Universities to open Islamic centres

Two of the country’s top universities have announced plans to create new research centres for Islamic studies.

The move by Edinburgh University and Cambridge University is funded by a £16 million endowment from Prince Alwaleed bin Albdulaziz Alsaud, chairman of the philanthropic organisation Kingdom Foundation.
The new centres will aim to carry out research and public engagements designed to increase understanding between the Muslim world and the West.

In 2002, Al-Walid donated $500,000 to the George Herbert Walker Bush Scholarship Fund, established by the Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, to honor former President George H. W. Bush.

In December 2005, Al-Waleed donated $20 million each to Harvard University and Georgetown University to finance Islamic studies. The gift to Georgetown, which renamed the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding in his honor, was the university’s second-largest donation in history, and the gift to Harvard was among its 25 largest.

So, before you start criticising English Universities start by examining what your own are doing!

In 2006, the Al-Walid donated $10 million to the Weill Medical College of Cornell University establishing the HRH Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud Institute for Computational Biomedicine (ICB). This institute studies complex genomic and cellular systems as they relate to medicine and biology by using mathematical models, physics and high-speed computing.

Oh, and also: in late 2007, Al-Waleed donated $1.48 million to the Islamic Society of North America.

Oh, and by the way of absolutely nothing other thatn that the UK is alone and sinful, just remember this: in 2002, Al-Walid donated $500,000 to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Holy Land Foundation

In July 2005, he donated $20 million to the Louvre Museum, the largest gift ever to the world’s largest museum. It will help to fund the construction of a wing for the Louvre’s vast collection of Islamic art. The wing will consist of a freeform, glassy structure that will bring a modern touch to a neoclassical courtyard. The design for the new wing would involve covering much of the Louvre’s Cour Visconti, a neo-Classical courtyard, with a contemporary sail-like roof made up of small glass disks. Officials put the total cost of the wing, by the architects Mario Bellini and Rudy Ricciotti, at $67 million and predicted it would open in 2009.

Sami al-Haj, a Sudanese citizen, was whisked from his hospital bed in a convoy escorted by police cars with flashing lights and wailing sirens to an outdoor event in his neighborhood organized by his family. His speech was broadcast live on Sudanese television.

“After 2,340 days spent in the most heinous prison mankind has ever known, we are honored to be here. Thank you, and thank all those defended us and of our right in freedom,” he told the cheering crowd.

Al-Haj was the only journalist from a major international news organization held at Guantanamo and many of his supporters saw his detention as punishment for an Arabic television channel whose broadcasts angered U.S. officials.

The U.S. military charged he was a courier for a militant Muslim organization, an allegation his lawyers denied.

Al-Haj said he believed he was arrested because of U.S. hostility toward Al-Jazeera and because the media was reporting on U.S. rights violations in Afghanistan.

“I was subjected to 130 (interrogation) sessions, more than 35 about Al-Jazeera, and they wanted me to be a spy against Al-Jazeera,” he said. He said that as a faithful Muslim, he rejected the offer.

Italy: Muslim official backs president in Turin book fair spat

Turin, 6 May (AKI) – Italian president Giorgio Napolitano is right to inaugurate the Turin book fair on Thursday to affirm Israel’s right to exist, according to a senior official from one of Italy’s Muslim groups.

“I express my complete solidarity with Italy’s president of the republic, Giorgio Napolitano, on behalf of COREIS, and also with the Turin book fair’s director, Ernesto Ferrero,” Italian Islamic religious community vice-president Yahya Pallavicini told Adnkronos International (AKI).

COREIS mainly represents Italian converts to Islam.

 “Apart from his dubious opinions, he shows the will to attack institutions that is typical of the Muslim Brotherhood, and to lack a sense of the state or respect for the president of the republic.”

Pallavicini will also attend the opening on Thursday of the Turin book fair “as a citizen who does not share the opinions of Ramadan and the stances taken by the Muslim Brotherhood.”

