The chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Ole Danbolt Mjoes, addressed reporters after the awards were announced and tried to dismiss repeated questions asking whether the awards were a criticism — direct or indirect — of the Bush administration.

He said the committee was making an appeal to the entire world to unite against the threat of global warming.

“We would encourage all countries, including the big countries, to challenge all of them to think again and to say what can they do to conquer global warming,” he said. “The bigger the powers, the better that they come in front of this.”

He said the peace prize is only a message of encouragement, adding, “the Nobel committee has never given a kick in the leg to anyone.” [As Alfred Nobel spins in his grave. – ed.]

Soner Tufan, director of Radio Shema, a Christian station in Ankara, said that since the Malatya murders, at least three times a month men have come to the station’s door and threatened workers. In Antalya, Antalya Bible Church pastor Ramazan Arkan said that he is pursuing four court cases against a construction worker who began threatening church members in May, and one member of his flock was assaulted after a church service in August. In spite of the murder of Catholic Priest Andrea Santoro in February 2006, the ritual slayings in Malatya, and other incidents, Turkish President Abdullah Gul told a Council of Europe gathering in Strasbourg, France this week, “There are no attacks targeting Christians in Turkey.”

Hashemi Rafsanjani: Hitler Wanted to Rid World of Jews Because ‘They Were a Pain in the Neck’

Hashemi Rafsanjani, former Iranian president and current Chairman of the Assembly of Experts, said Friday that Hitler’s treatment of Jewish people in Europe was due in part to their being “a pain in the neck.”

Rafsanjani’s comments came during a sermon for “International Jerusalem Day” on Iranian TV.

Rafsanjani noted that Jews caused problems for European governments because they “had a lot of property” and “controlled an empire of propaganda.” He also said that the Nazis were successful in saving Europe from the evil of Zionism.

The former Iranian leader served as president from 1989 to 1997, and was succeeded by Mohammad Khatami. Rafsanjani ran for a third term in office in 2005, but lost to current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

French innkeeper fined over Muslim headscarf demand

STRASBOURG, France (Reuters) – A French court on Tuesday fined a guesthouse owner who refused to give a room to a woman wearing a Muslim headscarf unless she removed it in common areas.

Found guilty of religious discrimination, Yvette Truchelut, 54, was handed a suspended four month prison sentence and fined 1,000 euros ($1409). She will have to pay a total of 7,400 euros to the plaintiff and rights groups that brought the action.

Horia Demiati, who is of Moroccan origin, came to the guesthouse in eastern France in August 2006 with her mother, who was also wearing a headscarf, and other members of her family.

She chose to leave the guesthouse rather than comply with the guesthouse owner’s demand. Truchelut defended herself during hearings last week by citing her views on secularism.

France in 2004 passed a law banning religious garb, notably Muslim headscarves, from state schools. The move sparked a vigorous public debate on integrating immigrants and the right of religious expression.

Since then, President Nicolas Sarkozy has further stoked the debate with the creation of a new ministry for immigration and national identity which critics say risks reinforcing racial prejudice by twinning the two issues.

Israel, therefore, is a small link in the greater confrontation between radical Islam and the West. Accepting the Arabs’ terms for a Middle East settlement, or even going so far as “liberating” Palestine from Israeli rule, will not be the last stop in the radical Islamic journey being led by the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda, which share the vision of spreading Islam all over the world.
Indeed, for the West, Israel constitutes a dike against the great wave of radical Islam. The very same principle invoked for waging war against Israel – recovery of what was once Islamic territory – is being applied to Spain, the Balkans, Southern Russia, and India. European pressure on Israel to make political concessions that endanger its security will only bring closer the next stage of Islam’s offensive, this time aimed at the heart of Europe.

CONVICTED Bali nightclub bombers have feasted on kebabs with Indonesia’s anti-terrorism chief at an evening party held at his house.

The party, which brought together more than 20 Muslim hardliners and former terrorists who have shown “regret” for their actions, was the latest “soft” strategy in Indonesia’s anti-terror campaign to try and turn former militants into informers, or advocates of religious moderation.

