THE family of Mohammed Atif Siddique, the Scottish student convicted this week of al-Qaeda terrorist offences, have come together to tell of their heartache and their anger at the way he has been treated.
They described how their son adopted a stricter Islamic way of life, a change that fractured their close relationship and ultimately led to his conviction.

But they insisted Atif – who faces at least ten years in prison – was not a terrorist and that his actions were similar to those of thousands of ordinary young Muslims seeking answers about al-Qaeda and the “war on terror”.

Practicing Jihad may lead to loss of life and wealth, such and adversity falls under the individual or specific category. However, abandoning Jihad will lead to loss of Deen and life at the level of the entire Ummah [Muslim community].”
He cites several Islamic scholars to justify jihad attacks against unbelievers even when those unbelievers are using Muslims as a shield, if “there is no other way of reaching, separating, and killing the Kuffar.”

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israeli police seized an explosive belt that was intended to be used in a Tel Aviv suicide bomb attack on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, a police spokesman said on Saturday.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said police raided an apartment in Israel’s commercial capital early on Saturday and arrested four people, including a suspected would-be suicide bomber and an explosive belt he was planning to use.

An army spokeswoman said Palestinian militants arrested during a raid in West Bank city of Nablus earlier this week had been planning the attack. Two militants and an Israeli soldier were killed during the raid.

The Hamas leader in al-Ein refugee camp gave the explosive belt to a Nablus resident who worked in Tel Aviv, she said. A news report said the belt was smuggled in parts and was assembled in the apartment.

The Pope has again risked provoking the wrath of the Islamic world, by criticising its treatment of Christians.

Benedict XVI attacked Muslim nations where Christians are either persecuted or given the status of second-class citizens under the Shariah Islamic law.

He also defended the rights of Muslims to convert to Christianity, an act which warrants the death penalty in many Islamic countries.

His comments came almost exactly a year after he provoked a wave of anger among Muslims by quoting a Byzantine emperor who linked Islam to violence.

Yesterday, near Rome, the 80-year-old pontiff made a speech in “defence of religious liberty”, which, he said “is a fundamental, irrepressible, inalienable and inviolable right”.

In a clear reference to Islam, he said: “The exercise of this freedom also includes the right to change religion, which should be guaranteed not only legally, but also in daily practice.”

Addressing the problem of Islamic extremism, he added: “Terrorism is a serious problem whose perpetrators often claim to act in God’s name and harbour an inexcusable contempt for human life.”

Last September, radical British Muslims said Pope Benedict should be executed for “insulting” the Prophet Mohammed.

His latest comments, however, come just days after one of the Church of England’s-senior bishops warned that Muslim leaders here must speak out in defence of the right to change faith.

The Bishop of Rochester, Michael Nazir-Ali, told Channel 4’s Dispatches programme of his fears for the safety of the estimated 3,000 Muslims who have converted to other faiths in this country.

A poll earlier this year of more than 1,000 young adult British Muslims found that 36 per cent believe those who convert to another faith should be punished by death.

Pope Benedict is particularly concerned about the persecution of Christians in Iraq since the invasion of 2003.

TONY Blair is already half-forgotten in Downing Street but Britain this week received one of his most contentious legacies in the form of an arms contract with Saudi Arabia, which could be worth more than $46billion.

The Saudi decision to buy 72 Eurofighter Typhoon warplanes and a barrage of related services from arms manufacturer BAE Systems followed Mr Blair’s decision in December to block a Serious Fraud Office investigation into bribes allegedly paid by BAE to members of the Saudi royal family.

The then prime minister ordered British prosecutors to drop the case on the grounds that it would be against the national interest, even though SFO officers believed they had enough evidence for a criminal conviction.

Mr Blair’s decision prompted criticism from the OECD, anti-corruption campaigners and US government investigators, who have launched their own inquiry into the bribes allegations.

It also brought claims of hypocrisy from the Kremlin, after British officials claimed they could not interfere with Britain’s “totally independent” justice system to stop British prosecutors pursuing diplomatically sensitive allegations that a former KGB agent had killed a Russian dissident in London.

When Mr Blair announced the BAE bribery investigation was being dropped, he denied it was in response to intense pressure from British industry and unions, which had worried that Saudi anger could undermine the Typhoon deal and threaten thousands of British jobs.

