Libyan leader tells Italians expelled from country 40 years ago they are free to return

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi ended a first visit to former colonial power Italy on Saturday by inviting Italians expelled in the wake of his 1969 revolution to return to the North African country.
Gaddafi received a delegation of Italians expelled from Libya when he swept to power four decades ago and promised the doors of his country were open to them.
“Gaddafi has acknowledged our problem. He has invited us all to return to Libya,” David Jerbi, one of thousands of Libyan Jews forced to flee the country.
Jerbi said Gaddafi did not explicitly speak about the case of Libya’s Jewish community which traces its origins to Roman times and has dwindled almost to nothing.
“It’s a very good start on his behalf: he has approached us and is opening possibilities,” Jerbi said outside the park where the Libyan leader pitched his tent during his stay.

Gaddafi angered Rome’s Jewish community by calling the meeting on a Saturday, the sacred Sabbath day. Many Jewish leaders refused to attend.

The Libyan leader, who says the wounds of the past have healed, angered many Italians by wearing a photograph of an executed resistance leader on his arrival in Rome, and by criticizing the condition of women and democracy in Europe.

Some Italians deported from Libya sounded skeptical about Gaddafi’s offer, which did not appear to deal with reparations.
“He told us that he was forced (to expel us) and that by doing so he saved our lives because the Libyan people wanted to kill us,” said Umberto Robbi, who was expelled in 1970.

“So to save us he also confiscated all our property.”

Reporting from Tehran — Huge swaths of the capital erupted in fiery riots that stretched into the early morning Sunday as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared victory in his quest for a second four-year term amid allegations of widespread fraud and a strident challenge of the vote results by his main challenger, who was reportedly placed under house arrest.

As Ahmadinejad promised a “bright and glorious future” for Iran in a televised address, supporters of his reformist rival Mir-Hossein Mousavi clashed with police and militiamen in riot gear and throughout Tehran in the most serious clashes in the capital since a student uprising 10 years ago.

Searing smoke and the smell of burning trash bins and tear gas filled the night sky. Protesters poured into key squares around the capital, burning tires, erecting banners and hurling stones at riot police on motorcycles, who responded with truncheons.

Both Guantanamo prisoners who were to be resettled in Germany by request of the USA are known to the security services due to their criminal records. As the news magazine “Focus” reports, the Tunisian  arrived  1996  illegally in Germany and had applied under wrong name for asylum. In the federal state Hessen he was known to the police as a drug dealer.

According to the information of the authorities the Tunisian went through a paramilitary education. After the attacks on 9/11  he fled from Afghanistan to Iran, however, was sent back again and handed over in February, 2003 to the US military. The second Guantanamo prisoner was in a Taliban camp and appears according to the news magazine as a potential martyr in a video which was taken up in autumn, 2001. The Ministry of Internal Affairs sees no possibility for the admission of the prisoners because of of the legal conditions.

Former US President  peanut farmer Jimmy Carter was honored by the Palestinian Authority government Saturday and pledged to support the Palestinians’ campaign for independence to the end of his days.

In his acceptance speech, Carter urged the Palestinians to end their internal divisions and stop persecuting their rivals.

Carter met with Hamas’ exiled leadership in Syria on Thursday and is to head to Gaza on Sunday, after meeting with Israeli officials. Carter has said peace between Israel and the Palestinians is impossible without involving Hamas, but reiterated in Syria that he was not representing the Obama administration.

In the West Bank, Carter was awarded the Palestine International Award for Excellence and Creativity. Previous recipients included two former international envoys, James Wolfensohn and Peter Hansen.

Carter brokered the Israeli-Egypt peace accord of 1979 and several years ago wrote a book, “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid,” that is sharply critical of Israeli policies in the occupied territories.

“I have been in love with the Palestinian people for many years,” he said Saturday, adding that this is a feeling shared by members of his family.

Colonel Gaddafi has arrived in Rome at the start of an historic visit to Libya’s former colonial masters with an archive photograph provocatively pinned to his chest showing the arrest of an anti-Italy guerrilla fighter dubbed “The Lion of the Desert”.

The photograph shows the arrest in 1931 by colonial Italian troops of the Libyan guerrilla leader Omar al Mukhtar. Al Mukhtar’s frail elderly son, who descended the aircraft steps with difficulty just behind Gaddafi in traditional white Arab robes, is part of the 300-strong delegation accompanying the Libyan leader. A Libyan financed 1980s feature film on the anti colonial struggle, The Lion of the Desert, was recently broadcast on Italian television for the first time.

Officials from both Libya and Italy insist that despite the anti-colonial gesture, the colonel’s three day trip – his first since gaining power in a coup 40 years ago – is a “visit of reconciliation”. Wearing full colonel’s uniform with gold epaulettes, numerous medals, sunglasses and straggly long black hair beneath a military cap, the Libyan leader said “a page of the past has been turned, thanks to the courage of Italy”, as he embraced Silvio Berlusconi, the Prime Minister.

Paki Government Trying to Reinterpret Islam

The fight against the Taliban on ideological battlegrounds poses a grave challenge, writes Dawn.com’s Huma Yusuf.

Why fight when the infidels are paying huge amounts of jiziya with willing submission?  Some Muslims, those who do well under the current arrangement, don’t like the advances of the Taliban: in“the struggle over the soul of Islam”  the people of Pakistan – will have to jointly engage in ijtehad to devise a way to quash Taliban ideology, say’s Huma Yusuf, a “moderate” cleric.

* Unfortunately for Huma, the gates of Itjihad are closed.

* Reform of Islam, a concept of which many Westerners are terribly fond,  is out:  “No-one can change Islam. No-one can call himself a reformer of Islam. Islam cannot be reformed. Islam is perfect, from beginning to end.   Modernizing Islam, that cannot be done.” Source>>

Scan newspapers and blogs in recent months and you’ll see that the fight against the Taliban in north-west Pakistan has been framed as a ‘war against terror’ or an ‘information war’ over the ‘hearts and minds’ of residents of the Frontier province. Op-eds have argued that the Pakistan Army is fighting the Taliban to restore territorial integrity, safeguard human rights, ensure good governance and establish the writ of the Pakistani state. Books and articles point out that Taliban foot soldiers are young men, lured to militancy by hefty cash dole-outs in the absence of other job opportunities. Indeed, one aspect of the fight against the Taliban has almost been forgotten in recent months – its ideological underpinnings.

The suicide bombing at the Jamia Naeemia mosque in Lahore on Friday, in which the head cleric Dr Sarfraz Naeemi lost his life, is an urgent reminder that the fight against the Taliban is nothing less than a battle for the future of Islam and how the religion is to be practiced and interpreted in Pakistan.

Events in recent months – such as the fiasco of the passage of the Nizam-e-Adl Regulation and increased focus on the Taliban’s funding sources – have made many Pakistanis cynical about their motives. But Friday’s blast confirms that Pakistan’s militants are primarily on a broad ideological mission to impose, consolidate and spread their preferred interpretation of Islam.

Pakistan: Radical Muslims running a tea stall beat a Christian man to death for using a cup designated for Muslims

*  Radical Muslims?  Are there any other ones?  Or were they all misunderstanders of the Religion of Peace?  But we can’t blame these acts  on the 1.5 gazillion of peaceful, law-abiding Muslims now, can we? And surely this has nothing to do with Islam, – or does it?
