* Here he takes on an egregious example from a genre of loaded comparisons, this one made by Amartya Sen, the Nobel laureate economist, in his recent book Identity and Violence. Sen has the temerity to proclaim, “…the Jewish Philosopher Maimonides was forced to emigrate from an intolerant Europe in the twelfth century, he found a tolerant refuge in the Arab world.”

Sen’s ahistorical drivel aside, Maimonides (b. 1135, in Cordova) was but thirteen years old (in 1148) when Muslim Cordova fell into the hands of the particularly fanatical Berber Muslim Almohads, who invaded the Iberian peninsula from North Africa. Maimonides and all the dhimmi Jews in Cordova were compelled to choose between Islam and exile. Choosing the latter course, Maimonides and his family for twelve years subsequently led a nomadic life, wandering across Spain. By 1160 they crossed the Mediterranean, and settled at Fez, Morocco (also under Almohad control) where, unknown to the authorities, they hoped to pass as Muslims, while living as crypto-Jews. Maimonides’ dual life, however, became increasingly dangerous as his reputation was steadily growing, and the authorities began to inquire into the religious disposition of this highly gifted young man. He was even charged by an informer with the crime of having relapsed (apostasized) from Islam, and, but for the intercession of the poet and theologian Abu al-‘Arab al Mu’ishah, a Muslim friend, he would have suffered the fate of his colleague Judah ibn Shoshan, who had shortly before been executed on a similar charge. Given these precarious circumstances, Maimonides’ family left Fez, embarking in 1165 to Acre, then to Jerusalem, and on to Fostat (Cairo), where they settled, living once again as dhimmis, albeit under more tolerant Fatimid rule.

The jihad depredations of the Almohads (1130-1232) wreaked enormous destruction on both the Jewish and Christian populations in Spain and North Africa. A contemporary Judeo-Arabic account by Solomon Cohen (which comports with Arab historian Ibn Baydhaq’s sequence of events), from January 1148 C.E, described the Muslim Almohad conquests in North Africa, and Spain, as follows:

Abd al-Mumin…the leader of the Almohads after the death of Muhammad Ibn Tumart the Mahdi …captured Tlemcen [in the Maghreb] and killed all those who were in it, including the Jews, except those who embraced Islam…[In Sijilmasa] One hundred and fifty persons were killed for clinging to their [Jewish] faith…All the cities in the Almoravid [dynastic rulers of North Africa and Spain prior to the Almohads] state were conquered by the Almohads. One hundred thousand persons were killed in Fez on that occasion, and 120,000 in Marrakesh. The Jews in all [Maghreb] localities [conquered]…groaned under the heavy yoke of the Almohads; many had been killed, many others converted; none were able to appear in public as Jews…Large areas between Seville and Tortosa [in Spain] had likewise fallen into Almohad hands.

Moses Maimonides was a great many things, but he certainly was not a soldier of Allah, even though Muslims would make believe that he was. He wasn’t.

Neither did Muslims invent the wheel, aeronautics, arts or medicine or anything useful: Islam produces nothing, Islam stifles mental growth and if you don’t believe it go to any Muslim country and see it for yourself.

But on Thursday, a muezzin is calling Spanish Muslims to prayer at the first mosque to be opened in Granada since the reconquista, the culmination of a 22-year-old project that has been plagued by controversy.

For those who built the Great Mosque of Granada, which looks out onto the once highly symbolic Alhambra Palace, its inauguration – attended by a string of Muslim and non-Muslim dignitaries – heralds a new dawn for the faith in Europe.

“The mosque is a symbol of a return to Islam among the Spanish people and among indigenous Europeans that will break with the malicious concept of Islam as a foreign and immigrant religion in Europe,” says Abdel Haqq Salaberria, a spokesman for the mosque and convert to Islam.

“It will act as a focal point for the Islamic revival in Europe.”

It is precisely this which has caused some discomfort among the local population, but it appears that the mosque’s insistence on harmonious co-existence has gone some way towards calming fears.

At a time when the Islamic faith is viewed with some suspicion within Europe, Spanish Muslims are hoping to remind the continent of the vast cultural and intellectual contribution made by the Moors, to “art and architecture, astronomy, music, medicine, science, and learning.”

The Moorish period in southern Spain saw Muslims and Jews living side-by-side. The city of Cordoba became a cultural centre for both faiths, while universities sprang up in cities across Andalucia. Trade and industry also flourished.

The new mosque intends to offer a series of courses on subjects such as education, law and medicine, as well as Arabic language classes, and is planning on issuing its own degree in science to European Muslims.

The mosque and its extensive gardens will also be open to the public.

It will serve as a spiritual home to 500 Spanish Muslims, the majority of whom have converted to the faith in the course of the last 30 years.

Struggle

It has taken a long time to get this far.

The land on which the mosque has been built was bought 22 years ago, but city authorities continually objected to the planning proposals.

When it was finally accepted that the land could be used for religious purposes, objections were raised to the layout of the building.
Planners had to rethink the height and design of the building’s minaret.

But opposition to the scheme, which received financial backing from Libya, the United Arab Emirates and Morocco, gradually subsided.

The mayor, a member of Spain’s ruling right-wing party, will attend Thursday’s inauguration.