Government officials conceded privately the potential impact on British industry was a factor in their decision, but Mr Blair and then attorney-general Peter Goldsmith said they were stepping in for “national security” reasons because angering the Saudi Government could imperil Saudi support for the campaign against Islamic extremism.

The Saudis had threatened to cut off intelligence co-operation and that could put British lives at risk, Mr Blair said.

The British Government was quiet about the huge new arms export deal, with confirmation only coming this week from a Saudi announcement that the deal with Britain’s biggest arms-maker had been signed on September 11.

The initial contract was for pound stg. 4.43billion ($10billion) but related deals for munitions, repairs, training and other services are expected to lift it to pound stg. 20billion, making the export deal, by some accounts, Britain’s biggest.

Britain’s Conservative Party, which was in power during the initial Saudi arms deal, has offered little criticism of the stifling of the investigation, but the Liberal Democrats called the decision an outrage, a charge that party leader Menzies Campbell highlighted at his party’s annual conference yesterday.

“What kind of country is it where the Government halts a criminal investigation into corrupt arms sales to placate commercial interests?” Sir Menzies asked at the start of his keynote speech.

The US Department of Justice mounted inquiries into the matter in June, and a US law firm has launched a class action suit of BAE shareholders, claiming BAE bosses failed to carry out their duties by paying bribes to secure the original deal to sell Hawk and Tornado jets to Saudi Arabia in 1985.

The lawsuit alleges BAE gave more than $US2billion in bribes to Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan, a claim the prince and the firm deny.

U.S. commander: Iran supplying Taliban

A top American commander on Friday accused Iran of supplying powerful roadside bombs to militants in Afghanistan and said the U.S. would “act decisively” if the cross-border flow continues.

Heavy battles in the violence-plagued south, meanwhile, killed 75 Taliban and at least six civilians, and a suicide car bomb in the capital killed a French soldier and an Afghan bystander.

Adm. William Fallon, the head of U.S. Central Command, said Iran’s Revolutionary Guard is supplying roadside bomb parts for the type of sophisticated and deadly bombs found in Iraq known as explosively formed penetrators.

“The Iranians are clearly supplying some amount of lethal aid,” Fallon told The Associated Press during a trip to Afghanistan. “There is no doubt … that agents from Iran are involved in aiding the insurgency.”

Afghanistan has seen its heaviest fighting this year since the ouster of Taliban regime in 2001. More than 4,400 people have died in insurgency-related violence around the country, according to an Associated Press count based on official figures.

Friday’s bomb attack in western Kabul was directed against a convoy of French troops traveling in armored vehicles. It killed one soldier and an Afghan civilian and wounded many other Afghans, hospital and NATO officials said. The blast blew the windows out of a civilian bus and set at least one vehicle on fire.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy condemned the attack as “cowardly and odious.”

“More than ever, I remain determined to pursue the fight against terrorism,” he said.

Heavy fighting in the south, meanwhile, killed about 75 Taliban militants in the last 48 hours, the U.S.-led coalition said.

Students perform skits about the tenets of Islam belief’

The “Five Pillars” of Islam – charity, fasting, prayer, belief and pilgrimage – are being taught to public school students in Nyssa, Ore., under the guise of world history, the school has confirmed to WND, even though a parent raised a complaint about the same teachings a year ago.

The future of American Schools?

In a letter to parents following the concerns that were raised at that point, Supt. Don Grotting and other school officials told parents that the text called “Journey Across Time” features a chapter on “Islamic Civilizations.”

As part of that, “class activities have included guest speakers (including an American soldier serving in Iraq and a practicing Muslim woman who is an American citizen living in Mountain Home) who talked about geography, dress, climate, religion, economy and culture and student skits, in which students prepare and perform three- to five-minute skits about the tenets of Islam belief: charity, fasting, prayer, belief, and pilgrimage.”

Janine Weeks, the curriculum director at the school, this week told WND that the curriculum, and class activities, are continuing.

“We’ve not made any changes,” she said. “The content standards require that we present information about the rise of Islam in the context of world history.”

TEL AVIV – The United Nations has initiated a program to provide “job training” and “family assistance” purportedly to integrate into Palestinian society terrorists granted amnesty in July by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Many of the terrorists now slated for aid have boasted of violating their amnesty agreement by refusing to disarm and reportedly continuing to attack the Jewish state.

Israel has information some of the pardoned terrorists have been coordinating activities with the Lebanese Hezbollah terrorist organization.

