Catholic Bishops Call for Urgent Action Against Climate Change

Six presidents of continental bishops’ conferences have signed an appeal calling on government leaders to take immediate action to overcome the “devastating effects of the climate crisis,” the Vatican reported Friday.

In their appeal, the bishops summon politicians to work towards an ambitious implementation of the Paris Climate Accord, which urges policies aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The prelates also throw their collective moral weight behind the upcoming U.N. climate change conference, to be held this December in Katowice, Poland (COP24).

The appeal was presented in Rome on Friday and signed by Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, president of the Council of Bishops’ Conferences of Europe; Cardinal Oswald Gracias, president of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences; Archbishop Jean-Claude Hollerich, president of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union; Archbishop Gabriel Mbilingi, president of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar; Cardinal Ruben Salazar Gomez, president of the Latin American bishops’ council (CELAM); and Cardinal Jose Luis Lacunza Maestrojuan, president of the Latin American bishops’ council’s economic committee.

Conspicuous by their absence were the bishops of North America.

As Hugh Fitzgerald has often noted, Islam attracts the psychically marginal, for it provides a total explanation of the universe, taking away the difficult necessity of making moral decisions on one’s own. Islamic apologists often criticize Christianity for offering only “vague moral precepts,” comparing it unfavorably to Islam, which has a rule for everything that human beings can imagine doing. It is understandable that this total regulation of life would appeal to someone who has suffered from mental problems, as Sinead O’Connor has so publicly. That makes this a sad story. It is not, as O’Connor, aka Shuhada’ Davitt, “the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey”; if that were the case, there would be a steady stream of intelligent theologians converting to Islam, and it has yet to be proven that Sinead O’Connor is either intelligent or a theologian. It is much more obviously the ruthless exploitation of an emotionally unstable woman, and that is a shame.

From the window of her flat overlooking the canal path in a suburb of Dewsbury in Yorkshire, a blonde woman watches two female figures walking past as they chatter in a foreign tongue.

Both the passers-by are covered in black Islamic gowns, only a glimpse of their eyes show from the 2 in gap in the veils across their faces.

They, like many Muslim women who live here, speak little or no English. Lots of them will have no contact with any person from another religion or culture. Many, I imagine, have been brought to the UK to wed the British men of south Asian heritage who have made this area their home.

The wives have restricted lives: bringing up children, cooking for families, or going to women-only events at the huge local mosque run by the Deobandis, a powerful sect of Islam whose most outspoken preachers have urged followers not to mix with Christians, Jews or Hindus.

This is clearly the case of Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff, who was fined and given a jail sentence for calling Muhammad a pedophile. He married a six-year-old and consummated the marriage when she was nine, but “the Austrian courts had held that ES was making value judgments partly based on untrue facts and without regard to the historical context.”

The problem that the Austrian courts overlooked here was that Muhammad is held up in Islam as the perfect example of conduct for Muslims (cf. Qur’an 33:21). Accordingly, his example does lead to pedophilia, and in any case the distinction between pedophilia and child marriage can be very fine. In Afghanistan virtually all girls above third-grade age are married, and because of Muhammad, but the Austrian court would have us believe either that there is no pedophilia in these child marriages, or that they have nothing to do with Muhammad, both of which could be proven false readily.

And as for “untrue facts,” the hadith collection that Muslims consider most reliable, Sahih Bukhari, affirms more than once that Aisha was nine at the time of the consummation of the marriage.

Finally, would the European Court of Human Rights rule that someone deserved a fine and imprisonment for criticizing Jesus? The case wouldn’t even come to them.

This is an important step toward the imposition of Sharia in Europe, as it is a tacit acceptance of Sharia blasphemy restrictions on criticizing Muhammad.
