‘Overstayed Their Welcome’: Sri Lanka Continues Mass Deportations After Easter Bombings

Sri Lankan immigration authorities revealed this week that nearly 50 foreigners without valid visas are among the hundreds deported by the South Asian island nation in the wake of the Islamic State (ISIS)-linked attack that primarily attacked Christians on Easter Sunday.

On Wednesday, Sri Lanka’s News 1st learned from a spokesperson for the country’s Immigration and Emigration Department that “a total of 48 foreigners without valid visas have been deported” from the island nation.

“The media spokesperson added that further investigations are underway to arrest individuals without visas,” the Sri Lankan news outlet noted.

The capital’s anti-violent extremism co-ordinator, Christina Kiernan, made the claim that jihadists who had come back from Syria and Iraq were now living “orderly lives” following public anger over the government’s decision not to strip people who fought for radical Islamic terror groups of their Swedish passports.

“The IS returnees we have talked to so far have no known current crime, they have a job and an orderly life to the extent that we do not have knowledge of activities that can in any way scare anyone,” she insisted during an appearance on TV4 this week.

“So they are returning from this type of business and becoming caring, well-behaved citizens?” After Five presenter Tilde de Paula asked the Stockholm official to confirm.

“That is the experience of the people we have talked to,” Kiernan said, before admitting that “so far [this number] is only a few”.

Around half of the 300 militants the Swedish Security Service (Säpo) estimates left the Scandinavian country to fight in the Middle East are believed to have travelled back to Sweden, however a survey conducted in December revealed that local authorities had lost track of most of the returnees.

Police probing historic child sex abuse and exploitation in Rotherham arrest 38 men and two women in two months following claims of 13 victims

Detectives investigating child sexual exploitation in Rotherham have arrested 40 people over the past two months.

The 38 men and two women were questioned following allegations made by 13 victims about sexual abuse against them between 1997 and 2015.

The National Crime Agency said the people arrested are aged between 29 and 53 and are from Sheffield, Rotherham, Leeds, Dewsbury, and Maidstone in Kent.

All have been bailed or released under investigation pending further inquiries.

The Yorkshire town has been rocked by a series of allegations of sex abuse by Asian gangs

The spokeswoman said the victims in the latest cases were aged between 11 and 26 at the time of the alleged offences.

The National Crime Agency, often called ‘Britain’s FBI’, is conducting a huge investigation after a 2014 report found more than 1,000 young girls had been abused in the South Yorkshire town.

Scandals have since engulfed other towns and cities, including Newcastle, Telford and most recently Huddersfield, with a series of similar gangs jailed.

Vulnerable young victims were typically given drugs and alcohol before being passed around between men of Pakistani heritage to be raped and sexually assaulted at will.

Authorities did little to tackle the abusers or save their young victims from their terrible ordeals, often due to fears over being labelled racist.

The latest arrests are part of the ongoing Operation Stovewood investigation.

Violence across the Muslim world during the holy month, sometimes referred to as “Ramadan Rage“, has been linked to terror attacks and other violent incidents year after year.

In 2017, 3,343 people were casualties of violence during the holy month as a result of Islamic-linked violence with 1,639 killed in attacks. The following year thankfully saw a drop in the number of fatalities to 841, while the total number of casualties was down 45 per cent to 1,855.

French business owners in the city of Montpellier are calling on local government to provide increased security, arguing that violence has increased markedly during the Ramadan month over the last four years.

The business owners all operate in the neighbourhood of Gambetta and say that when Ramadan comes every year, they see an increase of violence that could negatively affect their businesses, French local news network Actu reports.

Local businessman Ajouri M. explained the problem saying, “for four years now at the same time during the holy month of Ramadan, the Gambetta neighbourhood is the scene of violence and extraordinary tensions. And Ramadan is coming for a month.”

He went on to explain that the neighbourhood often sees stabbings, exchanges of gunfire and violent altercations and although police do respond to the incidents, he claimed that the perpetrators come back as soon as the officers leave.
