LONDON, Jan. 20 (UPI) — The British government is wasting $1.4 million on a think tank run by former Islamic extremists to counter the radicalization of Muslims, critics say.The public money is being given to the Quilliam Foundation think tank despite doubts expressed by members of the government as well as by Conservative Party opponents, The Times of London reported Tuesday.

The foundation was set up nine months ago by bestselling author Ed Husain and Maajid Nawaz, a former political prisoner in Egypt, as part of the government’s strategy to combat the spread of extremist ideology among British Muslims, The Times said.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned the decision to disqualify Balad and UAL from running for Knesset, accepting two appeals submitted on behalf of the Arab parties.

The decision had been made by the Central Elections Committee on the grounds that two parties “support an armed struggle against Israel and that their political platform aims to undermine Israel’s existence as a Jewish and democratic state.”

Directive to prevent repeats of Milan Duomo incident
(ANSA) – Rome, January 21 – Italy is moving to prevent any more recurrences of mass Muslim prayers in front of Catholic places of worship following incidents in Milan, Bologna and Rome this month. 

All three incidents took place during protest marches against the Israeli offensive in Gaza, but a mass pray-in in front of the Duomo in Milan grabbed the most headlines. Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said Wednesday he was working on a directive that would improve ”control” during demonstrations, without revealing full details of the measure.

”I have prepared a guideline that will be sent to all city prefects so that what happened in front of the Duomo in Milan will not be repeated,” Maroni told parliament.
