CORDOBA, Spain (AFP) – Islamophobia gathered pace in the West with the end of the Cold War, long before the September 11, 2001 attacks against the US, participants at a two-day OSCE conference that began in Spain Tuesday said.

“After the end of the Cold War, certain people took Muslims and Islam to be the new scapegoat and enemy,” Mustapha Cherif, an expert on Islam at the University of Algiers, told AFP on the sidelines of the gathering.

“But after the senseless act of September 11, this has been amplified,” added Cherif, who is known for his commitment to battling religious hatred.

Delegations from the 56 nations that make up the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) are taking part in the conference in the southern Spanish city of Cordoba on the topic of intolerance toward Muslims.

Spain currently holds the rotating presidency of the OSCE, which promotes human rights, democracy and conflict prevention in Europe, North America and Central Asia.

Arab League Secretary-General Amr Mussa told the gathering that after the end of the Cold War, “conservative extremists in certain Western circles” needed to find a new enemy.

“We can’t live in stability and security if some are perceived as first class citizens and others second class citizens. This has to disappear,” he added.

Danish cities have volunteered to give sanctuary to persecuted literary figures

Authors, illustrators and journalists on the run from repressive regimes will soon be able to seek refuge in Danish cities.

The government together with the Danish branch of international literary organisation PEN has decided to join the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN) that grants persecuted literary personalities a safe haven and stipends.

ICORN, which was founded by Salman Rushdie after he was made the target of an Islamic fatwa in 1989 for his novel ‘Satanic Verses’, is a worldwide network of cities that allow writers to continue their work without fear of reprisal from authoritative regimes.

Brian Mikkelsen, the culture minister, said he considered ICORN as a way for Denmark to demonstrate its support for freedom of expression.

‘It’s important that we support authors and writers who are repressed and harassed when they insist on the right to voice their opinion and criticise political figures,’ said Mikkelsen.

The proposal has received support from a number of parties, including the Social Liberals.

‘The programme is a way to support democracy in the world and at the same time ensure that we secure new inspiration in Danish cultural life,’ said Elsebeth Gerner Nielsen, the Social Liberal cultural spokesperson.

Mille Rode, the head of the Danish division of PEN, also welcomed the decision to join ICORN.

‘We are extremely happy that this is happening,’ said Rode. ‘It’s a very important signal that we will not accept the repression of freedom of expression.’

She envisioned that the literary figures would meet with cultural organisations in their host cities to decide what sort of activities they could participate in while staying in Denmark.

‘In some situations, an author might want to hold a low profile and be out of public view while in others they would want to appear in public,’ she said.

Copenhagen and Ã…rhus as well as the University of Southern Denmark and a folk high school have already expressed an interest as serving as host cities.

The founder of the Iraqi extremist group Ansar al-Islam appealed Tuesday to Norway’s Supreme Court to overturn an order to expel him from the Scandanavian country as a threat to national security.

Two lower courts had upheld a government order to expel Kurdish leader Mullah Krekar, a refugee in Norway since 1991, even though conditions in Iraq made it unlikely that he could promptly be returned to his homeland.

Norway’s highest court will now review the grounds for the order, which also strips Krekar of his refugee status, visa rights and all related benefits. It also will assess whether he is a threat to national security.

Krekar, born Najm al-Din Faraj Ahmad, founded Ansar al-Islam which is listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and others. The mostly Kurdish Sunni extremist group is tied to al-Qaida in Iraq and suspected in suicide bombings of coalition forces in Iraq.

Krekar has said he no longer leads Ansar al-Islam, and denies links to al-Qaida. The United Nations added him to a list of people believed associated with al-Qaida in December 2006.

The hearings are expected to last through Friday, although the ruling may come later. The high court can either uphold the earlier rulings, which would be final, or send the case back to a lower court.

In court, Krekar’s lawyer Harald Stabell argued that his client has not been allowed a chance to adequately defend himself because the report declaring him a national security risk is classified.

“For Krekar, this has meant weakened legal protection during the handling of his case,” said Stabell.

Norwegian state radio network NRK reported Tuesday that Krekar runs several Internet sites, including one called http://www.dorbeen.com that presents American loses in Iraq and Afghanistan as positive developments and has links to other sites with videos of attacks on U.S. forces.

Krekar has refused to talk about the site. NRK said there is no doubt that the sites are registered to Krekar’s wife and are operated from his home address in Oslo.

