An update on this story: State is allowing the Islamic Saudi Academy to continue operating because school officials have assured them that they will — in effect — stop teaching things they have been teaching as basic tenets of Islam. And State bought it. Of course.

You know the Islamic Saudi Academy: the one that teaches mainstream Islamic concepts such as the killing of apostates and adulterers. Patrick Poole reports in “What Virginia’s Islamic Academy Doesn’t Want You to Know” at Pajamas Media, June 13:

The Bush administration considers the Saudi government to be one of our allies in the War on Terror, and that support extends to the Islamic Saudi Academy as well. Cinnamon Stillwell recently noted an article in the Mount Vernon Gazette that reported 22 soldiers from Ft. Belvoir had recently graduated from the Islamic Saudi Academy’s “Arabic as a Second Language” program. This means that the school is not only being funded by the Saudi government, but also our own government. Deputy Assistant Secretary of The Army Dr. Lynn Heirakuji and the U.S. Army’s Deputy Assistant for Foreign Languages Erol Smith attended the graduation ceremonies.No doubt we’re all grateful that our government is so adept at identifying who our enemies really are.

Taliban prisoners freed in Afghan prison suicide attack: officials

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AFP) — Taliban rebels blasted into a prison using a suicide car bomb and guns late Friday, freeing as many as hundreds of militant prisoners and killing at least two guards, officials said.
The brazen attack under cover of darkness ripped through the front entrance of the main jail in the insurgency-hit southern city of Kandahar, Justice Minister Sarwar Danish told AFP.
The raid is a blow to President Hamid Karzai, coming one day after world donors pledged 20 billion dollars to rebuild Afghanistan at a conference in Paris but also called on him to strengthen the rule of law.
“A suicide attacker drove his way into the main gate of the prison, it was very strong and destroyed the gate and two sides of the surrounding wall,” Danish told AFP.
He said it was followed by an “armed attack inside the prison.”

This, of course, is nothing new: it is just what his campaign has been saying for quite some time. And that’s why the mounting evidence that he was indeed known as a Muslim in his youth in Indonesia matters — not because of some paranoid fantasy that Obama is a Manchurian candidate, a secret Muslim who will tell Americans on January 20, 2009, “Surprise! I’m imposing Sharia!” (I have never credited any of that nonsense) — but because it raises questions about his honesty. If he was registered as a Muslim in school and went to Qur’an class (which he refers to doing in one of his books), why not admit that he was at least nominally a Muslim as a child? His conversion to Christianity, and his now-notorious church, are well known. Perhaps he has calculated that admitting this would cost him more in political capital than he is able or willing to pay, but — so does, or so should, his lack of honesty about this matter.

California: Muslim polygamist guilty of torturing 2 wives, 19 children

Here is one of the 50,000 to 100,000 Muslim polygamists in the U.S. Of course, there are abusive husbands in all cultures, but only in an Islamic context is there the idea that beating one’s wife has divine sanction (Qur’an 4:34). Might not that create a culture, an atmosphere in which this kind of thing is more likely to happen?

After being convicted on 24 charges involving torture, abuse and false imprisonment, Mansa Musa Muhummed, seated, looks up at his defense attorney as he is being handcuffed. When the verdicts were read in court, Muhummed had shook his head from left to right.

MURRIETA, Calif. — A self-described polygamist was convicted Wednesday of charges that he starved, tortured and abused his two wives and many of his 19 children and stepchildren.
A Riverside County Superior Court jury found Mansa Musa Muhummed guilty on 25 counts, including torturing seven of the children, abusing 12 of them and falsely imprisoning the wives. He faces seven life sentences.

Muhummed, 55, shook his head as the verdict was read, prosecutor Julie Baldwin said.

His wives and children were not present in court but they plan to attend his sentencing, which is scheduled for August 1, she said.

Muhummed, whose birth name was Richard Boddie, told authorities that his Muslim faith gave him the right to take multiple wives. He was arrested in 1999 after one of his wives, Laura Cowan, managed to slip a 13-page letter to a postal service worker describing the abuse….

Once the case went to trial, a string of his children and stepchildren, now adults, also took the stand, telling the jury that they had been beaten, starved, strung up by their feet and forced to eat vomit and feces.

Muhummed testified in his own defense. On the stand, in sometimes tearful testimony he denied the charges and blamed one of his wives for the alleged abuse.

