In a January 26 op-ed in the Iranian daily Kayhan, the paper’s editor, Hossein Shariatmadari, who is close to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, called on Muslims to unite in a retaliatory attack on American, European, and Israeli “sensitive centers” because of “the war crimes that these countries are committing in the Gaza Strip” and because of their support for Israel.

In his op-ed, Shar’iatmadari stressed that American and European civilians must be harmed in these attacks, so as to make the U.S. and the European countries change their policy towards Israel. He further called for harming Israelis worldwide, and explained that Islamic regimes that prevent an Islamic attack on Israel must be toppled, because they are defending the enemy.

Excessive deference to Islam.

My favorite headline of the year so far comes from The Daily Mail in Britain: “Government Renames Islamic Terrorism As ‘Anti-Islamic Activity’ To Woo Muslims.”

Her Majesty’s government is not alone in feeling it’s not always helpful to link Islam and the, ah, various unpleasantnesses with suicide bombers and whatnot. Even in his cowboy Crusader heyday, President Bush liked to cool down the crowd with a lot of religion-of-peace stuff. But the British have now decided that kind of mealy-mouthed “respect” is no longer sufficient. So, henceforth, any terrorism perpetrated by persons of an Islamic persuasion will be designated “anti-Islamic activity” Britain’s home secretary, Jacqui Smith, unveiled the new brand name in a speech a few days ago. “There is nothing Islamic about the wish to terrorize, nothing Islamic about plotting murder, pain and grief,” she told her audience. “Indeed, if anything, these actions are anti-Islamic.”

Well, yes, one sort of sees what she means. Killing thousands of people in Manhattan skyscrapers in the name of Islam does, among a certain narrow-minded type of person, give Islam a bad name, and thus could be said to be “anti-Islamic” — in the same way that the Luftwaffe raining down death and destruction on Londoners during the Blitz was an “anti-German activity.” But I don’t recall even Neville Chamberlain explaining, as if to a five-year-old, that there is nothing German about the wish to terrorize and invade, and that this is entirely at odds with the core German values of sitting around eating huge sausages in beer gardens while wearing lederhosen.

Still, it should add a certain surreal quality to BBC news bulletins: “The Prime Minister today condemned the latest anti-Islamic activity as he picked through the rubble of Downing Street looking for his 2008 Wahhabi Community Outreach Award. In a related incident, the anti-Islamic activists who blew up Buckingham Palace have unfortunately caused the postponement of the Queen’s annual Ramadan banquet.”

A few days ago, a pre-trial hearing in an Atlanta courtroom made public for the first time a video made by two Georgia Tech students. Syed Haris Ahmed and Ehsanul Islam Sadequee went to Washington and took footage of key buildings, and that “casing video” then wound up in the hands of Younis Tsouli, an al-Qaeda recruiter in London. As the film shot by the Georgia students was played in court, Ehsanul Islam Sadequee’s voice could be heard on the soundtrack: “This is where our brothers attacked the Pentagon.”

“A world without Islam would still see most of the enduring bloody rivalries whose wars and tribulations dominate the geopolitical landscape,” Graham Fuller, the CIA’s former head of long-term strategic planning, writes in the cover story of this month’s issue of the magazine Foreign Policy.

Fuller, 69, who lives in semi-retirement north of Vancouver, says in the article that a terrorist attack on the U.S. like that launched Sept. 11, 2001, would likely have occurred even if the Muslim religion had never existed.

“If not 9/11, some similar event like it was destined to come,” Fuller, an adjunct professor at Simon Fraser University, argues in his opinion piece, titled “A World Without Islam.”

Islam provides a convenient scapegoat for those trying to explain the origins of terrorism, he says.

“It’s much easier than exploring the impact of the massive global footprint of the world’s sole superpower,” says Fuller, who spent most of his career with the CIA in Muslim countries, advising top U.S. government officials.

“In the bluntest of terms, would there have been a 9/11 without Islam? It’s important to remember how easily religion can be invoked when other long-standing grievances are to blame. Sept. 11, 2001, was not the beginning of history.”

On 13 November, London mayor Ken Livingstone launched The Search for Common Ground, a study commissioned by him that looks at the portrayal of Muslims and Islam in the national media.

The report recommends that news organisations employ more Muslims (along with other minorities) so their workforces are more representative of the society and the world on which they report; that news concerning Islam and Muslims should – like all news – be accurate; and that when reporting on sensitive and difficult subjects, such as those involving members of Britain’s minority communities, those working within news organisations should at least reflect on the possible consequences of their actions.

Terror career over: George Habash, the founder of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, died Saturday evening at his home in Amman, a senior Jordanian official said. Habash was 82-years-old.

Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas declared three days of mourning in the wake of Habash’s death. The PA chairman also ordered Palestinian flags to be brought down to half mast and mourners to be received at the presidential office in Ramallah.

