BUDAPEST (Reuters) – Hungary’s parliament on Wednesday approved a package of bills that criminalises some help given to illegal immigrants, defying the European Union and human rights groups and narrowing the scope for action by non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been a vocal critic of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s open-door migrant policy and has led eastern European opposition to EU quotas that aimed to distribute asylum seekers around the bloc.

Orban’s right-wing Fidesz party tightened its grip on parliament in an April election fought on a fiercely anti-immigration platform that demonised U.S. billionaire George Soros and liberal NGOs he backs. Orban accuses Soros of encouraging mass immigration to undermine Europe, a charge Soros denies.

Under the new law, officially called “STOP Soros”, individuals or groups who help migrants not entitled to protection to submit requests for asylum or who help illegal migrants gain status to stay in Hungary will be liable to prison terms.

“The Hungarian people rightfully expects the government to use all means necessary to combat illegal immigration and the activities that aid it,” Interior Minister Sandor Pinter wrote in a justification attached to the draft legislation.

“The STOP Soros package of bills serves that goal, making the organisation of illegal immigration a criminal offence. We want to use the bills to stop Hungary from becoming a country of immigrants,” he said.

“We tolerate the fact that some [EU] member states … admit migrants. Meanwhile, they should tolerate the fact that we do not wish to do so”

Many Americans erroneously trace the roots of Islamic terrorism against their nation to September 11, 2001.  In reality, the United States’ very first conflict with Muslim terrorists was also its very first war as nation—and it won that war 213 years ago today, on June 10, 1805.

Centuries before that, the Barbary States of Muslim North Africa—specifically Tripoli, Algiers, Tunis—had been thriving on the slave trade of Europeans abducted from virtually every corner of coastal Europe—including Britain, Ireland, Denmark, and Iceland.  These raids were so successful that, “between 1530 and 1780 there were almost certainly a million and quite possibly as many as a million and a quarter white, European Christians enslaved by the Muslims of the Barbary Coast,” to quote American historian, Robert Davis.

The treatment of these European slaves was exacerbated by the fact that they were “infidels” and their owners Muslims.  As Robert Playfair (b.1828), who served for years as a consul in Barbary, explained, “In almost every case they [European slaves] were hated on account of their religion.”  Three centuries earlier, John Foxe (b.1516) had written in his Book of Martyrs that, “In no part of the globe are Christians so hated, or treated with such severity, as at Algiers.”

This could be Bush’s most enduring, and most damaging, legacy.

Quran Found in Vehicle Purposely Rammed into French Police

Police in Paris discovered a Quran along with texts in Arabic in a car which was used to ram a police vehicle twice before the suspects fled on foot.

The attacks on the Paris police van occurred on Wednesday at around midnight on the Avenue de la Porte d’Aubervilliers in the northern part of the city bordering the 18th and 19th arrondissements, BFMTV reports.

Initially, the men in the car were asked to slow down as they were speeding. Following the warning, the car rammed the police van and sped away with the police in pursuit. When the vehicle was stopped by traffic, the driver attempted to ram the police van a second time and then the four occupants got out and ran, abandoning the car.

Police searched the car finding a copy of the Quran inside along with Arabic texts and noted that the vehicle had not been reported stolen at the time. Shortly after, a bomb squad team was dispatched to the scene to search the car for any potential explosives but none were found, according to investigators.