“Ramadan, like every other member of the Muslim Brotherhood harbours rancour not only towards Arab regimes, but also towards democratic governments,” said Pallavicini.

Somali opposition accuses France of ‘kidnapping’ pirates

 Main opposition group in Somali says ‘France lacks the legal mandate’ to charge the six pirates who have held Le Ponant and its crew hostage.

NAIROBI – Somali’s main opposition group said Monday that France lacks the legal mandate to charge six pirates with hostage-taking and accused the European power of “kidnapping” them.

“France and Somalia do not have an extradition treaty and French laws are not applicable to crimes committed outside France,” said Hussein Mohamed Aidid, chairman of the Eritrea-based Alliance for the Reliberation of Somalia (ARS).

“If the pirates were extradited illegally, like it happened in this case, then they were kidnapped by the French special forces. If the pirates acted against the law, the French should not have done the same.

“The pirates are criminals, but they should be punished by courts with the legal mandate to do so,” Aidid, Somalia’s former deputy prime minister, told AFP.

In April, French special forces arrested the pirates for kidnapping the French luxury yacht Le Ponant, freeing the boat and its 30-member crew on 11 April.

Despite the lack of any formal extradition accord, French prosecutors charged them in Paris with “abduction and detention of hostages with a view to obtaining a ransom,” as well as “theft” and “receiving stolen goods”.

The pirates are still in French detention.

Last week, France and the United States presented a text before the UN Security Council seeking to authorise states to send warships into Somalia’s territorial waters to combat piracy.

The coastal waters off Somalia – which has not had an effective central government for more than 17 years and is plagued by insecurity – are considered among the most dangerous in the world.

More than 25 ships were seized in Somali coastal waters in 2007 despite US navy patrols, according to the International Maritime Bureau.

Italian President defends Israel book fair in Italy

Italy’s president on Monday defended his decision to open a book fair in Turin honoring Israeli writers, despite calls for a boycott by some Arab and Italian intellectuals angered by the event.

President Giorgio Napolitano’s planned appearance at Thursday’s inauguration of the fair is in line with his participation in many cultural events, his office said in a statement. [….]

Italy’s presidency was reacting mainly to the Italian media quoting Muslim scholar Tariq Ramadan as saying Monday that Napolitano’s plan to open the Turin fair is a mistake.

“His presence shows that this is a political event, and not only a cultural event,” the ANSA news agency quoted Ramadan as saying at a news conference in Turin.

Cleric calls for ban of infidel sect

RADICAL Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Bashir has called for the ban of an “infidel” Islamic sect as debate raged in the world’s most populous Muslim country over religious freedom and tolerance.

Mr Bashir said the government must swiftly disband the minority Ahmadiyah branch of Islam to protect mainstream Indonesian Muslims and prevent violent sectarian unrest.

“Ahmadiyah is an infidel organisation using the name of Islam, which aims to disrupt Islam,” he told a press conference called to urge the government to act on the recommendation of an inter-departmental team to outlaw the sect.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim community emphasizes the nonviolent aspects of jihad or religious “effort.” Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835–1908), the South Asian Muslim scholar who founded the movement, argued that the Quran only authorized jihad as defensive military action in certain contexts and otherwise encouraged peaceful initiatives in support of Islam. Ghulam Ahmad also claimed, as the spiritual manifestation of the Messiah and Mahdi, to usher in a new era in which nonviolent activities alone defined jihad. These arguments have not persuaded most Muslims, but the Ahmadiyya Muslim community continues to stress jihad of the pen, that is, efforts to promote and defend Islam in various media. Many take up the pen, but few are granted the spirit to conduct the jihad in the most acceptable manner . . . It is the Jamaat Ahmadiyya only which has not stopped this great struggle . . . It has become the only vehicle to usher in the revival of Islam through its peaceful, yet determined intellectual process which was initiated a century ago by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, the Promised Messiah and Mahdi in Islam.¹

“We urge the Indonesian government to immediately and officially ban and dissolve Ahmadiyah. We warn the government that any delay to do so will potentially create horizontal conflicts,” he said.

