30 Muslim ambassadors meet Dutch minister over anti-Islam film

Hague. The Dutch foreign minister met ambassadors from 30 Muslim countries to discuss the imminent broadcast of an anti-Islam film made by a far-right Dutch parliamentarian, his office said.
The talks, held at the request of the 50-strong Organisation for the Islamic Conference (OIC), came as several Muslim countries threatened an economic boycott of the Netherlands if the film is shown.

BRUSSELS — Dutch anti-Koran film “Fitna” seems unlikely to air on domestic TV, with broadcasters lining up to say they will not take it. None are ready to accept demands by Geert Wilders, the politician behind the 15-minute film, that it should air complete and unedited.
The latest rejections were reported Thursday in Dutch daily De Volkskrant. The Netwerk and Nova news programs, on pubcaster Nederland 2, have both been talking to Wilders but now say his demands are “bizarre” and unacceptable.

Commercial broadcasters SBS and RTL are also reported to have rejected the film.

If no broadcaster picks up “Fitna” this month, Wilders has been told he can screen the film for journalists only on March 28 at the Dutch press center in The Hague.

In that capacity he harshly criticized Israel’s response to the terrorist attacks against it.

Cunningham’s appointment is a disturbing reminder of how far the Bush Administration has gone in rejecting Israel’s national right of self-defense. His appointment in the aftermath of Condoleezza Rice forcing Israel to retreat from Gaza is no accident. Cunningham has been sent as the hatchet man to force Israel to continue surrendering to terrorism.

Naples, 5 March (AKI) – A 1,000 square metre mosque is scheduled to be inaugurated in the southern Italian city of Naples, according to one of the city’s Islamic leaders.

Vatican City, 5 March (AKI) – Pope Benedict XVI will host a landmark ‘Catholic-Muslim Forum’ in early November, aimed at improving ties between the two faiths, it was announced on Wednesday.

“In order to further develop Catholic-Muslim dialogue, the participants agreed to establish the ‘Catholic-Muslim Forum’ and to organise the first seminar of the forum in Rome from 4 to 6 November 2008,” said a joint statement signed by the heads of the two delegations, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran and by Sheikh Abdal Hakim Murad.

The Middle East Forum sent out a press release today, “Muslim Weekly Apologizes to Daniel Pipes,” that provides details on the statement just issued by a London-based publication.

This makes it the second Islamist organization that has apologized to me, and the second one to do so under threat of a law suit. I detailed the prior one in 2005 at “[The Canadian Islamic Congress:] An Islamist Apology,” when the CIC took back its calumnies against me, covered my legal expenses, and made a donation in my honor to charity.

So far as I know, these two apologies are without parallel. I hope they become part of a trend, whereby parties that spread false information wrongfully discrediting anti-Islamist writers and activists must publicly retract their libelous statements.

Also, they make up a part of the Legal Project’s effort to protect anti-Islamist writers and activists so that we can continue our work pointing out the dangers of radical Islam. As today’s news implies, the Project’s work must at times go on the offensive to be effective. (March 3, 2008)

‘Muslim fanatics benefiting from public grants’

Muslim extremists should be banned from handing out literature and prevented from sitting on public bodies, David Cameron has said.

The Conservative leader has also accused ministers and councils of allowing fanatics to benefit from public grants to Muslim bodies.

“The Government has allowed hundreds of thousands of pounds to local authorities to improve community cohesion, but there are worrying signs that ministers have taken their eye off the ball,” he said.

“I will be making proposals to isolate extremists and make certain they cannot obtain public grants or get invited to sit on public bodies.

“That won’t just apply to Islamic extremists. We will be equally vigilant in ensuring that groups linked to the BNP or animal rights militants are excluded too.

Police stop Islamic work Destruction on Temple Mt.

Police on Tuesday stopped Wakf Muslim trust officials from performing unauthorized construction work on the Temple Mount.

Officers blocked workers from continuing unauthorized “surfacing word,” said Jerusalem police chief Cmdr. Aharon Franco. “It is our duty to ensure that the status quo is maintained on the Temple Mount.”

He said Wakf officials had planned to carry out the work as a result of the tensions in east Jerusalem over the recent violence in the Gaza Strip and that the unusual police intervention sparked opposition on the holy site.

According to decades-old regulations, Israel maintains overall security control at the site, while the Wakf is charged with day-to-day administration.

Independent Israeli archeologists have long charged Islamic officials with destruction of antiquities at the site and blamed the government and the Antiquities Authority for turning a blind eye due to the political sensitivities involved.

Hooded gunmen attack Paris police

PARIS, France (AP) — France’s interior minister says hooded attackers have opened fire on police officers and wounded four.

Michele Alliot-Marie says that about 30 people, some of them armed, ambushed the officers Sunday in the southern Paris suburb of Grigny.

She says the officers were responding to a call about an act of vandalism on a local bakery.

The minister’s office says that three of the officers were hit in face with buckshot while another was hit in the leg and hospitalized.

Alliot-Marie says efforts are under way Monday to identify and apprehend those involved in the ambush.

Again, I’m not legally literate, but I grasp that the purpose of the pretrial conference is set up ground rules for the damages involved, the amount and scope of discovery, the rummaging of each side through the other side’s business, and the time frame for when discovery finishes and when the actual trial starts.

It seemed pretty much like boiler-plate until it got to the alleged damages. It started with Ahmed Shqeirat:

[I would be interested in knowing exactly which law enforcement agencies have been regarding Ahmed Shqeirat with increased scrutiny, so that I could commend them.]

