Church Fights to Stay Open in Turkey

* A remnant of an Armenian church in Turkey. Under the Islamic system, no new churches must be built and existing ones must fall into disrepair.

A legally recognized church in Turkey is fighting to stay open after police last week delivered a letter from the government stating that it will be closed within days.

The letter said Batikent Protestant Church in the capital city Ankara would be closed because it is meeting in a building that is not approved as a place of worship, according to International Christian Concern on Tuesday.

But the church argues that it had won a court case last year against the local government over zoning code violations, and was essentially fighting a legal battle over a case it had already won.

“It is very obvious that what is happening to our church is a pre-meditated, continuous and jointly orchestrated direct attack against the Church as a whole in Turkey by the right-wing Islamic government (AK Party) that is currently in control in Turkey,” said the church’s founding pastor Daniel Wickwire, according to ICC.

Wickwire, who has been a missionary pastor in Ankara for the past 23 years, and his lawyers opened a court case to challenge the police notice on June 4. He accused the Yenimahalle Municipal Government and the national Ministry of the Interior of trying to shut down the church.

The owner of a hair salon has been ordered to pay £4,000 compensation to a Muslim stylist who was turned down for a job because she wears a headscarf.

Bushra Noah accused Sarah Desrosiers of religious discrimination when she failed to offer her a job at her Wedge salon in King’s Cross, central London.

An employment tribunal panel dismissed the 19-year-old’s claim but upheld her complaint of indirect discrimination.

Ms Desrosiers said she needed stylists to showcase alternative hairstyles.

During the hearing Ms Noah, who lives in Acton, west London, told the tribunal that she was “devastated” that she was not offered the job of assistant stylist “due to my headscarf”.

Ms Desrosiers, 32, told the panel that Ms Noah lived too far away, but was persuaded to give her an interview in May last year.

When the applicant arrived for the interview she claimed the Canadian salon owner was clearly shocked by the fact she wore a headscarf.

Please present me with similar statements by Jews — let alone Baha’i (that’s the correct spelling btw).

(And an aside to Mr. Farber, assuming he really said what you claim he did — should the unlikely day dawn when Baha’i fly stolen planes into buildings and incinerate 3000 people alive, or mutilate the genitals of millions of women, or slice up their little boys as part of “religious festivals”, or take over a school and rape pre-pubescent girls in front of their classmates, then shoot them in the back as they try to run away, then plenty of us will be more than willing to hate them for it, and we won’t be silenced either, especially not by an out of touch, would-be bully like Mr. Farber.)

KAMPUNG PULAU MELAKA, Malaysia (Reuters) – A leader of Malaysia’s Islamist party, which made surprising gains in March elections, wants its secular allies to apply strict sharia law, which include amputations and stonings for Muslims.

The hardline Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS) has enacted such laws in its Kelantan stronghold to punish rapists and adulterers with stoning to death, while thieves would lose their limbs.

However, the country’s Federal government has barred PAS from enforcing the laws.

But analysts have said it would be tough for PAS to broaden its appeal due to its advocacy of the punishments called for by strict Muslim religious law, known as sharia or hudud, which scare off non-Muslims who see the party as a fundamentalist clique.

“Islam is a moderate, soft religion,” PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat told Reuters late last week in the northeastern state of Kelantan, the party’s stronghold for the past 18 years.

The violence started around 22:00 (20:00 GMT) after the 22-year-old man was gunned down in Vitry-le-Francois. A suspect was arrested overnight.

The leader of the religious Adhaalath party scholars’ council has said he advocates the death penalty for those who convert from Islam to another religion, as well as amputation of hands for certain types of theft.

In an interview with Minivan News, Sheikh Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari emphasised the need for “advice” and correct legal procedures before the death penalty is implemented, but said Shari’ah law ultimately requires the killing of those who leave Islam.

Majeed was also a member of the government’s Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs until he resigned at the start of May under the Civil Service Act, which forbids civil servants to engage in political activity.

His statement follows a media furore over a book co-authored by presidential candidate Dr Hassan Saeed, Freedom Of Religion, Apostasy And Islam, which Umar Naseer of the Islamic Democratic Party has condemned as favouring freedom of religion.

Apostates – those who leave the Islamic religion – “must not be punished by the public,” Majeed said, and must initially be offered “advice, and the opportunity to come back to Islam again”.

U.N. Rapporteur Turns to Usual Suspects on “Islamophobia”

If one were to list the challenges and crises facing the United Nations, bigotry here in America wouldn’t crack the top 100. The junta in Burma won’t let international aid in to help its citizens in the wake of a devastating typhoon. Civilians continue to face massacres in Darfur. China harshly suppresses protests in Tibet and the diplomatic standoff with Iran over its nuclear program rages. In short, life and death are daily struggles throughout the world.

Yet a volunteer for the UN Commission on Human Rights met last month in southern California with a group of Islamists, well known for their habit of crying wolf about hate crimes, while at the same time offering more than a winking endorsement for acts of terrorism and broad support for terrorist groups.

Doudou Diène, a UN “special rapporteur,” attended a meeting May 28 in Anaheim, organized by the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California, to hear about what the Council calls “Islamophobia,” racism and discrimination against Muslims, the Council announced in a statement. The UN says special rapporteurs “are unpaid and serve in a personal capacity, [who] receive their mandates from the UN Commission on Human Rights.”

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Leaders of Toledo’s 6,000-strong Islamic community said convictions of three Ohio men of Middle Eastern descent on federal terrorism charges shouldn’t reflect on Muslims who have been rooted here for generations.

A federal jury yesterday found 45-year-old Marwan El-Hindi, 28-year-old Mohammad Amawi, and 26-year-old Wassim Mazloum guilty of plotting attacks against U.S. troops overseas.

Some in Toledo’s Muslim community closely monitored the 2 1/2 month trial in U.S. District Court.

Seventy-nine-year-old John Shousher says the men should pay the price if they intended to harm the nation. But he and other Muslims hoped the public would be able to separate the actions of a few Muslims from the entire religion and culture.

ONE of the latest fashion items to hit Australia – a scarf resembling a keffiyeh – has caused a stir with many claiming it defused the apparel’s meaning as a pro-Palestinian jihad symbol.

However, Jewish community leaders have said the reaction is unwarranted.

Resembling a traditional Arab headdress, the keffiyeh hangs around the neck and is black and white or red and white and has become one of fashion’s latest accessories.

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Vic Alhadeff told The AJN “it’s a non-issue”.

“Most people would be unaware of its connotation for Muslims and Jews, and it’s therefore, clearly being worn as a fashion item. If people choose to wear one for whatever reason, that is their choice.”

Roger David, a Jewish-owned clothing label, was criticised by an irate AJN reader, Steven Rose, for “ignoring such community standards and societal norms, by blatantly advertising these keffiyehs – symbols of the Arab terrorist movements – prominently on the Roger David website”.

The scarf in question appears on a male model on the website and is the central image under the link to Stray.

When contacted by The AJN, a representative from Roger David refused to comment, and said only that he wasn’t aware the scarves were being sold.
