PARIS (AP) – A French appeals court sentenced a former imam Monday to five years in prison for involvement in a plot to stage attacks in France to support fighters in Chechnya.
The Paris Court of Appeals stiffened Chelalli Benchellali’s original 18-month suspended sentence, imposing instead a five-year prison term, and ordered him to return from Algeria to serve his time in France.

Former Muslim chaplain at Gitmo passes on hearsay about Qur’an desecration
James “Yusuf” Yee, a Muslim chaplain in the U.S. military, was the focus of a Keystone Kops investigation a few years ago, when he was accused of carrying classified documents out of Guantanamo, and then prosecutors weren’t sure they were classified, and finally they dropped the whole thing. Yee then began touring around complaining of his persecution by government authorities, and playing up a sense of Muslim victimhood.
But in this interview on Syrian TV, he outdoes himself, passing on stories from Gitmo detainees — that is, people who learned and internalized Muhammad’s dictum “war is deceit” — of atrocities that he did not personally witness.

Read it all and find out to whom it was degrading, via Yee the moralist, who has never to my knowledge spoken out against polygamy, wife-beating, female genital mutilation, and the rest. Which is not to suggest that these lurid stories are true. Yee also goes on to accuse his fellow American soldiers of racism and “Islamophobia.”

Great: British counter-terrorism officials think the term “war on terror” is “offensive and inappropriate.” Agreed. But are they finally ready to go to war against an actual enemy rather than against a tactic? Will they declare that they are engaged in a defensive action against a global jihad?
Not quite. Even the watery term “war on terror,” you see, is offensive to Muslims — as if what happened on July 7, 2005 in London was not terrorism, much less Islamic jihad, but just a criminal action by nobody in particular.

Counter-terrorism officials are rethinking their approach to tackling the radicalisation of Muslim youth, abandoning what they admit has been offensive and inappropriate language. They say the term “war on terror” will no longer be heard from ministers. Instead, they will use less emotive language, emphasising the criminal nature of the plots and conspiracies. The government in future, they add, will talk of a “struggle” against extremist ideology, rather than a “battle”.
“We hadn’t got the message right,” said one senior official. He added: “We must talk in a language which is not offensive.” Another said that the terrorist threat must not be described as a “Muslim problem”.

The international community should counter the spread of Islamophobia partly due to “misinformation and misperceptions”, participants at a UN counter-terrorism conference said.

Speaking at the 3-day conference, experts said there is a need for the international community to counter the spread of Islamophobia, which they noted has been growing in recent years partly because of misinformation and misperceptions about the religion.
The emergence of “misguided groups” that have deviated from the straight path to fanaticism, violence and extremism, attributing their acts to Islam, in no way justifies associating this phenomenon with the Islamic faith, they said during the conference titled “Terrorism: Dimensions, Threats and Countermeasures” in Tunis.
“It profits from weak State capacity to maintain law and order,” said co-chair and Tunisian Culture and Preservation of Heritage Minister Mohamed El Aziz Ben Achour, during the concluding session on November 17.
“These vulnerable areas are exploited by terrorists to mobilize recruits and justify violence. None of the religions are a cause of political radicalism and extremism. Religious doctrine may be ‘tools of mobilization,’ rather than a direct cause,” he said at the conference which was jointly organized by the UN’s Department of Political Affairs and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
Participants agreed that terrorism flourishes in environments where there is discontent, exclusion, humiliation, poverty, political oppression and human rights abuses, as well as in countries engaged in regional conflicts.