In a gesture to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Olmert granted the official amnesty to 178 West Bank-based members of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Fatah’s declared military wing, which took responsibility along with the Islamic Jihad terror group for every suicide bombing in Israel the past two years.

3 years after Beslan slaughter, U.S. educators still unprepared

WASHINGTON – Three years after Muslim terrorists attacked a school in Beslan in North Ossetia-Alania within the Russian Federation resulting in 396 deaths and 437 injuries, terrorism and law enforcement experts say most U.S. schools have not prepared at all to deal with the possibility of such an assault.

More disturbingly, they say, such attacks are most definitely being prepared and rehearsed in Islamic terrorist camps around the world.

In videotapes captured in Afghanistan, al-Qaida terrorists practiced the takeover of a school – issuing commands in English, separating children into manageable groups and killing anyone who offered resistance. Some hostages were take to rooftops, dangled over the edge, then shot for the sake of cameras and onlookers.

In Iraq, the floor plans of several schools in Virginia, Texas and New Jersey were found in the possession of captured terrorists.

Meanwhile, in the U.S. law enforcement authorities have uncovered what appear to be probing missions by terrorists attempting to get jobs as school bus drivers and making inquiries about armed security personnel in schools.

Muslim gunman Sulejman Talovic was loaded for bear in February when he opened fire on shoppers in a Salt Lake City mall. He was armed with a shotgun, a .38 pistol and a backpack full of ammunition. He killed five and would have kept killing if an alert off-duty police officer hadn’t returned fire and helped stop him.

Suleiman was given a heroes funeral back in Kosovo, just like the London bombers, who had tens of thousands attend their funerals. We are being suicidally stupid.

In March, the FBI and Homeland Security Department distributed a bulletin to law enforcement across the country warning that Muslims with “ties to extremist groups” are signing up to be school bus drivers. They also noted “recent suspicious activity” by foreigners who either drive school buses or are licensed to drive them.

Sweden’s Chancellor of Justice has ruled that a cartoon drawn by a Swedish artist depicting the Prophet Mohammed as a dog, subsequently published in a local Swedish newspaper in August, does not constitute incitement to racial hatred.
Three Swedish Muslim organisations had requested the justice chancellor to press racial hatred charges against the Nerikes Allehanda newspaper and its editor, who wrote an article alongside the drawing defending press freedoms.
In a statement the chancellor said while many Muslims could interpret the cartoon as offensive, neither the drawing nor the article, could be proven to show contempt for any ethnic group.

The publication of the cartoon depicting the Prophet Mohammed as a dog-like sculpture decorating a traffic roundabout, or traffic circle, prompted official complaints from Egypt, Iran and Pakistan.

THE United Arab Emirates and Qatar are set to own nearly half of the London Stock Exchange, a source close to the matter said today.

The two Gulf states have agreed to buy a combined “48 per cent” of the prestigious London market in separate deals, the source said.

The news propels the Middle Eastern countries into the heart of European financial markets.

The state-linked Qatari Investment Authority said it had bought a 20 per cent slice of the LSE, which is Europe’s oldest stock exchange.

According to the source, the shares were sold by American investors – but not the US Nasdaq stock market.

Earlier, UAE group Borse Dubai agreed to buy a 28 per cent LSE holding from the US Nasdaq stock market as part of a deal to jointly take over Nordic operator OMX.

The LSE did not comment on the Nasdaq sale, but welcomed the purchase by Qatar.

“The board of the Exchange is very happy to welcome the QIA as a long term investor in the company,” the LSE said.

The US-based Nasdaq, which was the LSE’s biggest shareholder with a 31 per cent holding, said last month that it wanted to sell up after a failed hostile takeover attempt.

“Qatar Investment Authority today announces that its wholly owned subsidiary, Qatar Holding, has purchased a 20 per cent stake in the London Stock Exchange,” the QIA said in an official statement.

No financial details of the transaction were given and the QIA stressed that it had no takeover plans.

“Neither QIA nor Qatar Holding currently intends to make an offer for the LSE but reserves its position in the event that a third party announces a firm intention to make an offer,” the statement continued.

Qatar, like its neighbouring emirate, Dubai, is seeking to become the Middle East’s centre of global trading. Both emirates have an independent market regulator.

