the body, found in a shallow grave on Tawi-Tawi island in February, did not belong to the militant.

Dulmatin is accused of helping JI plan and carry out the 2002 Bali bombings, which killed 202 people on the Indonesian holiday island, most of them foreign tourists.

Sidney Jones, an expert on JI, said last month that JI contacts in Indonesia would have likely known if Dulmatin was dead.

COPENHAGEN – Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen rejected praise from controversial Dutch politician Geert Wilders and condemned Wilders’ “sickening” and “coarse” remarks about Muslims.

In an interview published Wednesday in the Danish daily Jyllands Posten, Rasmussen was responding to remarks by Wilders during a visit to Copenhagen earlier in the week praising the Danish leader for his “courageous defence” of freedom of expression.
Rasmussen said he strongly distanced himself “from Wilders’ debasing remarks about Muslims,” and called Wilders’ views “incredibly sickening.”

Wilders, the Dutch politician controversial for his anti-Islam views and plans to release a film about the Koran, had called Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende a “coward” for his critical stance against the film project. Wilders wants to ban the Koran, comparing it with Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf.”

“Wilders’ comments about Muslims are so coarse, that I would not want to see any group in Danish society attacked in such a way,” the Copenhagen leader told Jyllands Posten.

To Fitna or not to Fitna?

By now the idea is spreading all over the place that there is no movie Fitna, and never will be — that Geert Wilders simply announced that there would be to expose Islamic intolerance.

I have no direct knowledge either way, but I’m inclined to credit this idea at this point, since the film has not appeared now on several dates on which it had been announced to appear. Maybe it will finally burst upon the world, but I won’t be surprised if it never does.

And look what we have seen: for the mere announcement that he was making a film quoting the Qur’an and showing Muslims acting violently in accord with its words, we have seen threats from several Muslim countries, threats from Al-Qaeda, demonstrations in the Netherlands and around the world, and quailing dhimmitude from the august leaders of Europe, as they cringed before the anticipated Islamic wrath, and from Network Solutions, as they pulled Wilders’s site while it was almost entirely devoid of content.

Note, meanwhile, that hardly a day goes by on which some Muslims somewhere do not commit an act of violence that they deem to be justified by the words of the Qur’an. Jihadist leaders routinely invoke Qur’anic passages to explain their actions and make recruits among peaceful Muslims. In other words, we see the announced theme of Wilders’s Fitna played out every day, not by non-Muslims but by Muslims — and there is nary a peep of protest from anyone. Muslims in the West issue vague denunciations of “terrorism,” but never specifically explain whom they actually believe to be a terrorist, and there are no protests, no threats, no nothing against those who have supposedly “hijacked” their religion.

Maybe that was Wilders’s point all along, and it is a point well made, made again and again and again.

Jemaah Islamiyah 

Barnabas Fund has received credible reports that the Al-Qaeda linked terrorist organisation Jemaah Islamiyah has threatened to target Christians in Indonesia this Easter. Jemaah Islamiyah has been responsible for many attacks in the past – it is believed to have organised the Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005, and bomb attacks at churches on Christmas Eve in 2000.

Jemaah Islamiyah is dedicated to creating a single Islamic state throughout South-East Asia under shari`a law. It considers non-Muslims as legitimate targets and is active throughout the region. The organisation is closely linked to Al-Qaeda, and has shown that is it able to carry out devastating attacks, such as the Bali bombings in 2002 which killed 202 people. On Christmas Eve, 2000, Jemaah Islamiyah bombed several churches in Jakarta, Bandung and Riau, killing 18 people and injuring more than a hundred.

Threats to Christians on major celebrations such as Easter and Christmas are frequent in Indonesia, and security guards are often posted outside churches at this time. Some churches in Jakarta keep metal detectors near their entrances to try to thwart bomb attacks. This Easter will therefore be a time of great anxiety for Indonesia`s Christians.

A Dutch activist group has called for a mass online apology campaign to “smother out” the soon-to-be-released anti-Islamic movie by a right wing politician.

Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders says he plans to broadcast his film “Fitna” — Challenge in Arabic – on the web sometime in the next two weeks. The 15-minute movie denounces the Quran as a “fascist” book.

On Monday, Amsterdam-based cultural organization Mediamatic called on Dutch citizens “to make their own version of Fitna in which they apologize for Wilders’ embarrassing behavior”.

“If everybody joins in it will be hard to find the video by Wilders without finding lots of movies apologizing for it,” said a statement released by the organization.

“Just to let the world (and ourselves) know that allowing opportunists to speak does not mean that we agree with what they say,” the statement added.

Willem Velthoven of Mediamatic urges people to “act as a look-a-like of the politician” by putting on a blonde wig, and then film themselves apologizing using a mobile phone or video camera.

He urged people to publish their apologies as many times as possible on sites such as Youtube, Hyves, Facebook and Myspace, calling it “Fitna by Geert Wilders”.

“Because of the freedom of speech, Mediamatic doesn’t want to stop the Fitna video,” the statement said. “What Mediamatic can do is to stimulate disinformation…[in] hopes that Wilders will be smothered in apologies”.

The Madrassah Attack That No One Ever Heard About:

Here is another typical BS story from MPACUK, also reported on the Bunglawussy ‘Islamophobia Watch’ site. If it really happened there would be riots all over England now, but as it is they don’t even remember the date correctly. (just scroll down on the MPACUK site: First it was “On Thursday 13th of March between 5pm and 8 pm in Dudley Hill in Bradford, West Yorkshire, a Madrassah was attacked”- then the original poster ‘Victor Hugo’ claims “Sorry I made a little error. I have just been told that the incident didn’t take place on the 13th of March, but on the 6th March a week before the date I have mentioned.

Sorry about that, I was just told it happened last thursday but it was the thursday before. Because of no media coverage I couldn’t be sure..”

Bradford madrassa atacked

On Thursday 13th of March between 5pm and 8 pm in Dudley Hill in Bradford, West Yorkshire, a Madrassah was attacked.

20 white youths wearing hoodies rushed the madrassah armed with hammers, axes and baseball bats. They attacked everyone in the madrassah. There were young kids in there aged between 9 and 19 who were also attacked and beaten by these thugs. And the teachers were also given a kicking. Most of the students from the madrassah have been hospitalised. It was just sheer luck that no one was killed.