He explained that by “horizontal conflicts” he meant sectarian violence between mainstream Indonesian Muslims and Ahmadis, who number only about 200,000 in Indonesia.

Without a ban, people might take matters into their own hands, he said, a warning made all the more resonant after a mob attacked and razed an Ahmadiyah mosque last week.

“We never recommend any attacks or destruction but Muslims will fight each other if the government doesn’t want to ban Ahmadiyah,” said the cleric, who served almost 26 months in prison for conspiracy over the 2002 Bali bombings before being cleared and released.

Habib Rizieq Shihab, head of the militant Islamic Defenders Front, said his followers would not resort to violence but stood ready to help the government enforce a ban through dialogue.

“If the government issues the ban, we agreed to help the government to convince the Ahmadiyah followers to return to the real Islam through dialogue. We won’t use any violent approach,” he said.
The government has not indicated how it will respond to last month’s recommendation from the Coordinating Body for Monitoring Religions and Beliefs – a panel set up during the Suharto dictatorship – to outlaw Ahmadiyah.

The sect, established in the country since the 1920s, believes Mohammed was not the final prophet, contradicting a central tenet of Islam.

Its plight has raised concerns among moderate Indonesians and human rights activists about religious tolerance in the country of some 230 million people, nearly 90 per cent of whom are Muslim.

Earlier today, hundreds of people rallied in central Jakarta in a show of support for religious freedom.

Representatives of the Ahmadiyah sect as well as Muslims and Christians gathered to urge the government to resist pressure from Islamic hardliners to ban the sect.

“We are here to show to Indonesia, to the world, that Indonesians love peace. To show that there are more Indonesians who love peace than those who don’t,” an organiser told the crowd.

The demonstrators carried banners reading Stop Religious Fascism and Stop Violence in the Name of Religion.

Residents from the mainly Muslim village of Saleman attacked the predominantly Christian village of Horale on the island of Seram.

Those killed came from the Christian village where at least two churches and more than 100 houses were set on fire.

A policespokesman says the clash was over a land border issue and not religious based.

About 200 policemen are guarding the border between the two villages.

In 1998 the same thing happened.  When Indonesia occupied East Timor, a Catholic country, in the late 1970s, hundreds of thousands of Catholics were killed with merciless jihadi fervor; and in Aceh, one of Indonesia’s island-parts, anti-Christian riots and massacres regularly occur today against the tiny Christian community. In Pakistan it’s worse. Christian churches and worshippers appear to be bombed on a frequent basis.

Pakistani Scholar: Dogs And Pigs Are Favorite Animals Of Jews

Prominent Islamic scholar Maulana Abdul Hakim Haqqani, who is based in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province, has said that the use of sniffer dogs to trace criminals is not sanctioned by the shari’a. The Urdu-language newspaper Roznama Mashriq quoted Maulana Haqqani as saying that the use of sniffer dogs is haram, or forbidden in Islam.

According to the report, Haqqani, the Nazim-e-Ala of Darul Uloom Islami Jamhuria at Takht Bhai in the North West Frontier Province, said that Islam does not validate the witness of a single man in any dispute; so, how could a dog be the reason of a man’s insult.

Haqqani said that dogs and pigs are favorite animals of the Jews, according to the report. He also asked the Pakistani government to ban the use of sniffer dogs in the investigation of cases by police.

Yesterday, a drunken Arab man identified as “Muhammad A.” took three Brazilian Jewish teenagers hostage in Warsaw where they were participating in the March of the Living. It now turns out that the hostage taker was the 23-year old son of Kuwait’s ambassador to Poland. The three teenagers were freed by Polish police after about an hour.