The prosecutors also said Krekar had repeatedly returned home to Kurdish areas in northern Iraq even though he had been granted refugee status in Norway by claiming it was unsafe for him there.

The reports speaks about an “extremely intolerant and anti-democratic” movement which is reportedly ‘not violent‘ however.

The report, presented to Home Affairs Minister Guusje ter Horst, says Muslim neo-radicalism is characterised by increasingly professional leadership.

MOGADISHU, Oct 9, 2007 (AFP) – A key Somali Islamist leader on Tuesday called for jihad, or holy war, vowing that a bloody insurgency against the Ethiopian-backed government in Mogadishu would end only with the return of Islamic law.

“Our mission is clear. What we want is to free our country from Christian colonisers — by this I mean Ethiopia,” said Sheikh Mukhtar Robow, a radical Islamist leader who recently resurfaced in the Somali capital.

“At this point, jihad is all we need. There is no political process we can be involved in unless we get a government practicing Sharia (Islamic law),” the militant leader told AFP by phone.

Sheikh Mukhtar — also known as Abu Mansur since he trained in Afghanistan and fought alongside the Taliban there in the early 2000’s — presented himself as “a spokesman for the Islamic movement” in Mogadishu.

“Our aim is to liberate our country from the Christian invaders and those who assist them, and I assure you that the holy war against them will not stop until the Islamic flag is raised,” he added.

It is not that Hollywood produced anything Islam-critical recently, quite the opposite. (CNSNews.com) – An Islamic advocacy group wants the entertainment industry to present a more positive image of Muslims and Arabs, who often play terrorists on television and in the movies — especially after 9/11, when Arab Muslims attacked the United States.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Los Angeles office (CAIR-LA) and FOX Television recently co-hosted a “Hollywood 101” workshop to introduce aspiring Muslim writers, directors and actors to the entertainment industry.

The event, held at FOX Studios in Century City, was intended to promote a positive change in Hollywood’s portrayal of Muslims and Arabs, CAIR-LA said.

In January, CAIR complained about the storyline on the Fox network’s popular television drama “24,” which depicted terrorists attacking the United States. CAIR said the Fox show would increase anti-Muslim prejudice in American society.

The recent “Hollywood 101” event — a result of CAIR’s discussions with Fox — included students and entry-level professionals who are hoping to build contacts and advance their careers in the entertainment industry.

Participants were given a tour of the studio lot, a presentation on FOX internships and a one-hour interactive seminar featuring five industry professionals, CAIR said in a news release.

CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said the best way to promote an “accurate and balanced portrayal of Muslims in America and around the world” is thought media outlets that shape popular culture.

It is frequently a bit of knee-jerk paranoia on the part of the defenders of Islamic jihad: that anyone who opposes them must be Jewish. This paranoia about the Jews is nourished by the Qur’an’s portrayal of them as crafty, untrustworthy — and accursed. And of course today jihadists would have us believe that the trouble between Muslims and non-Muslims is all because of Israel.

Although I am not in fact Jewish, I have been frequently labeled as such by Muslim spokesmen who evidently can’t conceive of a non-Jewish opponent of jihad ideology. So have Victor Davis Hanson and Paul Marshall: both have told me that they too have been labeled Jewish by Muslims after writing about Islamic jihad. One day perhaps such Muslim writers will awaken to the fact that the jihad ideology and the depredations of dhimmitude have won them a considerably larger spectrum of opponents than they care to imagine.

In the last few years, two episodes have hideously sullied this image. The first smirching was the conduct of the Dutch contingent in Bosnia, who in July 1995 abandoned the population of the U.N.-protected “safe haven” at Srebrenica and enabled the worst massacre of civilians on European soil since World War II. Dutch officers were photographed hoisting champagne glasses with the sadistic goons of Ratko Mladic’s militia before leaving the helpless Muslim population to a fate that anyone could have predicted.
Those of us who protested at this slaughter of Europe’s Muslims are also obliged to register outrage, I think, at the Dutch state’s latest betrayal. On Oct. 1, having leaked its intention in advance to the press, the Christian-Democrat administration of Jan Peter Balkenende announced that it would no longer guarantee the protection of Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

To give a brief back story, it will be remembered that Hirsi Ali, a refugee from genital mutilation, forced marriage, and civil war in her native Somalia, was a member of the Dutch parliament. She collaborated with Theo van Gogh on a film—Submission—that highlighted the maltreatment of Muslim immigrant women living in Holland. Van Gogh was murdered on an Amsterdam street in November 2004; a note pinned to his body with a knife proved to be a threat to make Hirsi Ali the next victim. Placed inside a protective bubble by the authorities, she was later evicted from her home after neighbors complained that she was endangering their safety and then subjected to a crude attempt to deprive her of her citizenship. Resolving not to stay where she was not wanted, Hirsi Ali moved to the United States, where she was offered a place by the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C., and where the Dutch government undertook to continue to provide her with security. This promise it no longer finds it convenient to keep. The ostensible reason for the climb-down is the cost, which involves a basic 2 million euros (not very much for a state), which can admittedly sometimes be higher if Hirsi Ali has to travel.