As a result of US Airways and MAC [Metropolitan Airports Commission]’s conduct on November 20-21 [2006] and the following defamatory statements, Mr. Shqeirat’s reputation has been badly damaged. Mr. Shqeirat’s freedom to conduct meaningful business opportunities has been limited. Mr. Shqeirat is a businessman in addition to being a religious leader. Following the november 20-21 incidents, his transactions have been scrutinized delayed and his merchandise has been withheld.

An update on this story, found buried in a set of Associated Press news briefs — hence the highly unusual headline. “MINNESOTA: Man faces life … Mercury in fish … etc,” via the Grand Forks Herald, February 19:

Imams lose complaint: The U.S. Department of Transportation said an airline didn’t discriminate against six imams when it removed them from a flight at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in 2006.

The department’s assistant general counsel, Samuel Podberesky, informed the Council on American-Islamic Relations of the department’s conclusion in a Jan. 14 letter.

But the department did fault US Airways for refusing to book the men on another flight after the FBI cleared them.

The letter is among several exhibits entered last week in a lawsuit the imams filed against the airline and the airport in federal court in Minneapolis. The trial is scheduled for August.

The men claim they were discriminated against because they appeared Middle Eastern and some of them prayed before boarding the flight.

An Austrian court has excluded a young Muslim woman from the start of her trial on terrorism charges because she refused to remove her full-face veil.
The suspect, identified as Mona S, is charged, along with her husband Mohamed M, with links to al-Qaeda and posting a threatening video on the internet.

The presiding judge ordered the woman to be escorted from the court, arguing the jury could not judge her without seeing her face.

Both suspects deny the charges. (they always do/ed)

Arriving at the court in Vienna, the young woman refused to take off her full-covering niqab because she said there were “too many men here”.

Mona S’s defence lawyer argued that her trial could be prejudiced.

‘Targets mentioned’

The couple, both Austrian citizens of Arab descent, were arrested in September 2007 after a video was posted on the internet threatening attacks in Austria and Germany if military personnel were not withdrawn from Afghanistan.

The video was signed “Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF)”.

The authorities say that the man mentioned possible targets such as the Euro 2008 football championship in internet chat groups frequented by radical Islamists. The woman is alleged to have translated Arabic texts into German.

The couple’s lawyer argued that GIMF was not a terrorist organisation and there was not the slightest evidence that the couple had any link to al-Qaeda.

The couple are married under Islamic law, but not under Austrian law, the court heard.

If found guilty, they could face up to ten years in prison. A verdict is expected later this week.

Protesters already have torched Dutch flags in Afghanistan ahead of a new Dutch film portraying Islam’s holy book as a “fascist” text that incites violence and preaches the oppression of women and homosexuals.

A Dutch Cabinet minister postponed his trip to Somalia on Friday due to “specific threats” linked to the film, and the Dutch government has urged lawmaker Geert Wilders to scrap his film for the safety of its citizens abroad.

The right-wing legislator previously warned of a “tsunami” of Islam swamping the Netherlands and said Muslims should tear up half of the Quran if they want to live here.

Wilders has lived under round-the-clock security since the 2004 murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh by an Islamic radical enraged by his short film, “Submission,” a fictional study of abused Muslim women with scenes of near-naked women with Quranic texts engraved on their flesh.

The film “Fitna” — an Arabic word meaning discord — puts the centuries-old Dutch traditions of religious tolerance and freedom of speech on a collision course.

If it airs, Dutch Muslims are expected to file criminal complaints for racial or religious vilification. Prosecutors would then have to decide whether to charge Wilders with any offense.

“Our law is very clear — anybody can make a film. We have freedom of expression and you cannot restrict that,” says Moroccan-born Sadik Harchaoui, chief of the Forum Institute for Multicultural Development.

“Can you offend people? The answer is yes. I’m not saying you should do it or it is desirable, but you can,” he added. “But if the film is insulting and preaches hate, then the law has to take action.”

The Dutch government says it cannot ban the film but is attempting to distance itself from Wilders, the leader of the Freedom Party, which holds nine of Parliament’s 150 seats.

“It is our responsibility to make clear to everyone that the views and actions of this one elected representative are not those of the government,” Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende told reporters last week. “We defend the core values of freedom and respect. We guarantee freedom of expression and of religion, for Muslims as for everyone else.”

The moderate National Moroccan Council has said it is trying to “neutralize the threat” posed by the film, but cannot rule out violence at home.

“We will have succeeded if, after the film, Mr. Wilders is frustrated,” chairman, Mohamed Rabbae said at a news conference in January. “If he sees there are no riots and Muslims are cleverer and more democratic than he thinks.”

THE HAGUE, 04/03/08 – The Christian democrats (CDA) would only win 29 seats if general elections were held now. The disfavour of the voters is the result of the party’s attempts to prevent Geert Wilders’s film on the Koran from being shown, pollster Maurice de Hond reported.

Last week, CDA still scored 32 seats. The new result of 29 is the party’s lowest score since the spring of 2006. CDA currently has 41 seats in the Lower House, which has 150 members.

The three seats lost by the CDA would be divided between Wilders’ anti-‘Islamisation’ Party for Freedom (PVV), the conservatives (VVD) and Proud of the Netherlands (TON). Each of these parties would win one more seat than last week.

PVV (now 9 seats) and VVD (now 22 seats) would each win 16 seats. Proud of the Netherlands, the new party being set up by ex-VVD MP Rita Verdonk, would enter the Lower House with 19 seats, De Hond reports.

Verhagen

CDA Minister Maxime Verhagen appealed explicitly to Wilders on Thursday not to broadcast the film. CDA Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende also pressed the PVV leader on Friday to withdraw the film, although he worded this less strongly than Verhagen. In the Lower House, the CDA was the only party that supported Verhagen’s explicit call to drop the movie.