Habash was born in Lod to Greek Orthodox parents and became a refugee in the wake of the 1948 war. He was a medical student at The American University of Beirut, and was among the founders of the Arab Nationalist Movement in the 1950s.

A billionaire Arab sheikh said that British law worked on “money not justice”, and vowed to “stitch up” an employee who dared to challenge him, an employment tribunal was told yesterday.

Sheikh Maher al-Tajir, whose family owns 24,000 acres (9,700ha) of land in Perthshire and the Highland Spring bottled water company, is alleged to have told Chris Mulqueeney that he had enough money to buy anything he wanted in Britain, including the police and the justiciary.

When the former head gamekeeper said that Britain wasn’t like that, the sheikh is said to have replied: “You’re so patriotic. Hasn’t anyone told you that the law of this great land works on money, not justice, and I’ve got enough money to buy any of them? The police, the justiciary — all have their price in this country.”

The claims came as Mr Mulqueeney, 48, who worked as Mr al-Tajir’s head gamekeeper after moving his family from Kent to Scotland in 2001, told an employment tribunal in Edinburgh that the sheikh launched a two-hour verbal assault on him during a meeting in September 2004.

As a top Lebanese police investigator into a spate of bomb attacks as well as the activities of al-Qaeda-inspired groups in the country, Captain Wissam Eid had no shortage of potential enemies. One of those foes got to Eid Friday morning, killing him and at least three other people in a powerful car bomb explosion, nearly identical to the attacks he had been investigating.

“We got the message but we will carry on our mission in protecting Lebanon,” said Brigadier General Ashraf Rifi, the head of Lebanon’s paramilitary Internal Security Forces, at the scene of the attack. The 31-year-old Eid ran the technical department of the ISF’s intelligence branch and was a communications specialist.

So who killed Eid? Neighboring Syria seeking to re-impose its grip on Lebanon? Al-Qaeda-related groups attempting to destabilize Lebanon? A combination of the two perhaps?

The explosion below an overpass in an eastern suburb of Beirut turned Eid’s car into a tangled wreck of fire-blackened metal, destroyed or damaged at least 20 other vehicles, shattered glass in a nearby office building and sent a plume of dark smoke into the sky from burning vehicles. Soldiers sealed off the area as fire engines and ambulances raced to the scene of the blast.

The European Parliament doesn’t want Europe to ban girls in elementary schools or wearing a headscarf or veil. The rules differ in the 27 EU countries such that it’s better not to impose compulsory European rules, according to a majority of the parliament.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – Gunmen kidnapped a burqa-clad American aid worker and her driver while they were traveling through southern Afghanistan early Saturday, a provincial governor said.

The two were stopped by gunmen outside the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, said Gov. Asadullah Khalid. He blamed the kidnappings on the “enemy of Islam and the enemy of Afghanistan.”

Several Westerners — including two German construction workers and two Italian journalists — have been kidnapped in Afghanistan in the last year, but this was the first kidnapping of an American in recent memory.

Traveling around Kandahar city has turned increasingly dangerous in the last year, as the Taliban insurgency has spread throughout southern Afghanistan. Western civilians who operate there often travel with armed guards and with extreme caution. The area is rife with Taliban militants but also with criminals linked to the country’s booming opium poppy trade.

Khalid said the 49-year-old American was wearing a burqa when she was taken. She worked for the aid agency Asian Rural Life Development Foundation, he said.

The U.S. Embassy said it had no immediate information.

The government’s proposed counterterrorism measures risk ‘alienating’ Muslims, it was admitted yesterday. A Home Office equality impact assessment said measures in the counterterrorism bill could foster a sense of persecution among Muslims and lessen their willingness to report suspicious activities.

Proposals to make it an offence to gather information on members of the armed forces that could be useful to a terrorist would increase the sense Muslims are “not sure what they were allowed to talk about any more,” the Home Office consultation noted.

And the government’s keystone plan to increase the period for detention without charge to 42 days risked harming relations and information-sharing between Muslim communities and the police.

“Muslim community representatives expressed a concern that this may lead to increased reluctance among their communities to provide vital co-operation and assistance to the police and security services,” the equality impact assessment, which was published alongside the bill, said.

There is already a perception that most people arrested under counterterror legislation are Muslims, (they are! -ed.) the assessment found, and people felt they were targeted as a religious group rather than individuals.

Overall the consultation pinpointed “strong concerns” that the legislation is anti-Muslim” and the Home Office was told to do more to win the “hearts and minds” of the Muslim community.

Standards Board for England rejects Tablighi Jamaat complaint

Local authority watchdog, the Standards Board for England, has rejected an official complaint by Olympics mega-mosque promoters Tablighi Jamaat (TJ) against Cllr Alan Craig, leader of the Christian Peoples Alliance group on Newham Council.

