STEVE Fielding recently attended a climate change conference in Washington, DC. Listening to the papers presented, the Family First senator became puzzled that the scientific analyses they provided directly contradicted the reasons the Australian government had been giving as the justification for its emissions trading legislation.

Fielding heard leading atmospheric physicist Dick Lindzen, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, describe evidence that the warming effect of carbon dioxide was much overestimated by computer climate models and remark: “What we see, then, is that the very foundation of the issue of global warming is wrong.

“In a normal field, these results would pretty much wrap things up, but global warming-climate change has developed so much momentum that it has a life of its own quite removed from science.” More>>

 

 

Climate of hatred: Prominent scientist refused service due to skepticism

Prominent MIT physicist and global warming skeptic, Richard Lindzen, was recently refused the services of a Boston-area art appraiser because of global warming.

As Lindzen described in an e-mail:

In our recent house fire, an 18th century oriental rug was burnt, and we needed an appraisal of its value for our insurance. We were referred to a dealer, [name withheld], who agreed to do the appraisal. However, when my wife, Nadine, brought him the burnt rug, he rudely turned her away saying that he had sent me an email explaining his position…

Here’s the text of the art appraiser’s e-mail to Lindzen:

I am sorry to inform you that after some consideration, I’ve decided not to perform the appraisal service that you’ve requested. Your writing on the subject of global warming is offensive to me personally, and I feel that I would have difficulty being an impartial appraiser of value given my view on the subject. Just goes to show that Mark Steyn was right. When the Islamic population of a country reaches above a certain percentage the effects of Shariah proponents start to take effect….and all non-Muslims experience a rollback of their religious and social liberties – this is a first step in that direction.   Not even the United States is immune from the tyranny of Islamic law, if cultural relativism is allowed into our courtroom. One law should apply to everyone.

A federal judge has upheld a decision by festival organizers in Dearborn, Mich., which is about 30 percent Muslim, to ban a Christian ministry from handing out religious information on public sidewalks. 

The ruling came from U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmonds and affects this weekend’s celebration but will not affect the free speech lawsuit over the event, filed by the Thomas More Law Center and the Becker Law Firm.

The case is being brought on behalf of the Arabic Christian Perspective, a Christian group that ministers to Muslims. According to the Thomas More Law Center, Pastor George Saieg and scores of his volunteers have visited Dearborn for the city’s Arab International Festival to hand out religious information several times.

At estimated 30,000 of Dearborn’s nearly 100,000 residents are Muslim.

While there never has been a disruption of the public peace during the five years the ministry has been attending, this year Dearborn police warned Saieg he and his group would not be allowed to walk the public sidewalks to hand out information and instead would be confined to a specific spot, the lawsuit said.

After negotiations in Dearborn failed to restore the Christians’ rights, the lawsuit was filed.

“It’s ironic that while Americans are applauding the free speech exercised by hundreds of thousands of Muslims on the streets of Iran, the city of Dearborn is restricting free speech rights Christians are attempting to exercise on the city’s public sidewalks,” said Richard Thompson, president of the Thomas More Law Center…

Americans are proud, and rightly so, of the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights, which, among other things, protects speech from government control. The Amendment says in part: “Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.”

Increasingly, however, Americans seem content to regard the First Amendment not as the fundamental working tool of democracy, but as a national heirloom, a kind of antique to admire rather than put to use. I don’t think many of my countrymen perceive how profoundly their attitude toward free speech has changed. But there is a difference between having freedom of speech and exercising freedom of speech, one that has become glaringly and distressingly obvious to me since September 11, 2001. So, while it is true that the US government is not Constitutionally empowered to make laws that censor Americans, it is also true, I believe, that Americans have come to censor themselves. But why?

