Italy: Burkini scares children in Verona pool

(ANSA) – Verona, August 18 – Italy on Tuesday got its
first close-up look at a burkini – an outfit consisting of
head scarf, tunic and trousers – when a woman showed up at a
Verona swimming pool wearing the outfit.
In France, a woman was recently evicted from a pool
outside Paris for wearing the head-to-toe swimwear because
officials said the outfit was unhygienic.
Christian Panzarini, the manager of the Verona pool,
said he had not asked the woman to leave despite several
complaints from mothers who said she had frightened their
tots.
However, Panzarini asked the woman to send him an
e-mail detailing the kind of textile used for the outfit to
see if it was in line with hygienic regulations.

Lord Patel condemns Fitzpatrick’s ‘cowardly attack’ on Muslim constituents

A Labour peer has demanded an apology from Jim Fitzpatrick, the Farming minister, after Mr Fitzpatrick publicly criticised the segregation of men and women at Muslim weddings.

Lord Patel of Blackburn, a senior figure in Britain’s Muslim community, accused Mr Fitzpatrick of launching a “cowardly attack” on Muslims who opted for a segregated wedding, accusing him of pandering to “anti-Muslim sentiment” within his constituency. (Who in the f*#k made this turd a “Lord?”)

One of these days I’ll hopefully get married and a ceremony is likely to be held at a Sikh Gurdwara (more because my parents will want to have a ceremony there rather than on account of my own religiousness). In a Gurdwara the guys sit on one side and girls sit on the other side, and the bride-groom in the middle. If some MP came and didn’t like it, buggered off, and then sent a press release to all the media going on how about insulting he found it – I wouldn’t speak to that tosser ever….

When the Arabs come to  town, others stay away: the men treat the waiters and other hotel personnel like second class humans. Many regular guests and visitors from the Netherlands and Germany are being scared off.

In the midst of the raging economic crisis, with the tourist industry in Austria experiencing a dramatic drop, the number of Arab visitors to Austria vacation spots remains the same. Even though Middle Eastern tourists are propping up the Austrian economy, not all Austrians are happy with the ethnic shift in the tourist industry.

Our Austrian correspondent ESW has translated an article from the print edition of NEWS magazine, published on August 13, 2009:

The Arabs are coming…

…and are spending a lot of money. Tourists from the Middle East spend more money during their vacation than all the others.

…but many don’t want them. In Zell am See, many restaurant owners are ranting against the Arabs.

Luxury tourists. Large Arab families are on tour in Austria and leave millions in the country. Still, not all of them are popular everywhere.

Zell am See Arabs 1“Zell am See is prostituting itself,” rants Hermann Mosshammer in a regional magazine. “I want to be able to walk around town five years from now without a muezzin calling to prayer from a church tower.” He owns two cafés in Zell am See and has a problem with the tourists who hail from the Arabian peninsula. The lake, the mountains, the glacier: all wonders of nature in the Pinzgau [a district of Salzburg, an Austrian province] attract holiday makers from Dubai, Qatar, and other places.

Seventeen percent of all summer tourists in Zell am See are from the Arabian gulf. In July and August 2008, approximately 100,000 Arabs visited the city of 9,700 inhabitants, thereby saving the already limping summer tourism numbers. Austria’s capital, Vienna, also profits from this boom: there were a remarkable 137,000 overnight stays [an Austrian euphemism to count tourist stays] from Arab countries in 2008.

But not everyone is excited about the boom. Café owner Mr. Mosshammer is not alone in his opinion. NEWS visited Zell am See and many restaurant owners support what polls have shown: Eighty percent of those polled want to stop all promotional activities in Arab countries. More specifically, it is those in the restaurant and catering business who do not benefit from the Arab boom who do not see the exotic visitors as cash-cows saving their summer business, but who see them as part of a cultural problem.

“All the veiled women in their burqas are changing the appearance of our town. The men treat the waiters and other hotel personnel like second class humans. Many regular guests and visitors from the Netherlands and Germany are being scared off. We need a new and healthier mix of guests,” an agitated restaurant owner, requesting anonymity, tells NEWS.

Zell am See Arabs 2Such polemics are problematic and economically fatal, especially in a year of crisis such as 2009, in which tourism numbers in Austria are expected to dip by 3.5%. It is the Gulf Arab holidaymakers who can save the tourism industry from a total collapse. Sheikhs tend to vacation with a different budget compared to central Europeans. The national average shows that visitors from the Middle East spend at least 30 percent more than all other tourists; they stay at five-star hotels, often with their extended families, and shopping is their favorite activity while vacationing.

There is no crisis mode.

Diplomatic row after Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan questioned by US customs

A case of life imitating art has left American diplomats scrambling to soothe relations with Bollywood’s leading film star after he was detained as he entered the United States because, he said, of his Muslim surname.

Shah Rukh Khan was held at Liberty international airport in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday. He said that he was questioned for two hours by an official who apparently had no idea that he was grilling one of the world’s most famous men.

The actor, known as King Khan to hundreds of millions of fans across the sub-continent, told reporters: “I was really hassled at the American airport because my name is Khan. While all around people from India and Pakistan were vouching for me, these guys just wouldn’t let me through.”

Mr Khan’s eagerly awaited next film, My Name is Khan, is about an innocent Muslim’s experiences of being mistakenly identified as a terrorist in the United States in the wake of 9/11. The actor plays a man with Asperger’s syndrome, whose behaviour and ethnicity raise the suspicions of the US authorities. The fictional Khan then sets off on a trip to find President Obama and persuade him that he is not a terrorist. When I hear “innocent Muslim” I get the creeps…/ed

The suggestion that the real Mr Khan, who was named one of the world’s 50 most influential men by Newsweek magazine this year, fell victim to the same kind of racial profiling depicted in the film, has provoked outrage in India. Note that fellow Moslem agent provocateur Fareed Zakaria calls the shots at Newsweep… The US doesn’t do profiling on racial grounds, there are more races in the US than in India and Islam is not a race. Police have found two pistols in the vehicle of the leader of the Islamic Community in Serbia, Adem Zilkic, the Serbian Interior Ministry confirmed on Tuesday. Belgrade police discovered the weapons during a routine search. The pistols were confiscated by the Prosecutor’s Office since Zilkic and his driver, to whom the pistols belong, do not possess the appropriate weapons permits.

Ramadan (46) has been an “adviser on integration” for the city of Rotterdam for two years. Recently, he has come under criticism because he hosts a weekly talk show on the Iranian TV station PressTV, which is financed by the Tehran regime.

The sources at Rotterdam city hall said the board of council executives and the mayor feel Ramadan has lost credibility as an adviser on integration issues. The decision was expected to be made official after a 2 p.m. board meeting on Tuesday.

Divide

Rotterdam hired the Egyptian-Swiss theologist to help ‘bridge the divide’ between the city’s Muslim and non-Muslim communities. The city government also funds Ramadan’s chair at the Erasmus University, where he has been a visiting professor of Identity and Citizenship since 2007.

Ramadan, whose principal message is that Islam and European culture do not have to be at odds, is a controversial figure. He already came under fire in the Netherlands in April because of statements that were allegedly homophobic and misogynistic.

The right-wing liberal party VVD dropped out of the local coalition after the city decided to extend Ramadan’s contract for another two years. An investigation commissioned by the city had come to the conclusion that the allegations against Ramadan were unfounded.

Alarming

The Rotterdam city government was surprised last week when it learned about Ramadan’s cooperation with the Iranian TV channel.