The Israelis and Palestinians have reached an agreement by which, in a final peace deal, the Temple Mount’s holy sites will be transferred to Jordanian custody, Al-Quds al-Arabi reported on Monday morning. Also, according to the London-based newspaper, it was agreed that Jordanian citizenship would be granted to 90,000 east Jerusalem residents.

According to the report, it is also likely that a supreme supervisory commission will be established, which will include representatives from the UN, Egypt, Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

When Israel and Jordan signed a peace deal in 1994, it was agreed that Israel would honor the special role of the Hashemite Kingdom over the Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem and in a final Israeli-Palestinian peace accord, Israel would give high importance to Jordan’s historic role over the holy sites.

Israel Radio reported that Jordan had recently set up a new fund for the renovation of Al Aksa Mosque and Dome of the Rock. The head of the fund even proposed that Jordan give Jordanian passports to some 90,000 east Jerusalem residents.

Meanwhile, Vice Premier Haim Ramon told Israel Radio that the question of who will have custody of Jerusalem’s holy sites must not be discussed at the moment. “We must decide that in that area there will be a special body which we will discuss in the future,” he said.

Also Monday, in an interview with Army Radio, Ramon said that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s coalition would support his plan to give the Palestinians several east Jerusalem neighborhoods in exchange for territory in the West Bank.

The Oxford Research Group calls for major changes in foreign policy and warns of the dangers of military action against Iran.

Iraq has become a training ground for violent jihadists and British and US forces should withdraw from the country immediately, the think-tank adds. The Prime Minister announced during a visit to British troops in Iraq last week that 1,000 of them would be back in the UK by Christmas. The Oxford Research Group’s report claims that the fight against international terrorism has failed and has instead played into the hands of al-Qa’eda.

The dismantling of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan in 2001-02 was of “direct value” to al-Qa’eda and the “extraordinary rendition” and detention of terror suspects is a “constant source of propaganda”, it adds. The report calls for a complete withdrawal from Iraq, a scaling down of military operations in Afghanistan and the ending of “extraordinary rendition” — sending suspects to another country to be interrogated —and detention without trial.

Paul Rogers, the report’s author, said: “Every aspect of the war on terror has been counterproductive in Iraq and Afghanistan, from the loss of civilian life through to mass detentions without trial. In short, it has been a disaster.”

“It is good to attract the attention of governments on the issue, to increase their level of awareness,” said Aydin Suer, the spokesman for Femyso, a confederation of Muslim youth groups from 22 European nations.

Participants said there was no easy solution to fighting Islamophobia.

“The problems are complex, the solutions themselves are complex,” said Suer. Muslims could not just blame media stereotypes for the problem, he added.

“We Muslims need to question ourselves,” he said.

Mohammed and the Heroin Jihad

Drug lord ‘waged jihad’,” from the Associated Press:

An Afghan drug lord accused of plotting to poison U.S. neighbourhoods with heroin was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison yesterday.

Haji Baz Mohammad, 51, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Denny Chin after he admitted violating drug laws from 1990 to 2005 by shipping heroin from Afghanistan and leading a drug ring that stretched into neighbouring Pakistan. He was the first Afghan heroin kingpin extradited from Afghanistan, authorities said.

Mohammad pleaded guilty in July to a charge of conspiring to violate drug laws. Without the plea, Mohammad could have faced up to life in prison.
Drug Enforcement Administration administrator Karen Tandy said in a news release that the sentencing demonstrated U.S. resolve “to destroy the hold opium lords have on Afghanistan.”
It would be great to see much more of that resolve.

She added: “This drug kingpin bragged that he waged jihad against Americans by poisoning them with his heroin. His attack was unconventional, and his massive drug profits funded the Taliban and other extremist organizations dedicated to destroying freedom and justice.”
Mohammad has been in custody since his 2005 arrest in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