I recently met my friend, Helen Freedman, at the U Café. This café on the upper east side is my local watering hole, an oasis, a village well, where I meet people for coffee. Sometimes, when it’s quiet, I just sit there and read, as if I lived in Paris, Rome, Warsaw, Vienna, Tel Aviv, or on the lower east side of NYC–but long ago, when a writer had a favorite cafe where he (or she) read their newspapers, pen articles and books, meet other writers to argue, plan revolutions, initiate love affairs, and to dream.

Freedman had just returned from one of her frequent trips to Israel. This time, what amazed her most were “all the illegal Arab settlements” which had grown exponentially “all over Jerusalem.”

(ANSAmed) – TUNIS, 19 JUNE – “Tunisia is astonished by claims of the violation of human rights that some Tunisian prisoners supposedly could undergo if they are repatriated to their country of origin,” the Tunisian Ministry for Justice and Human Rights said in a statement reacting to the prospects for Tunisian prisoners at Guantanamo who could be sent home. “Such claims, made to justify the transfer of these citizens resident abroad to certain European countries rather than repatriating them, are totally baseless. The Constitution of Tunisia guarantees the physical and moral integrity of any person on its territory and the country has always collaborated with the United Nations and international institutions on such matters,” the statement claimed. “The fact of being detained at the Guantanamo camp is not proof of guilt. The detainees convicted in their absence by Tunisian courts can, when that happens, make use of their right to appeal against such judgements”. The ministry cited the case of two former Guantanamo detainees who were repatriated in 2007 who appealed. “They benefitted from a fair and public trial and their sentences were reduced. They are held in normal conditions and receive regular visits from family members and their lawyers.” “In this context, the repatriation to Canada of Said Jaziri, an Imam of Tunisian origin, should be remembered. Things are not going to get any prettier in the next European electoral cycle. Aside from professions of “horror” at the success of the neo-nationalists, there is now talk of shutting down these parties by using the legal system (as was done in Belgium) or by denying them the public funding to which their share of the vote entitles them. Subverting democracy to suppress neo-nationalism doesn’t seem a smart move. But then if the political class were that smart it wouldn’t be in this situation. The problem in Europe is not a lunatic fringe but a lunatic mainstream ever more estranged from its voters.

The European political class is congratulating itself at holding the tide of neo-nationalism to the low double-digits. I’d say some of these results are pretty remarkable given that these parties are all but excluded from the public discourse and that even a relatively mild dissenter from the consensus such as the Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders has been banned from setting foot in Britain and is undergoing prosecution for his views in the Netherlands. What makes the Labour Party “mainstream” with 15 per cent of the vote and UKIP the “fringe” with 17 per cent? Nothing, other than the blinkers of the politico-media class. But if you want to drive the electorate toward the wilder shores in ever greater numbers, keep crying “Racist!” at every opportunity.

France’s Muslim council has hit out a lawmakers’ call for an inquiry into the spread of burqas, Islamic veils that cover women from head to toes, warning not to “stigmatise” the country’s five million Muslims.  AFP -

A group of 58 French MPs are asking for a parliamentary panel to look at ways to curb the wearing of the burka or niqab, which they describe as a “prison” and “degrading” for women and contrary to French secular principles.

The lawmaker spearheading the drive, Communist Andre Gerin, is mayor of the southern city of Venissieux, home to a large north African immigrant community, where he says the sight of fully-covered women has become commonplace.

“Our politicians need to stop acting so blind,” Gerin told AFP, describing the burka as evidence of a new “green fascism” led by Islamic fundamentalists.

Housing minister Fadela Amara, a Muslim-born women’s rights campaigner, waded into the fray saying “we must do everything to stop burkas from spreading, in the name of democracy, of the republic, of respect for women.

“The worrying thing is that we are seeing more and more of them,” she said, describing the burka as “a kind of tomb for women.”

But Mohammed Moussaoui, the head of the official French Council for the Muslim Religion (CFCM), insisted full-body veils remain a rare exception among France’s Muslim community, Europe’s largest.

“To raise the subject like this, via a parliamentary committee, is a way of stigmatising Islam and the Muslims of France,” he charged.