He said that his children and stepchildren ate three regular meals a day except during the holy month of Ramadan, when the older children ate two meals — one before dawn and one after sunset.

Doctors said the children were extremely malnourished. A 19-year-old daughter was 4-foot-1 and weighed 56 pounds.

Imagine! The Associated Press reports that there are some “troubling passages” in texts at Va. school.

That would be the notorious Islamic Saudi Academy, and those “troubling passages” say things like “kill the infidels and steal their property.”

Troubling.

McLEAN, Va. (AP) — Textbooks at a private Islamic school in northern Virginia teach students that it is permissible for Muslims to kill adulterers and converts from Islam, according to a federal investigation released Wednesday.

Other passages in the school’s textbooks state that “the Jews conspired against Islam and its people” and that Muslims are permitted to take the lives and property of those deemed “polytheists.”

* Trouble is that this is not some ‘extremist’ or ‘fundamentalist Wahabist’ stuff, its main-stream Islam.

The passages were found in selected textbooks used during the 2007-08 school year by the Islamic Saudi Academy, which teaches 900 students in grades K-12 at two campuses in Alexandria and Fairfax and receives much of its funding from the Saudi government.

The academy has come under scrutiny from critics who allege that it fosters an intolerant brand of Islam similar to that taught in the conservative Saudi kingdom. In the review, the panel recommended that the school make all of its textbooks available to the State Department so changes can be made before the next school year.

This indoctrination of children has been going on at the Islamic Saudi Academy for years, and the AP is only now noticing it.

Guess who met with Doudou Diène, United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, in Miami on June 2 at a hearing on Islamophobia and anti-Muslim discrimination.

That’s right: none other than ex-CAIR operative Ahmed Bedier, whose unsavory statements and associations I detailed here recently.

Bedier, according to his own press release on the meeting (thanks to Paul), “relayed how Islamophobia and anti-Muslim rhetoric by officials and pundits are contributing to hate crimes against Muslims across Florida.”

I wonder if Ahmed Bedier could provide even one scrap of evidence for that assertion. Can he provide evidence for an increase of hate crimes against Muslims in Florida? Can he show any causal link between statements by any official or pundit, and any of those hate crimes?

Meanwhile, does he support the attempts to restrict free speech as a way to combat “Islamophobia”?

Spurious charges of “Islamophobia,” and false claims that hate crimes are being committed because of it, are being used to advance an anti-free speech agenda. Americans need to be aware of what’s happening, and resist it.

ANKARA–Turkey’s top court has ruled that Islamic headscarves violate secularism and cannot be allowed at universities, deepening a divide between the country’s Islamic-oriented government and secular institutions.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government had tried to allow hijabs at universities as a “matter of personal and religious freedom.”

But yesterday’s Constitutional Court verdict said constitutional amendments that were passed by parliament in February went against secularism.

The headscarf issue is an explosive one in Turkey, where the government is locked in a power struggle with secular groups that have support from the military and other state institutions.

The verdict is likely to bode ill for the government. Turkey’s chief prosecutor is seeking to disband the ruling party on grounds that it is “the focal point of anti-secular activities” in a separate case at the Constitutional Court.

The prosecutor – who has also asked that Erdogan and other party officials be banned from politics for five years – has cited attempts to allow headscarves at universities as a case in point.

That is the question that should be asked of all Muslims who have killed or exhorted others to violence over these cartoons — not of the cartoonists or any Western government.

Who is responsible for the June 2 suicide attack against the Danish Embassy in Pakistan that killed six people? An increasing number would say that the Danes themselves are responsible, or at least the Danish government, for its obstinate attachment to that irritating little principle of free speech. On Wednesday, June 4, a web posting claiming to be from Al-Qaeda said that the bombing was fulfillment of Osama bin Laden’s vow to exact revenge for the cartoons of the Muslim prophet Muhammad that ran in a Danish newspaper in 2005. Fauzia Mufti Abbas, Pakistan’s ambassador to Denmark addressed a rhetorical question to the people of Denmark: “I’d like to know if your newspaper is satisfied with what it has done and what it has unleashed?”

Some prominent legal scholars say the United States should reconsider its position on hate speech.