In Stockholm today, Nasdaq and Borse Dubai reached a complex agreement to jointly take over Nordic market operator OMX, with Borse Dubai taking 19.99 per cent of Nasdaq.

The groups said Borse Dubai, created less than two months ago, would follow through on its previously announced 230 kronor a share offer for OMX worth 2.94 billion euros ($4.81 billion).

The Nasdaq would then acquire all of Borse Dubai’s OMX shares.

Under the terms of the deal, Dubai will acquire almost one third of the LSE, while Nasdaq will become a strategic shareholder in the Dubai International Financial Exchange (DIFX).

The announcement ended intense speculation over the fate of OMX, with Nasdaq and Borse Dubai both courting the group in recent months.

The Qatar Investment Authority also announced today that it had bought 9.98 per cent of OMX, adding in a statement that the purchase was “a key step in the QIA’s ambitions to take supportive holdings in the European exchange infrastructure.”

OMX operates the stock markets of Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Reykjavik, Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius.

Carter: Iran No Threat to Israel Now

ATLANTA (AP) — Former President Jimmy Carter said Wednesday that it was almost inconceivable that Iran would “commit suicide” by launching missiles at Israel.

Speaking at Emory University, Carter, who brokered the 1979 Camp David peace accord between Israel and Egypt, said Israel’s superior military power and distance from Iran likely are enough to discourage an actual attack.

“Iran is quite distant from Israel,” said Carter, 83. “I think it would be almost inconceivable that Iran would commit suicide by launching one or two missiles of any kind against the nation of Israel.”

Iran’s deputy air force commander said Wednesday that Israel is within range of Iran’s medium-range missiles and bombers and that Tehran would strike back if Israel “makes a silly mistake.”

The White House said the comments almost sound geared toward provoking a fight and Israeli officials said they take the threats seriously.

Carter did not dismiss the idea that Iran might want to attack Israel, noting Iran’s refusal to suspend uranium enrichment production despite two United Nations resolutions imposing sanctions on the country. Tehran insists its nuclear program is aimed at producing energy for civilian use but the U.S., its European allies and many others fear the program’s real aim is to produce nuclear weapons.

“Obviously, we all hope we can do whatever we can to keep Iran from becoming a nuclear power,” Carter said.

Carter said unease between Israel and Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank is a far greater threat to Israel’s security than Iran. He criticized the Bush administration for not doing enough to broker peace in the region.

Bibi confirms attack on Syria

OPPOSITION leader Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed yesterday that Israel had carried out an air attack against a site deep inside Syria two weeks ago, breaking a 14-day Israeli silence on the strike.

“I was party to this matter, I must say, from the first minute and I gave it my backing,” Mr Netanyahu, known in his country as Bibi, said in an interview on Israeli television. “It is still too early to discuss this subject.”

Mr Netanyahu’s remark, the first confirmation of the strike by an Israeli leader, was condemned by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office, which has thus far declined to comment on Syrian reports of an attack.

Syria first reported an Israeli air incursion two weeks ago but offered few details.

According to reports, the attack was carried out against a site that Israeli intelligence believes is being equipped for nuclear development by North Korea.

The Israelis had reportedly tracked a ship bearing cargo from North Korea to a Syrian port and monitored the cargo’s transfer to the site, which was attacked a few days later, on September 6.

Neither the precise nature of the cargo nor the effect of the air attack has been revealed.

An American official said Israel had been monitoring the site, at al-Safir, for some time before the arrival of the North Korean shipment.

Jane’s Defence Weekly, a respected British journal, reported yesterday that an explosion in a Syrian military installation near Aleppo on July 26 killed 15 Syrian soldiers and dozens of Iranian weapons engineers.

According to Jane’s, a joint Syrian-Iranian project at the installation was under way to fit chemical warheads to short-range ballistic missiles.

Syria’s state news agency, SANA, said the blast was caused by high summer temperatures, which set off high-explosive materials at a weapons depot.

But Jane’s quoted Syrian defence sources as saying the explosion took place during a test to fit a Scud-C missile with a mustard-gas warhead.

“The blast dispersed chemical agents (including VX and Sarin nerve agents and mustard blister agents) across the storage facility and outside,” it reported.

The Palestinian source told Reuters that Hamas, which seized control of Gaza in June, had sought talks with Deputy defense Minister Matan Vilnai, offering to rein in rocket fire into Israel in return for an easing of Israeli border controls.

