When the Arab Muslims, a collection of backward, nomadic warrior tribes who did not even have a fully developed script, conquered Egypt, Syria and Iran, they took control over some of the world’s largest centres of accumulated knowledge. To say that “Muslims” or “Islamic culture” created the civilizations of the Middle East can be compared to an illiterate person storming into the planet’s largest library, killing all the librarians and then claiming to have written all the books there. The cultural superiority of the Middle East in relations to Europe did not begin with Islam’s entry into the area. In fact, it ended with it. One of the great riddles of history is how this once-dynamic region could become the world’s number one problem spot. It so happens that this decline coincides with the region’s Islamization, although some would claim that it had already started before this. Islam’s much-vaunted “Golden Age” was in reality just the twilight of the conquered pre-Islamic cultures, an echo of times passed.
It is true that no civilization exists in a vacuum. Modern Western civilization owes much to Egyptians, Persians, Sumerians, Byzantines, Assyrians, Jews, Indians and Chinese. We owe little, if anything to Islam.

Muslims are touchingly aware, even as they outwardly express other, more triumphalist notions, that Muslim socieities have been, from every point of view, failures — failures in their encouragement of despotisms, failures in the inshallah-fatalism that underlies economic stasis, failures in their societies, where both women and non-Muslims are subject to unequal and intolerable treatment.
And among those many failures, the dreamy belief that there was once a “Golden Age of Islamic Science,” its achievements greatly exaggerated, with no recognition of how much was simply taken, lock, stock, and algebra-gunpowder-and-printing barrel, from India and from China, and claimed for Islam and for Muslims.
When one looks at the non-orthodox beliefs of, say, ar-Razi (Rhazes), realizes that many of those whose achievements, in lands under Islamic rule, were not Muslims but Arabic-using Christians and Jews, or new converts, only one generation, or poossibly two, away from a Christian or Jewish miilieu, and that much that has been described as “Islamic science” or “science under Islam” took place despite, not because of, Islam, which in spirit and letter is opposed to free and skeptical inquiry, and unlike Western Christendom, has remained so opposed, and will always do so. Muslims do not want to recognize the failures, the absence of achievement in science, after the first few hundred years of Muslim conquests. Nor do they wish to recognize that the end of the period of scientific achievement oin Dar al-Islam can be linked to the mass conversions in lands conquered by Muslims that inexorably brought about a change from a largely non-Muslim to a largely Muslim population. Islam discourages the very attitudes that the enterprise of modern science most requires. And there is no solution for this, except either to forego participation in that world-wide enterprise, or to limit the power of Islam over the minds of its adherents, and its role in their lives.
The desperate attempt to read into the Qur’an all kinds of modern developments in science reflects this felt inferiority behind all the Muslim bluster about “Islamic science” or, in George Saliba’s version, “Arabic science.” (which means, or should: science as conducted by those who, whether Muslim or not, used Arabic as their main language). Since Islam encourages the habit of mental submission, the number of those who believe in conspiracy theories, and in crackbrain theories of every kind, are not merely present, as they are in all societies, but in fact far outnumber the handful of those whom we might recognize as fellow inhabitants of something like the same mental universe that all the rest of us inhabit. These crackbrain theorists locate in some vague Qur’anic phrase now all of vulcanology, and now, in another phrase, all of Mandelbrot’s fractals, and over here, in this phrase, we can find Muhammad setting out the double-helix in all of its Mill-Hill glory. No need for Watson, Crick, Maurice Wilkins, or Rosalind Franklin to come along. It was there, all of it, already, in some phrase in the Qur’an, if only poor naked forked Infidel man had known where to look. But he didn’t, the dope.

Two Palestinian employees detained mere days before they planned to lace food at Ramat Gan grill bar with tasteless, odorless toxin
The thwarting of an alarming terror plot was cleared for publication on Thursday, almost three weeks after a joint Shin Bet and police operation led to the arrest of two Palestinian employees of the ‘Grill Express’ restaurant in Ramat Gan.
The men, Eihab Abu Rial and Anas Salum, both 21-year-old residents of the West Bank city of Nablus, had planned to lace dishes served at the establishment with a powerful toxin without odor or taste, in the hopes of killing as many patrons as possible.
The two did not have working permits and were residing in Israel illegally. While in Nablus, they had been recruited to the al-Aqsa Martyr’s Bridges, the military wing of Fatah, under the guidance and funding of Hizbullah.
The men were arrested by police investigators following information obtained by the Shin Bet, several
short days before they planned to carry out the attack.