“We approach the terrorists with a pure heart,” Brigadier General Surya Dharma, the head of Indonesia’s anti-terror unit and host of the party, told Associated Press.

“We are all Muslims. We make them our brothers, not our enemy.”

A few prisoners work publicly with authorities – one former Jemaah Islamiah leader Nasir Abbas sometimes briefs media alongside police.

Most remain behind the scenes, identifying a voice recording or meeting with fellow detainees to try and change their fundamentalist views.

Ali Imron, another former militant serving life for the Bali bombings, said an unnamed cleric had issued an edict calling for his death because of his close links with police.

“Everything has a risk, but I have chosen my path,” he told Associated Press.

“I am doing what is right.”

The fifth anniversary of the Bali bombings is October 12.

AXED: WORKER WHO OFFENDED MUSLIMS BY PUTTING PICTURE OF JESUS ON A WALL

AN AIRPORT suspended a Roman Catholic worker after a Muslim colleague protested about an image of Jesus pinned up on a staffroom wall.

Gareth Langmead, 40, was stunned to be sent home from Manchester airport after putting up the image of the Sacred Heart.

Bosses are said to have ordered the car parks supervisor to be escorted off the premises after the Muslim complained.

Mr Langmead was only reinstated three days later after an investigation found that his action was not intended to be “malicious or provocative”.

The row comes a year after BA check-in worker Nadia Eweida was suspended for wearing a cross at Heathrow. Yesterday friends and union representatives backed Mr Langmead.

One friend said: “He’s really gutted about this. “When he found the image in an office drawer, he thought it would be nice to pin it up. “In the end he was treated like a criminal and walked off the premises. He wasn’t trying to annoy anyone.

News that the head of Indonesia’s anti-terror unit, Surya Dharma, hosted 20 convicted terrorists and released Muslim radicals late last month emerged yesterday, with an Associated Press report and photographs from a journalist who attended the Muslim fast-breaking party.

Guests included Ali Imron and Mubarok, who received life sentences for their roles in the first Bali bombings, which took the lives of 202 people including 88 Australians.

A row has broken out in Italy over the wearing of the burka after the prefect of a city in the north-east announced he was permitting it, despite legislation outlawing any clothing that stops the wearer being recognised.

Vittorio Capocelli, the prefect of Treviso, near Venice, made his ruling after meeting immigrants’ representatives. He said women who sought to wear the burka for religious reasons were free to do so, but would have to reveal their features if asked to do so for the purposes of identification.

The burka covers the body from head to foot, with the exception of a small mesh at eye level.
The announcement by the prefect – the local representative of the interior ministry – also appeared to clear the way for the use of the equally controversial and more widely worn niqab, which leaves only the eyes visible.

Both garments, however, are apparently at odds with a 1975 law that bans the wearing of masks in public. It was originally introduced as part of a clampdown on terrorism and violent demonstrations.

In Treviso, moreover, the burka is the target of a specific ban. Three years ago, the city’s mayor, Giancarlo Gentilini of the anti-immigrant Northern League, said he had introduced the bylaw because the garment was “a mask that can be permitted at carnival time, but not throughout the year”.

In a front-page article in yesterday’s Corriere della Sera, the paper’s Egyptian-born deputy editor, Magdi Allam, attacked Mr Capocelli’s counter-initiative as symptomatic of an attitude that was “leading us straight to the suicide of our civilisation”. Were it endorsed at national level, he argued, Islamic women “could soon be going to school, taking jobs and going around freely, completely veiled”.

Mr Capocelli’s boss, Giuliano Amato, the interior minister in Italy’s centre-left government, and the prime minister, Romano Prodi, have spoken out against the burka. Mr Amato said last month that it “offended the dignity of women”.

A muslim organised terrorist training camps which were attended by members of the failed 21/7 plot to blow up the Tube network, a court heard today.

