PANIC is once again sweeping through Downing Street over immigration, the political issue with the most potential to destroy Gordon Brown’s hopes of winning the next election.
Labour’s own poll research indicates that millions of voters – even within the party’s own heartlands – remain deeply angry at the mass influx of newcomers to Britain allowed over the past decade.

In a sign of his concern, the Prime Minister tried playing the statesman yesterday, making a weighty speech about British citizenship that was full of such noble phrases as “shared values” and “rights matched with responsibilities”.

But nowhere in his lecture did Brown make any mention of the size of the population flood looming over our increasingly crowded island. It seems a careless omission given the stark warnings that the PM has received from his advisers.

Earlier this month, a little-noticed document published by Brown’s strategy unit made clear that the record numbers of arrivals seen in recent years is just the beginning.

“Over the next decade and beyond the population is projected to continue to grow at a faster rate than in the Eighties and early Nineties,” it said.

And it forecasts that the country’s population will rise by an extra seven million to 67 million, by 2020, driven largely by “people living longer and net migration”.

This population explosion is the chilling context for the Govern ment’s latest vow to “crack down” on border controls and ensure “managed migration”. And in the light of the expected influx, these measures to tighten up the process of applying for British citizenship seem woefully inadequate.

Rahman, Ali and Safi are members of Happy Family Clowns group, established in 2004 to put smiles on the faces of Iraqi children.
A few months ago the group started receiving death threats warning them against continuing their show, entitled A Child is as Scared as a Country.

But the clowns kept going, until two members of the troupe were murdered.

This was enough to drive the surviving three to leave Iraq.

“We don’t know why they targeted us. We were entertaining children,” says Rahman.

Like many thousands of fearful Iraqis, Rahman and his fellow clowns left their home and fled to Syria.

Not knowing what awaited them in Syria, they went to the UN refugee agency to register and ended up working with the UNHCR to entertain refugee children.

Harmless victims

Despite all efforts to provide security in Iraq, large numbers of Iraqis are still fleeing the country, with about 1,000 reportedly crossing into Syria daily, where they join a population of more than one million.

The group hopes to be able to develop its repertoire, and maybe even travel the world giving performances.

“I miss Iraq but I cannot go back. We are afraid we will be killed… That’s our destiny,” said Rahman.

Since 9/11, he said, commentators such as Malkin, Ann Coulter, Charles Krauthammer, Daniel Pipes and David Horowitz have transferred old anti-Arab stereotypes to Islam, in a stream of “incredibly bigoted commentary” that would not have been tolerated before then.

“This is what explains the collapse of the good name of Islam,” he said.

In this context, Ibish said, the West sees Islam as bent on its destruction and American Muslims as suspected allies who cannot credibly deny otherwise. Thus, ethnic profiling becomes reasonable and forced internment or mandatory identification of Muslims becomes a potential remedy, he said.

The U.S. ambassador to the Philippines met the leader of the country’s largest Muslim rebel group on Tuesday in an effort to defuse tensions over U.S. soldiers entering Muslim areas in the south.

Earlier this week, thousands of people protested against the U.S. military’s plans to hold humanitarian missions in areas controlled by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) as part of annual training exercises with Philippine troops.

“The U.S. ambassador assured us the U.S. soldiers would not be involved in any combat activities,” Mohaqher Iqbal, head of the MILF peace panel with the government, told Reuters.

3 charged in France over shooting, violence at mosque

MONTPELLIER, France (AP) – French authorities filed preliminary charges Tuesday against three men in connection with a weekend shooting and other violence in a mosque in southeast France, a prosecutor said.
The Al-Rahma mosque in the town of Nimes was shuttered indefinitely after the scuffle Sunday, in which a worshipper was hospitalized with gunshot wounds to the legs, assistant prosecutor Gildas Pavy said by phone.
The disturbance apparently stemmed from a swelling and increasingly violent disagreement over the last several weeks between «rival groups» over the way the mosque has been run by imam Driss Saoudi, the prosecutor said.

West’s notion of freedom is an open license to vilify Muslims

On February 13th 2008, at least seventeen Danish newspapers vowed to defend freedom of expression and reprinted a cartoon of Prophet Mohammed. The conservative broadsheet Berlingske Tidende wrote in an editorial: “Freedom of expression gives you the right to think, to speak and to draw what you like… no matter how many terrorist plots there are…” It is evident that the Danish media did not learn anything from the outcry of Muslims that accompanied the newspaper Jyllands-Posten decision to publish the original cartoons in 2005. Denmark is the not the only western country that insists on vilification of Islam.

The Dutch government has refused to take action against Dutch Member of Parliament Geert Wilders who has recently made a derogatory movie about the Quran. The government has defended Wilders‘s actions by citing freedom of expression. A year earlier, the Dutch government banned the Burqah. In Britain under the guise of freedom and tolerance, the Shariah debate has been used by the media and government ministers to denigrate Islam and set a new price for Muslim loyalty to the State.

BRUSSELS, Feb 19 (KUNA) — The new head of the United Nations Counter-terrorism (CTC) Executive Directorate rejected today any attempts to link acts of terrorism with Islam or any other religion.
“The UN has never made any link with a particular religion and terrorism”, Mike Smith told a press conference here Tuesday.
“To make any link with Islam and terrorism is quite unfair, he said noting that a majority of victims of terrorism are probably Muslims.
“It is kind of crazy to try and say that terrorism is Islam, said the former Australian diplomat who also speaks Arabic and served as his countrys ambassador to Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia.

He however, noted that some extremists have tried to link Islam to their cause. “That is enormously sad and if I was a Muslim, I would be very angry about that,” said Smith who was appointed to his new UN post last October.

The UN official was in Brussels to discuss with EU officials the UNs global counter-terrorism strategy which was adopted by the General Assembly in September 2006.

KLM refuses service to Geert Wilders

SCHIPHOL – Airline KLM refused to take Geert Wilders on a flight to Moscow on Monday morning because of problems with the Freedom Party (PVV) leader’s security.

After consultation the delegation of which Wilders was a part departed for Russia without him. KLM says that the MP had “specific requests regarding his security.” Since these requests had not been submitted to the airline in advance, they could not be met, a spokesperson said.

Wilders denies this vehemently. “There were absolutely no extra requests made. This trip was prepared and they knew I was coming.”

The parliamentary foreign affairs committee travelled to Moscow on Monday for a working visit. Wilders serves on this committee but had to return home after being refused for the flight. “Unbelievable,” the politician said.

Wilders will most likely be able to travel to Moscow sometime later today. Speaker of Parliament Gerdi Verbeet said on Monday she regretted that Wilders had been restricted in his work as MP because of security measures.