Umar Islam spoke of revenge in the video, the court heardÂ
Osama Bin Laden was the inspiration for one of the men accused of plotting to blow up planes flying from London to North America, his trial has heard.
In a 19-minute video shown to the jury, Umar Islam, 29, says “Sheikh Osama” has “inspired me personally to follow the true path of the prophet”.
The video shows him saying Allah “loves us to die and kill in his path”.
He and the seven other men deny conspiring to murder and endangering planes in 2006.
In the video, shown in Woolwich Crown Court, he said: “To Mullah Omar (a Taleban leader) and Sheikh Osama and the brothers, keep on going, keep on remaining firm, but truly you have inspired many of the Muslims and you have inspired me personally to follow the true path of the prophet.”
The video was found in the back of a car owned by one of his co-accused, Assad Sarwar, prosecutors said.
 Five of his co-defendants also recorded suicide videos outlining their hatred of the West and threatening further attacks, prosecutors said.
During the filming of Mr Islam’s video, the alleged leader of the gang, Abdulla Ahmed Ali, 27, was asking questions from behind the camera, the court heard.
Mr Islam began the video saying: “This is from Umar Islam, the son of Islam, to the people of the world, to let you know the reasons for this action which Inshallah [God willing] I am going to undertake.
He said: “This is revenge for the actions of the USA in the Muslim lands and their accomplices such as the British and the Jews.
“This is a warning to the non-believers that if they do not leave our lands there are many more like us and many more like me ready to strike until the law of Allah is established on this Earth.”
During the video, Mr Islam referred to Palestine, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay.
He said Muslims must attack “military targets, economic targets and government targets” and the public must stay away from them.
The jury was told a second video was found on the same cassette, recorded by co-accused Arafat Waheed Khan.
In that four-minute video, Mr Khan accused taxpayers of equipping soldiers to kill Muslims.
The other defendants are: Assad Sarwar, 24, of High Wycombe, Bucks; Tanvir Hussain, 27, of Leyton, east London; Mohammed Gulzar, 26, of Barking, east London; Ibrahim Savant, 27, of Stoke Newington, north London; and Waheed Zaman, 23, of Walthamstow, east London.

Bulgaria’s Government was accused of high-level involvement with organised crime gangs yesterday, in a hard-hitting report that highlighted the failure of the ruling coalition to stamp out corruption or convict anyone for 150 gangland killings.
Government secrets were leaked to mafia figures involved in drug trafficking and a senior minister met alleged underworld bosses regularly, according to the investigation by MPs into corruption in the Interior Ministry. The profits of the drug trade were channelled to terrorist groups in Lebanon and elsewhere in the Middle East.
“Bulgarian crime groups engaged in trafficking . . . drugs sometimes work together with Arab citizens linked to terrorist organisations,” the MPs said.
“We can make the conclusion that part of the money accumulated from drug trafficking is used to finance the work of terrorist organisations such as Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad and Christian militias.”
The report came after Georgi Stoev, who wrote about the Bulgarian mafia, and Borislav Georgiev, the chief of a nuclear energy company, were murdered this week. It also follows a call from the European Commission for urgent action against corruption and organised crime, with €6.85 billion (£5.5 billion) of EU aid hanging in the balance.
EU officials are frustrated that the pressure they can put on Bulgaria to carry out reforms to its police and judiciary is limited now that it has been allowed into the 27-nation body. They are also worried that sanctions will lead to the collapse of the Government of Sergei Stanishev, the reformist Prime Minister.
The MPs’ report spoke of “worrying practices in the functioning of the Interior Ministry that have led to a lower ability to uncover crime, due to the leaking of classified information to criminals under investigation”.
During a visit to Sofia, José Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, berated the Bulgarian judiciary, though he was happy to accept the Stara Planina, First Class, the country’s highest honour.
The three-party coalition Government discussed the crisis yesterday and agreed to adopt reforms proposed by Rumen Petkov, the Interior Minister. But some analysts believe that the clean-up of the judicial and police system can only begin after the removal of Mr Petkov, a powerful figure in the Prime Minister’s own Socialist Party. As the coalition met, an important gangland trial was delayed again.
‘It’s the decision I expected. Anything else would have been a blow against democracy and in conflict with the constitution,’ she said.
Søren Espersen, DF’s board member, was the only one voting against the headscarf in parliament.
‘I’m saddened by the decision. It’s a bow to the oppression the headscarf symbolises,’ said Espersen.
The board’s decision parallels a ruling earlier in the week by the Board of Justices, which stated that judges may also wear the Muslim headscarf.