Mohammed Hamid was arrested at a stall in Oxford Street with Muktar Said Ibrahim, the self-styled “Emir” of the bombing plot, the jury was told.

Hamid told police he was “Osama bin London” adding, “I’ve got a bomb and I’m going to blow you all up.” He was among five defendants who went on trial today at Woolwich crown court on terrorist charges.

For the first time it can be revealed that the man described as Hamid’s “partner in terrorist conversions” has admitted soliciting murder in the training camps across the UK. A court order was lifted today to allow reporting of Atilla Ahmet’s guilty pleas last month at the Old Bailey to three counts of encouraging others to commit murder.

David Farrell, prosecuting, told the jury that Hamid had been involved in radicalising Muslim youths for two years.

The terrorist training took the form of camping and paint-balling trips in Sussex and the New Forest but had a serious intent, the court heard. They were designed to “foster within the participants that they were training for ‘Jihad’ against the ‘Kuffir’, or nonbelievers”.

The prosecutor added: “To put it another way, their statements and actions resulted in the encouragement, direct and indirect, of the commission of acts of terrorism.

“As you will hear, a number of young men who attended camps organised by Hamid were in fact involved in attempts to kill and seriously injure passengers on the London transport network on 21 July 2005.”

“This is the first time that the Empire State Building will be illuminated for Eid, and the lighting will become an annual event in the same tradition of the yearly lightings for Christmas and Hannukah,” according to a statement.

Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month, is expected to be celebrated in New York from Friday, depending on when the new moon is sighted, and the city’s tallest skyscraper will remain green until Sunday.

Built in the early 1930s, the 443-meter-tall (1,454-feet-tall) Empire State Building was first lit up with colored lighting in 1976, when red, white and blue lights were used to mark the American Bicentennial.

An estimated seven million Muslims live in the United States.

The problem with this is the unexamined assumption that Islam is exactly the same kind of thing as Judaism and Christianity, and must be welcomed into the United States with no examination of the ready-made societal alternative that it offers, and which some Muslims have made clear that they are determined ultimately not just to offer but to impose upon the West. In light of the dim view that some Muslims have of Western holidays, can we expect that in an Islamic New York, as some would like to see exist someday, the building will still be lit up for Christmas and Hanukkah?

Another unexamined assumption is that most Muslims abhor what happened on 9/11, and so this is no insult to the memory of those who died on that day. But I can’t help but think how nice it would have been to light up the World Trade Center towers also.

Conservative students have been accused of “hate speech” actually manufactured in their name by radical campus leftists, and at least one conservative is being harassed although she is not in any way associated with Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week.

THE NATIONAL “MUSLIM RIGHTS” HATE CAMPAIGN

Two prominent Arab/Muslim groups – the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) and Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) – have taken their efforts to censor IFAW or malign its founders nationwide. Notably absent from its literature is any attempt to disprove the conclusions of Robert Spencer, to refute the stories of Iranian women persecuted by extremist Islam, or demonstrate any factual error on the part of any IFAW speaker. Instead, they simply try to shut it down and paint its organizers as knuckle-dragging hatemongers.

Afghan mosques have ‘not normally’ been the scenes of violence

Two people have been killed and at least 10 injured in Afghanistan after gunmen opened fire in a mosque during prayers in a province bordering Kabul.

In a separate incident, also near the capital, a mullah was shot dead.

The mosque shooting took place in Wardak province which borders Kabul. A police chief said around 10 gunmen entered the building in Abad district.

They opened fire, killing two people and injuring others including a boy. Police are trying to find a motive.

But it does not appear to be any kind of tribal or local dispute, and the Taleban are suspected to be responsible.

In neighbouring Logar province on Tuesday night the Afghan interior ministry said a mullah on his way home from prayers was abducted and then shot a number of times.

He died of his injuries.

Attacks on religious figures, especially against those perceived to be pro-government, have increased over the past year.

But they are still unusual.

They are also a reminder that the insurgency is not just limited to bombings and fighting in the south and east of the country.

