Egyptians Brace for Food, Gas & Money Shortages Amidst Unrest

As anti-government protests rage in cities across Egypt for the sixth day, locals have begun stockpiling food as store shelves go empty.

According to Arabic-language news daily Al-Arabiya, Cairo is already facing shortages of bread and vegetables and food imports have been almost completely suspended. Meanwhile, the future is uncertain for the 70 percent of Egyptians who live on government-subsidized bread.” (Certainty is a rare commodity these days….)

Plan To Replace  Mubarak May Be In The Works

Two of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s closest allies, his new vice president, Omar Suleiman, and his defense minister, Hussein Tantawi, are quietly working on a plan under which Mubarak would step down from power, according to a U.S. scholar who has been staying in regular touch with the Egyptian political and military leadership.

“They want to be sure that Mubarak is going to cooperate,” said Stephen P. Cohen, president of the Institute for Middle East Peace and Development and a longtime confidant of Egyptian and Israeli leaders.

The two-part plan, according to Cohen, would involve the immediate removal of 100 members of the Egyptian Parliament whose election this past fall was seen as illegitimate. They would be replaced by 100 candidates who were barred from running in the election or who were defeated because of government meddling in the election process. (That means the Muslim Brotherhood)

A second possible step would be the organization of new parliamentary and presidential elections. The plan, according to Cohen, “requires [Mubarak] to give up his office.” Asked whether Mubarak would do that, Cohen answered, “He is getting ready to do so.” (Source)

Jordan’s king sacks entire Cabinet amid street protests

King Adullah nominates ex-army general Marouf al-Bakhit as prime minister after thousands of Jordanians take to the streets and call for the current PM to resign, due to rise in food, fuel prices.

“Nobody wants regime change, but people here want accountability and an end to government corruption,” Jordanian analysts say. (J’Post)

AMMAN, Jordan — Jordan’s King Abdullah II fired his government Tuesday in the wake of street protests and asked an ex-prime minister to form a new Cabinet, ordering him to launch immediate political reforms.

The dismissal follows several large protests across Jordan— inspired by similardemonstrations in Tunisia and Egypt — calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Samir Rifai, who is blamed for a rise in fuel and food prices and slowed political reforms.

The Egypians revolting in the streets do not seek freedom and democracy as we know it in the west, but the creation of an islamic state.  The people on the streets are not friends of America or Israel and we should not be rooting them on.  As for Hussein Obama, while he remained silent as Iranians were being slaughtered on the streets by the islamist regime in Tehran, he appears to be on the side of the people on the streets of Cairo. It is highly likely that his administration encouraged the uprising in the ME.

In case you didn’t notice, and few have, there is a global Islamist revolution under way.

1. The world’s press doesn’t see it.
2. The talking heads on cable TV don’t see it.
3. Washington doesn’t see it.
4. It’s a case of not noticing the forest for the trees.

With revolts going on in Egypt, Tunisia, Pakistan, Yemen, Lebanon and Jordan, most of them clearly orchestrated from Iran, it’s easy to believe these are unrelated, disconnected uprisings.

But if you have been observing the Muslim world like I have been for 35 years, what’s happening right now is as big a development – maybe bigger – than what happened in 1979 when backers of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, with a push from Jimmy Carter, overthrew Iran’s Shah Mohamed Reza Pahlavi in one of the most tragic and unfortunate international developments of the late 20th century. We, in the West, have been paying the price for it ever since.

This is the work of the Muslim Brotherhood, with the aid and encouragement of Tehran. And the ripple effect of what we’re seeing is hard to overstate.

Catanzaro, January 31 – Three Moroccans including a Muslim cleric and his son were arrested in Calabria Monday on suspicion of training recruits for international terrorism, Italian police said.

The imam of Sellia Marina, a small Ionian coast town between Catanzaro and Crotone, was arrested at his home with his son. The third arrestee is part of the Moroccan community of Lamezia Terme near the Tyrrhenian coast of southern Calabria, police said.

Police say the three used the Internet to get and send “multimedia documents about arms and explosives training” as well as software that “could be used to sabotage computer systems”.

The homes of a further nine individuals were searched.

The sweep came at the end of a “complex” probe carried out by Digos security police and Italy’s postal police, judicial sources said.  A fourth man was arrested for drugs possession after some marijuana and a scale were found in his house.

Optimistic Egyptians say free elections, if they ever happen, would produce a vibrant democracy.

Pessimists say that the removal of the police state would lead to chaos – which would be exploited by Egypt’s jihadi groups. These have been suppressed ruthlessly by the Mubarak regime.

The country’s only properly organised mass political movement outside the ruling party is the Muslim Brotherhood, and it would do very well in any free election.

Unlike the jihadis, it does not believe it is at war with the West. It is conservative, moderate and non-violent. But it is highly critical of Western policy in the Middle East.

Coptic Christians Worry About Future Without Mubarak

Many Copts worry that Mr. Mubarak’s exit would leave them dangerously exposed—either by chaos, or to a government that may be more tolerant of Islamist extremists.  (WSJ)

This report says that Coptic Christians are defying Pope Shenouda and participating in demonstrations; on the other hand, however, a source on the ground in Egypt tells me that the news reports are wrong, and that Copts are not participating. Whatever may be the truth of the matter, it is certain that a Muslim Brotherhood state in Egypt would make their situation even worse than it is already.

It isn’t just Egypt — with its control of the critical Suez canal — that we stand to lose while Obama partiesand Shrillary vacillates incoherently. The entire Middle East may be ready to go up in flames.

In addition to Egypt, the pot is boiling over in Tunisia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, and Sudan.

With the Moonbat Messiah at the helm, America is the weak horse Osama bin Laden warned us Arabswouldn’t back. Any regime suspected of not being sufficiently hostile to the USA stands a good chance of being replaced by Muslim Brotherhood terrorists in the coming weeks.

Even this unfolding catastrophe has a silver lining: at least the government will let us drill our own oil, once the Muslim supply has been shut off. If it doesn’t, the Obama Misadministration will walk its last mile in Hosni Mubarak’s shoes.
