Update: Indonesian jihad suspects “chatted” about targeting embassies

The youngest son of firebrand cleric Abu Bakar Ba’asyir, Abdul Rohim, 31, is tipped by many to become the future leader of the jihadist movement in Indonesia. The young and energetic father of three daughters talked with The Jakarta Post’s Hasyim Widhiarto several days before the police arrested Ba’asyir, the spiritual leader of the Jamaah Islamiyah. The Qur’an (4:34) tells men to beat their disobedient wives after first warning them and then sending them to sleep in separate beds. This is, of course, an extremely controversial verse, and many Islamic spokesmen and others in the West deny that it has anything to do with wife-beating, so it is worth noting how several translators render the key word here, وَاضْرِبُوهُنَّ, waidriboohunna.

Pickthall: “and scourge them”
Yusuf Ali: “(And last) beat them (lightly)”
Al-Hilali/Khan: “(and last) beat them (lightly, if it is useful)”
Shakir: “and beat them”
Sher Ali: “and chastise them”
Khalifa: “then you may (as a last alternative) beat them”
Arberry: “and beat them”
Rodwell: “and scourge them”
Sale: “and chastise them”
Asad: “then beat them”

Marriage guides promote domestic violence

Same old s#*t:  Muslims get caught and the obligatory whining and howling begins.  Given that this has gone on for quite a long time now you would think that severe measures are being taken to deal with this and remedy the situation, but I’m afraid we will hear and see domestic violence by these misunderstanders of Islam for years to come.

Some Sydney Islamic bookshops and online stores are selling guide books to marriage which encourage domestic violence.

A Current Affair reports one of the books, titled An Excellent Husband, contains a passage that advises it is okay for husbands to beat their wives.

“The Muslim husband wins the heart of his wife so she does not disobey him in anything.

“If they are guilty of open lewdness, then refuse to share their beds … beat them, but not severely,” the passage reads.

But Rebecca Kaye, an Australian who converted to Islam seven years ago, told the program the reference to beating in the book was a misinterpretation of a verse from the Koran.

“Islam does not promote the beating of women,” she said.

“In Islamic … and non-Islamic households, domestic violence is a crime.”

“That’s regardless of what appears in these books … or those who use religion to excuse an attack on a woman.”

Tax dollars to build mosques

Americans may be surprised to learn that the United States has been an active participant in mosque construction projects overseas. In April, U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania Alfonso E. Lenhardt helped cut the ribbon at the 12th-century Kizimkazi Mosque, which was refurbished with assistance from the United States under a program to preserve culturally significant buildings. The U.S. government also helped save the Amr Ebn El Aas Mosque in Cairo, which dates back to 642. The mosque’s namesake was the Muslim conqueror of Christian Egypt, who built the structure on the site where he had pitched his tent before doing battle with the country’s Byzantine rulers. For those who think the Ground Zero Mosque is an example of “Muslim triumphalism” glorifying conquest, the Amr Ebn El Aas Mosque is an example of such a monument – and one paid for with U.S. taxpayer funds.

The mosques being rebuilt by the United States are used for religious worship, which raises important First Amendment questions. U.S.taxpayer money should not be used to preserve and promote Islam, even abroad.   More