Board officers decided that TJ’s allegations against Cllr Craig did not even warrant investigation. They ruled that Cllr Craig’s statements about TJ and the proposed Olympics mega-mosque were most likely to be lawful and protected by the freedom of expression articles of the Human Rights Act.

“Referring a councillor to the Standards Board is a very serious matter; I’m sorry Tablighi Jamaat have gone down this road to intimidate and close down democratic discussion,” said Cllr Craig, who has been leading local opposition to the mega-mosque.

“They are an ambitious and powerful global Islamic sect but this small-minded action has backfired on them,” he continued. “I’m glad the Standard Board has recognised my opposition to this enormous landmark mosque is legitimate.”

TJ complained that Cllr Craig’s statements had (1) failed to comply with equality laws; (2) failed to treat others with respect; (3) prevented council officers from acting in an unbiased fashion; and (4) brought his office into disrepute. The Standards Board considered that none of these allegations warranted referral to an ethical standards officer for investigation.

“Tablighi Jamaat are proposing a huge project which will directly impact all of east London,” said Alan Craig. “If built, it will be their international headquarters. Therefore they should drop their secrecy, their silence and their attempts to intimidate.

“They should instead enter into public debate so that we can discuss both their organisation and their project with them.

“What have they got to hide?”

YALA, Thailand (AFP) — Suspected separatist militants shot dead five Muslims, including a 16-year-old boy, in separate attacks in Thailand’s restive south, police said Saturday.

Another Muslim, aged 50, was also shot dead outside his house in Yala late Friday. On the same night in neighbouring Pattani a 56-year-old villager was gunned down in a drive-by shooting, officers said, while a man aged 48 was killed as he drove his motorcycle to a mosque.

A devastating explosion in northern Iraq was spearheaded by foreign fighters under the sponsorship of Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, son of the Libyan leader, a security chief for Sunni tribesmen who rose up against Al Qaeda in Iraq said Saturday.

Col. Jubair Rashid Naief, who also is a police official in Anbar province, said the Anbar Awakening Council had alerted the U.S. military to the possible arrival in the northern city of Mosul of the Seifaddin Regiment, made up of about 150 foreign and Iraqi fighters, as long as three months ago.

The U.S. military did not immediately respond to an e-mail request for comment about Naief’s claim.

“They crossed the Syrian border nearest to Mosul within the last two to three months. Since then, they have taken up positions in the city and begun blowing up cars and launching other terror operations,” Naief told The Associated Press.

The so-called Anbar Awakening Council is a grouping of Sunni tribes in the western province that last year turned against Al Qaeda and began working with U.S. forces. The council is credited with the sharp drop in violence in the former insurgent redoubt.

The movement has since been spread by Americans through Baghdad and surrounding districts. That and the introduction of 30,000 additional U.S. troops by mid-2007 are seen as the main factors in the recent decline in violence in the country.

Naief did not explain why the younger Gadhafi would be sponsoring the group of fighters. Seif Gadhafi, however, was quoted by the Austrian Press Agency last year as warning Europeans against more attacks by radical Islamists.

“The only solution to contain radicalism is the rapid departure of Western troops from Iraq as well as Afghanistan, and a solution to the Palestinian question,” Gadhafi was quoted as saying.

Touted as a ‘reformer’, 36-year-old Gadhafi has increasingly been sharing his father’s spotlight and reaching out to the West to soften Libya’s image and return it to the international mainstream. He has no official government post, but many see him as the man most likely to take power in the North African country when his father steps down or dies.

EU far-right groups to form party

Far-right political leaders from four EU nations have unveiled plans to form a pan-European “patriotic” party.

The four leaders said they already were in talks with other EU parties

The heads of far-right parties from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria and France said their aim was to defend Europe against “Islamisation” and immigrants.

At a news conference in Vienna, they said they expected to launch the party by 15 November.

The move comes several months after the collapse of a far-right bloc in the European Parliament.

The Identity, Tradition and Sovereignty (ITS) bloc disbanded itself in November after a row between its Italian and Romanian members over race.

Rebuke

In Vienna, the heads of Austria’s Freedom Party, Belgium’s Vlaams Belang, Bulgaria’s Ataka and the French National Front said the new party would be a counter-balance to other political forces in Europe.

“We say: Patriots of all the countries of Europe, unite! Because only together will we solve our problems,” Freedom Party leader Heinz-Christian Strache said.

“Irresponsible mass immigration to Europe from outside Europe due to irresponsible politicians… is the problem,” he said.

Asked about the chances of success of the new party, French National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen, who was also present in Vienna, said: “It’s not necessary to hope in order to try.”

The far-right leaders need support from seven EU parties to launch the group, but Mr Strache said that the goal was to have “more than 10 parties as members and ideally one party from each EU country”.

The new party has no name yet, but Mr Strache said European Patriotic Party or European Freedom Party were working titles.

The plan for the new party drew a rebuke from Austria’s governing Social Democrats far left wankers who said the proposed political force was absurd and contradictory.