The Islamic Faith Society will co-operate with a leading Islamic institute to provide graduate courses for Danish Muslims
Well-educated Danish Muslims will soon be able to take Islamic university-level courses in law, economics and international relations here in the country, reports Berlingske Tidende newspaper.
The Islamic Faith Society will begin offering graduate courses in conjunction with the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, one of the most renowned religious and intellectual institutions in the Muslim world.
Bilal Assaad, chairperson of the Islamic Faith Society said: ‘Instead of Danish Muslims having to travel to Egypt or other Muslim countries, we feel that it would be advantageous for them to take graduate courses here in Copenhagen.’
Al Azhar was founded as a mosque in 975 and since then, it has distinguished itself as one of the leading learning facilities in the Islamic world. Now a mosque and a university, it houses one of the world’s largest and most valuable collections of historical books and other documents.
‘It is an ongoing process, and although we’re pleased with Al Azhar’s consent to work with us, we’re putting great weight on designing courses that will fit into Danish society,’ said Assaad, who also emphasised the courses would contain more than just religious content.
Rasmus Alenius Boserup, director of the Danish-Egyptian Dialogue Institute in Cairo, believed it was a ‘logical development’ that the Islamic Faith Society would turn to Al-Azhar for co-operation in developing its activities in Denmark.
‘There’s hardly anything dangerous in that,’ said Boserup, who also added that Al-Azhar had in the last 50 years secularised its activities immensely, although it was still in the area of religion it marked itself internationally.

He also said choosing Al-Azhar was a natural choice for the society since the university is the best when seeking knowledge about Islamic theology and thought.

A Star Tribune newspaper column has prompted a state investigation into a charter school. A substitute teacher said a school in Inver Grove Heights is blurring the line of separation of church and state.
Being a charter school Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy, or TIZA, is supported by tax dollars. The teacher told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the presence of religion she observed at the school took her by surprise.
TIZA Executive Director Azad Zaman insisted the school follows with state and federal laws.

However, TIZA Academy is sponsored by Islamic Relief USA, based in California.
The questions came after substitute teacher Amanda Getz taught at TIZA last month and told the Star Tribune about things she observed that day that shocked her.
“I’ve been in a lot of schools and I’ve never been in a school where they had washing rituals, or they had prayer, or where they had a room where you had to take your shoes off,” Getz said.
State law requires the school to fly an American flag during school hours, however no flag flies outside of TIZA Academy.

BREAKING NEWS: CHINA has cracked two terrorist groups in its heavily Muslim west that were planning attacks aimed at the Beijing Olympics, the nation’s security ministry says.

One group was plotting to kidnap foreign journalists, tourists and athletes during the Games, Chinese police said.
“The terrorists, who numbered 45 in all, had attempted to carry out sabotage to undermine the Beijing Olympic Games,” the official Xinhua news agency quoted Public Security Ministry spokesman Wu Heping as saying today.
In one case, police in the western Xinjiang region January broke up a group “sent from abroad” by the East Turkestan Islamic Movement to stage a violent attack, it said.
Police seized a large amount of explosives, materials used in manufacturing explosive and Islamic “Jihad” training materials, according to Wu.
Wu said all the suspects involved had confessed.
Xinhua provided no details on the second case.
China maintains it faces an imminent terror threat from the independence-minded East Turkestan Islamic Movement, which is listed by the United Nations and the United States as a terrorist organisation.
Xinjiang officials had already said last month that police on January 27 smashed a terrorist group planning an attack on the Beijing Olympics and that a separate bid to blow up a Chinese airliner was foiled in March.
However, Chinese authorities had refused to publicise evidence relating to either incident, leading to questions from rights groups about whether they were fabricated to justify intensified security in the region ahead of the Olympics.
It was not immediately clear whether today’s report was referring to the previously reported incidents.
China said two terrorists were killed and 15 captured in the January 27 raid in Urumqi, but residents in the area said last week they had no recollection of any violent clash.
China has kept a tight lid on Xinjiang, whose millions of Muslims have long bridled at rule by Beijing.
