 Roberto Calderoli, 52, a senior member of the Northern League, enraged Muslims two years ago during the row over a set of Danish cartoons featuring the Prophet Mohammed. He appeared on television wearing a T-shirt printed with one of the cartoons. The Italian consulate in Libya was set on fire and 11 people died in riots.

Currently, six boys are serving time in Berlin’s juvenile prison for honor killings. “In a way, these boys are victims, too,” she said. Sometimes they are forced to kill their favorite sister.

Iceland Jihad:

Islamic Prayers war-cry hits the Streets of Reykjavík

A sound sculpture by art student Thórarinn Jónsson in the form of a recording of Islamic prayers will sound from the balcony of the Iceland Academy of the Arts in Reykjavík for the next few days.

According to Jónsson, the main motive behind his work is to provide a counterbalance to the negative image of Islam in the Western world, Morgunbladid reports.

“The calls of prayer in the Middle East are sung in a very beautiful and lyrical way,” Jónsson said. The recording will be played five times a day for one week (beginning last week) for about one minute at a time.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said yesterday he had submitted a proposal to the cabinet.

The proposal drew flak from non-governmental and women’s organisations, with their representatives making clear their outrage.

National Council for Women’s Organisations Malaysia (NCWO) deputy president Faridah Khalid called the proposal “backward and unfair”.
“This is an infringement of our rights,” she said.

“We’re the victims and now you’re creating more problems.

“Why must you put more restrictions on women?

“We have worked hard over the years to get to this level.”

Faridah said the government should think it out properly before taking such measures.

The House of Saud, in alliance with an extremist religious establishment which enforces the most restrictive interpretation of sharia, Islamic law, has created a legal system that treats women as minors unable to exercise authority over even trivial daily matters.

The most egregious consequences of this repressive regime occasionally filter out from the Gulf Kingdom: the notorious case in Qatif of the girl who was jailed after being gang raped on a charge of consorting with a male non-relative; the schoolgirls believed to have burnt to death in Mecca as religious police would not let them leave the fiery premises without headscarves; or the happily married Fatima Azzaz from Mansour, forced to divorce her husband at the whim of her half-brothers.

Beyond these high-profile cases is a demoralising and sometimes ridiculous reality in which women cannot open bank accounts for their children, take them to the dentist or even on a field trip without the written permission of the father.

Petty humiliations are endemic. Two women who spoke to HRW said, in a report released today, that judges had refused them the right to speak in court as their voices were “shameful” – only their guardians were allowed to speak on their behalf. Saudi courts require a mu’arif (a male to identify her under the full face veil) before a woman can even attempt to testify.

“The Saudi government sacrifices human rights to maintain male control over women,” said Farida Deif from HRW. “Saudi women won’t make progress until the government ends the abuses that stem from these misguided policies.”

Riyadh (AsiaNews) – Arab women had more rights at the time of the Romans than they have today.  At that time, in fact, their capacity to conduct their own economic affairs was recognised, which is not true in Saudi Arabia today.  This is maintained by a female Saudi scholar, Hatoon al-Fassi, in a book entitled “Women In Pre-Islamic Arabia”, published by British Archaeological Reports.

Barred from teaching at King Saud University in 2001, the scholar has examined the situation of Nabataea, a kingdom that at the beginning of the Christian era included parts of modern-day Jordan, Syria, and Saudi Arabia, and had its capital in Petra.  Here, Fassi maintains, women were able to conduct business, without even the form of “protection” required by Greek tradition in these matters.  In her opinion, it is precisely because of the lack of understanding on the part of Islamic scholars of the influences of Greco-Roman legislation on sharia that the limited rights and freedoms for women have arisen.

“We now live the worst status imaginable”: this statement from Fawziya al-Oyouni, a women’s rights activist, is reported in the review of the book on Middle East Online, which highlights how, when religious authorities, ministers, and businessmen met last month in Riyadh to discuss work for women, there were no women visible, because they were confined to another room, and the men were able only to hear them.

Gaza’s water authority has dumped 60 million liters of partially treated and untreated sewage into the Mediterranean Sea since January 24, the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a report released on Wednesday.

A Palestinian rescue worker searches for bodies in raw sewage after a cesspool embankment collapsed in the village of Umm Naser, in the northern Gaza Strip. An earth embankment around a cesspool suddenly collapsed, spewing a river of sewage and mud that killed at least 10 people.

“The sewage discharge is contaminating Gaza seawater and posing health risks for bathers and consumers of seafood. The sewage flows northward to Israeli coasts, including near the Ashkelon desalination plant. Urgent studies are needed to examine the extent of the impact,” the report reads.

The report’s authors blamed Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip for the Gazans’ inability to treat the sewage.

“This sewage cannot be treated due to the lack of a steady electricity supply within the Gaza Strip, Israel’s restrictions on fuel imports and prohibitions on the import of materials and necessary spare parts,” according to the report.