“It is not clear to me that the Europeans are mistaken,” Jeremy Waldron, a legal philosopher, wrote in The New York Review of Books last month, “when they say that a liberal democracy must take affirmative responsibility for protecting the atmosphere of mutual respect against certain forms of vicious attack.”

Professor Waldron was reviewing “Freedom for the Thought That We Hate: A Biography of the First Amendment” by Anthony Lewis, the former New York Times columnist. Mr. Lewis has been critical of attempts to use the law to limit hate speech.

But even Mr. Lewis, a liberal, wrote in his book that he was inclined to relax some of the most stringent First Amendment protections “in an age when words have inspired acts of mass murder and terrorism.” In particular, he called for a re-examination of the Supreme Court’s insistence that there is only one justification for making incitement a criminal offense: the likelihood of imminent violence.

The 10-year-old was married off to a man in his 30s who abused her. She made her way to a courthouse, found a lawyer and broke free.

The little girl was waist-high, so small that the lawyers, clerks and judges hurrying through the courthouse almost missed her.

As lunchtime arrived and the crowds of noisy men and women cleared away, a curious judge asked her what she was doing sitting alone on a bench.

“I came to get a divorce,” 10-year-old Nujood Ali told the jurist.

Her impoverished parents had married her off to a man more than three times her age, who beat her and forced her to have sex, she explained. When she told her father and mother that she wanted out of the marriage, they refused to help. So an aunt provided her with bus money to travel to court and seek a divorce.

Within days of that April 2 encounter, Nujood’s tale and the plight of child brides in Yemen made international headlines. And thanks to the efforts of human rights lawyer Shada Nasser, who took up her cause, the girl at the center of the story has begun to overcome her trauma and dream of a better life.

Yemeni law sets the age of consent at 15. But tribal customs and interpretations of Islam often trump the law in this country of 23 million. A 2006 study conducted by Sana University reported that 52% of girls were married by 18.

Publicity surrounding Nujood’s case prompted calls to raise the legal age for marriage to 18 for both men and women. Yemen’s conservative lawmakers refused to take up the issue. But the case sparked public discussion and newspaper headlines. Several more child brides came forward, including a girl who sought a divorce last week in the southern city of Ibb.

“This case opened the door,” Nasser says.

Nujood says that at first, she felt ashamed about what had happened to her. “But I passed through that,” she says, eyes narrowing beneath her black head scarf.

“All I want now is to finish my education,” she adds, her mouth curling into a smile. “I want to be a lawyer.”

But of course Yusuf has no problem with the death penalty. Yusuf has no problem with hand, arm and leg chopping, as long as its done under shariah. Public flogging, the stoning of women? Not a problem: you will never hear a sound criticising any aspect of ‘divine Islamic law’- what bothers Yusuf is the possible death penalty for the fanatical, brainwashed lunatics from the Bali bombings, and he would like your support in preventing their execution. Because they were only following their ‘religion’, right Yusuf?

Yusuf’s jihad by the pen:

Yusuf never fails to rave on about ‘Abu Ghraib’ (as if butt-pyramids could somehow be equated with the terror, the mass-murder and the beheadings committed by the Islamists) and yes: ‘Gitmo- torture’ must be brought into it again and again (oh the injustice!)

Mr Rudd said a Labor government would only use such diplomacy against the death penalty in support of Australian citizens facing execution abroad.

So a Labor government will try to convince other countries not to adopt the Rule of Law – treating all equally under the law – but only when it comes to executing Aussies. If you smuggle drugs into Bali, a Labor government will argue to Balinese authorities that you shouldn’t get the same punishment as other convicted drug smugglers just because you hold an Australian passport.

There is a difference between Mass-murdering terrorists and kids who get caught carrying drugs, Yusuf. But for you the Bali bombers are ‘holy warriors’, are they not Yusuf? Which  makes you a co-conspirator to Islamic terror. Just like your jihadi-posters on the ‘Unhinged’ website who try to whitewash the Beslan atrocity, where Islamic terrorists killed 300 children in the name of your ‘religion’.

No Yusuf, there is no conspiracy to make the world Islamic, because YOU say so. And because you say so, we will just ignore the daily atrocities in more than 30  theaters of jihad warfare around the world. Because Irfan Yusuf’s taqiyya with its 18 secret herbs and spices is so tasty it makes the awful Islamic doctrine of perpetual warfare against unbelievers and Jew-hatred in the Koran and the sunnah go away?