Assassinations and tactics designed to intimidate local people are being used across Afghanistan and are getting increasingly close to the capital.

Maldives Jihad: soldiers storm mosque after policeman kidnapped

More than 50 people have been arrested after hundreds of soldiers besieged a makeshift mosque on one of the small islands that make up the Maldives, it emerged yesterday.

Security forces stormed the Dhar-ul-Khair mosque on Himandhoo island, after a policeman had been captured by “70 masked men” carrying swords and iron rods. In the ensuing battle one soldier suffered head injuries and a policeman lost his hand.

The showdown comes just a week after tourists, including a British couple, were caught in a bomb blast on the capital island Male. Himandhoo is one of the 1,190 islands that make up the tourist paradise of the Maldives and lies 50 miles from Male.

Government officials say that they have become increasingly aware that a section of Himandhoo’s population, which numbers just 600, were becoming increasingly radicalised.

“Although the Maldives has practised a peaceful and tolerant Islam we knew of increasing extremism [in Himandhoo] because local resorts were no longer sending tourists there,” said Mohammed Shareef, a spokesman for the government.

There have been reports that groups of Maldivians had travelled to Pakistan where they had fallen under the spell of radical preachers. However, Mr Shareef said he saw no “foreign hand at work”.

We are not sure of these things yet. The device in Male was an amateur one. We think it is more local,” he said.

The islands are home to 330,000 Sunni Muslims who practise a liberal form of the religion, and authorities said the bomb attack was the first such incident.

Western officials told the Guardian that there were “credible reports of a mosque militia” working in the Maldives.

Political opponents say that President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who has been in power for three decades, has turned a blind eye to the increasing extremism in the Maldives. He has also been criticised for jailing opponents.

Hassan Saeed, the former attorney general who quit his post after he says his warnings about Islamic radicalism were ignored, said: “Although we have a history of moderation the population is not immune from events in Middle East and Iraq.”

Indonesia wants to be paid $US5-$US20 ($A5.50-$A22.20) per hectare not to destroy its remaining forests, the environment minister says, for the first time giving an actual figure that he wants the world’s rich countries to pay.

Participants from 189 countries are expected to gather in Bali for global climate talks at a UN-led summit in December.

They will hear a report on Reduced Emissions from Deforestation (RED) – a new scheme that aims to make emission cuts from forest areas eligible for global carbon trading.

But apart from carbon trading, Indonesia also wants big emitters such as the United States and the European Union to pay the country to preserve its pristine rainforests.

“We will ask for a compensation of $5-20 per hectare. It’s not fixed; it is open to negotiation,” Environment Minister Rachmat Witoelar told reporters after a cabinet meeting at the presidential palace.

With a total forest area of 91 million ha (225 million acres), Indonesia could receive as much as $US1.8 billion ($A2.01 billion) for preserving its forests under the proposal.

Indonesia will also negotiate a fixed price for other forms of biodiversity, including coral reefs, Witoelar added.

He later told Reuters that the figure matches the amount needed for preservation efforts and to create alternative employment for the local communities.

However, some critics say it is not clear how the funds would be supervised to ensure they are used properly.

Under the Kyoto Protocol’s first round, which runs through 2012, about 35 rich nations are obliged to cut emissions by 5 per cent below 1990 levels by 2008-12 to fight global warming.

The Bali meeting in December will initiate talks on clinching a new deal by 2009.

Kyoto focused on reducing emissions from industry and capturing greenhouse cases, but did not include a scheme to cut emissions from forestry or to protect existing forests, which could reduce global emissions by 20 per cent.

The sprawling archipelago is also home to 60 per cent of the world’s threatened tropical peatlands – dense tropical swamps that release big amounts of carbon dioxide when burnt or drained to plant crops such as palm oil.

Indonesia is one of the world’s top three carbon emitters when peat emissions are added in, according to a report sponsored by the World Bank and Britain’s development arm.

“So far we have not received anything for what we have done,” Witoelar said. “Now that there is a price tag for preservation, the amount of money we get will increase multifold.”
