ISTANBUL, January 22 (Compass Direct News) – Syriac Christians in southeastern Turkey say a land dispute over the historic Mor Gabriel Monastery is part of a larger system of discrimination against the religious minority in this overwhelmingly Islamic country. Muslim residents of southeastern Turkey dispute the boundary lines of an ancient Christian monastery dating to the fourth century as being unnecessarily large for the needs of a religious community. Islamic leaders from Yayvantepe, Eglence and Candarli are attempting to confiscate one-third of the monastery’s property, claiming it was wrongfully appropriated and that they need it for their livestock. The mayors of the three towns also charged the monastery with attempting to proselytize young children (illegal in Turkey) and carrying out “anti-Turkish” activity. Metropolitan Timotheos Samuel Aktas, leader of the monastery, said in a report that these claims were groundless and of the same provocative nature that has historically sparked violence against Turkey’s Christians. “All the allegations are frivolous and vexatious, devoid of any logic or evidence, solely aimed with the malicious intent of rousing anti-Christian sentiments by the surrounding Muslim villages,” he said.Â

CAIRO — A controversial Egyptian Copt living abroad has incensed Egyptians over a letter he wrote about the recent Israeli war on Gaza. Morris Sadek, the head of the National Coptic Assembly in the United States, wrote an open letter on Jan. 19, titled “Israel’s Victory,” which has left Egyptians – both Copts and Muslims – angry over his claims.
In the letter, he called Hamas a part of the Muslim Brotherhood and argued that Palestinians should not complain of their situation vis-a-vis Israel.
“Soon after Palestinians elected Hamas under the symbol ‘Islam is the solution’ Hamas turned against the Palestinian Authority and declared an Islamic state in Gaza, where they applied the Sharia and killed Christians and burned their stores and kidnapped foreign correspondents,” the duel U.S.-Egyptian citizen Sadek wrote, linking Egypt’s powerful opposition Muslim Brotherhood to Hamas.

I wish that when Prince AlWaleed lost his $7.9 billion, American taxpayers didn’t bail him out by rescuing Citigroup. If the government hadn’t bailed out Citi, AlWaleed would really have gone to the cleaners. After all, he’s still worth many billions of dollars. And what’s the loss of a few billions to a multi-billionaire. He’s still worth between $10 and $20 billion.
Still, at least he got soaked a little. He is, after all, a major donor to homicide bomber telethons and a big hater of Jews, Israel, and America (he hates us, but he buys us).

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: President Obama is facing growing criticism from Republicans over hisorder to close the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, with his decision to fulfill a well-known campaign pledge bringing an early test of his promised bipartisan cooperation.
A group of House Republicans quickly filed a bill that would prohibit federal courts from ordering the transfer or release of Guantanamo detainees into the U.S.
“Closing Guantanamo Bay presents a clear and present danger to all Americans,” said Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee.

The latest twist in the clash between Western values and the Muslim world took place yesterday in the Netherlands, where a court ordered the prosecution of lawmaker and provocateur Geert Wilders for inciting violence. The Dutch MP and leader of the Freedom Party, which opposes Muslim immigration into Holland, will stand trial soon for his harsh criticism of Islam.
Mr. Wilders made world news last year with the short film “Fitna.” In the 15-minute video, he juxtaposes Koranic verses calling for jihad with clips of Islamic hate preachers and terror attacks. He has compared the Koran to Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” and urged Muslims to tear out “hate-filled” verses from their scripture. This is a frontal assault on Islam — but, as Mr. Wilders points out, he’s targeting the religion, not its followers. “Fitna,” in fact, sparked a refreshing debate between moderate Muslims and non-Muslims in the Netherlands, and beyond.

Wow! I’ve never heard that before! That makes it all make sense! Of course! He meant metaphorical wife-beating! You know, the kind of thing people mean when they say things like, “Wow, he really gave him a tongue-lashing,” or “So-and-so should be publicly flogged,” or “That’s gonna leave a mark” or “Forty lashes with a wet noodle.” Of course! How could the world have been so stupid! If only we would learn to quote these clerics, and the Qur’an, in context, everything would be all right, the global jihad and Islamic supremacism would vanish, and a new era of peace would dawn!

Vienna – Austrian far-right parliamentarian Susanne Winter was convicted Thursday of incitement because of her anti-Muslim statements, including the claim that Islam’s prophet Mohammed was a paedophile. A court in Winter’s home town of Graz also found the 51-year-old politician guilty of humiliating a religion. She was sentenced to a fine of 24,000 euros (31,000 dollars) euros and a suspended prison term of three months, Austrian news agency APAÂ reported.