The survey was carried out by students in medicine in 12 wilayas (provinces) of the country between November 2006 and April 2007. From the questioned families, 47% have less than three children, 37% between four and seven and 17% have more than seven children. According to the survey, in Algiers the consanguinity rate is 29.5%, while the Oran province (400km west from Algiers) is the one with the lowest rate of consanguinity, at 18.5%. New York Rep. Peter King, a prominent House Republican, said there are “too many mosques in this country” in a recent interview with Politico.

“There are too many people sympathetic to radical Islam,” King said. “We should be looking at them more carefully and finding out how we can infiltrate them.”

King is the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee. And as an outspoken advocate of strong anti-terror measures, he has been unafraid to ruffle some feathers in his drive to protect the homeland.

Bali bomber now campaigns to stop terrorism

One of the Bali bombers responsible for the deaths of more than 200 people in 2002 is trying to help Indonesia’s police catch terrorists.

Ali Imron drove the van that blew Bali’s Sari Club apart in 2002 but he has always been the repentant bomber and since 2004 he has assisted Indonesia’s police with their hunt for terrorists.

Now, allowed out of prison for an exclusive interview with ABC Radio National’s Background Briefing program, Imron said he is making tapes to spread his anti-terrorism message.

Letting him speak out is just one part of Indonesia’s ground-breaking and controversial counter-terrorism strategy.

The flying pigs of Indonesia

Inspired by an extreme understanding of his faith, Imron played a critical role in the first Bali bombings that ripped apart the Sari Club and Paddy’s Bar on October 12, 2002, killing 88 Australians.

“After we assembled the Sari Club bomb and loaded it onto the van, I installed the detonator as well as the detonators for the vest bomb and the for the US consulate bomb,” he explained through an interpreter.

“I then taught the two suicide bombers how to trigger the explosions.

“I was the one who delivered the US consulate bomb to its destination and I ended up driving the van to the Sari club after discovering the suicide bombers couldn’t drive, handing over the vehicle at the last moment.”

Unlike his brothers, Imron escaped the death penalty because he showed remorse for his actions.

“I will continue to ask for forgiveness from the victims and their families, from anyone affected by violence in which I was involved,” he said.

“I will never stop asking for forgiveness.”

Out of jail

It would be inconceivable in Australia, but Indonesia has let Imron out of jail to tell his story to Background Briefing.

Indonesian police say he is now a potent force for counter-terrorism, and they want Australia to know how Imron is working to stop further violence.

In a Jakarta hotel room, flanked by a prison guard, Imron was calm and quietly focused as he explained his new form of jihad.

“I help police because I know what the terrorists think,” he said.

“I know how they will try to get their weapons and explosives. I know what kind of place they will target for what kind of action and I know how they would carry that out.

“I know how to hide from the police on the run, how the terrorists recruit new members and who is most vulnerable to the radical message.

“I am giving all this information to police so I can stop violence and terrorism.”

It might be cold comfort for his victims and their families, but now Imron is revealing trade secrets of terror group Jemaah Islamiah.

Further, he claims to have considerable influence outside prison.

He says students at his family’s Islamic boarding school would become suicide bombers if he asked them to. Instead, Imron sends them the opposite message.

“Since I was jailed in Bali, I’ve been writing a book and other materials about my ideas,” he said.

“Also every time my family or friends visit me, or I send a message to others outside prison, I always say it was a mistake to carry out the bombings. It was the wrong kind of jihad.”

Part of Imron’s new type of jihad, or spiritual struggle in God’s name, is sending cassettes to his family’s east Java school. But he has some competition: his unrepentant brother and fellow bomber, Ali Ghufron, who is known as Mukhlas.

Mukhlas is on death row and is also hard at work making cassettes for the al-Islam school, but urging the students to become terrorists.

Imron says it is a battle for influence.

“Mukhlas and I both send letters and cassettes to al-Islam,” he said.

“It’s a tough thing to deal with personally and tough for the teachers there because I ask the students to follow my example while Mukhlas calls them to carry out violent jihad.

“We will have to wait and see who wins this battle for influence.”

Imron says he has had some success in dissuading people from violent forms of jihad.

“Yes, there are success stories, thank God,” he said.

“None of my students or former students are involved in terrorism and none of my close friends are involved. But there’s more to do and I’ll keep working to stop terrorism.”