The king of Spain was also offered an invitation.

But “prior engagements” meant he was unable to accept.

However, it also says that the “transgressors” — who are clearly Jews from the context, since it is talking about Moses etc. — “changed the word from that which had been given them” (2:59).

This goes for Christians as well as Jews:

“But because of their breach of their covenant, We cursed them, and made their hearts grow hard; they change the words from their (right) places and forget a good part of the message that was sent them, nor wilt thou cease to find them- barring a few – ever bent on (new) deceits: but forgive them, and overlook (their misdeeds): for Allah loveth those who are kind. From those, too, who call themselves Christians, We did take a covenant, but they forgot a good part of the message that was sent them: so we estranged them, with enmity and hatred between the one and the other, to the day of judgment. And soon will Allah show them what it is they have done.” (5:13-14)

On those verses rests the Islamic idea that the Jewish and Christian Scriptures have been corrupted, as well as the assertions that the earlier prophets were Muslim (3:67, etc.).

Muslim patrols to ‘protect’ churches in Mindanao

In the predominantly Muslim island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines ordinary citizens have started nightly patrols in the streets around churches to allow Catholics to celebrate “dawn masses” until Christmas.

Zamboanga (AsiaNews) – On the first Sunday of Advent patrols made up of Muslim volunteers began a nightly watch to protect churches in the predominantly Muslim island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines. Grateful to these young people who are providing “help and protection” during the Christmas period residents near these Christian places of worship are offering them food and drink.

As part of this muftis from Basilan, Lanao Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi provinces have issued fatwas or Islamic edicts to remind the faithful that terrorism is prohibited and that Muhammad himself guaranteed Christians protection and freedom of worship.

“I have promised them (Christian residents) equal protection, and I asked Muslims and Christians here to uphold mutual respect on matters of religious belief,” said Sukarno Utto, village chief in Shariff Kabunsuan in Maguindanao city. “For this reason we have joined the local police in nightly patrols, especially during the Simbang Gabi (dawn masses),” a Filipino tradition that goes back centuries in which mass begins every day at 4 pm in every church till Christmas Day.

Government authorities and the police have expressed “satisfaction” for the decision taken by Muslim civilians.

According to the local city police chief, Superintendent Willy Dangane, this initiative must be praised. “It is especially useful because if the police does all it can, it still needs real help from citizens if we want to maintain peace and stability.”

Heavy security in Indonesia for Christmas

JAKARTA (Reuters) – More than 17,000 police and soldiers have been deployed in the Indonesian capital to guard against a repeat of Christmas Eve attacks seven years ago, when Christian churches in the mainly Muslim nation were bombed.

There had been no intelligence reports of a possible attack by Islamic militants but police were taking no chances, Jakarta police spokesman Ketut Untung Yoga Ana said on Monday.

“We are anticipating any eventualities even though there are no indications of an attack,” he said.

Police will check churchgoers’ bags in some locations, another police officer said.

The coordinated bombings targeting churches on Christmas Eve in 2000 left 18 people dead nationwide.

The bombings and a series of other attacks that followed have been blamed on members of the Southeast Asian regional militant group Jemaah Islamiah.

Jakarta’s police chief, Adang Firman, said extra security would be provided to bigger churches.

“The threat of terror is always present,” he told Elshinta radio.

Volunteer groups, including members of Islamic mass organisations, will help police to ensure peaceful Christmas celebrations, said the Jakarta police spokesman.

The youth wing of the Nahdlatul Ulama, the largest Islamic organisation in the world’s most populous Muslim country, is deploying 15,000 members nationwide to guard Churches and other venues used by Christians during Christmas.

“We do this every year. We live in a diverse nation and we respect differences,” the youth wing’s chairman, Syaifullah Yusuf, was quoted as saying on the group’s Web site.

Around 10 percent of Indonesia’s 220 million people are Christian. Muslims make up about 85 percent of the population and while the vast majority are moderates, there is an active militant minority.

Police have arrested hundreds of militants linked to JI since the 2002 Bali bombings in which more than 200 people were killed.

There has not been a major attack since three suicide bombers blew themselves up in Bali in October, 2005, killing at least 20 people. But police and some analysts say Indonesia still faces a considerable threat from Islamic militants.

You’ve probably heard that former British prime minister Tony Blair has become a Roman Catholic. Well, here’s a column at the Grauniad by Ajmal Masroor (who appeared on Channel 4’s bizarre “Make Me a Muslim” show) arguing that Blair should have converted to Islam instead, because Christianity is “regressive:” Blair, the Muslim?

Tony Blair’s conversion to Catholicism does not come as a surprise to anyone but I would have liked him to turn to Islam instead. Blair has claimed on many occasions that he has read the Quran and has said he found its teachings “progressive”. He is right that the Quran is progressive and as a revealed book of God, it is the latest testament. Why would Blair turn to the older versions of God’s testament when there is the Quran? His conversion sounds rather regressive to me.

Different denominational churches within Christianity are part of the same house. If the Church of England was not providing our former prime minister with spiritual fulfilment changing to another denomination within the same house surely will not make substantial difference. If he is looking for reform and spirituality, he should come to Islam. Blair has said the Quran strikes him as a reforming book “trying to return Judaism and Christianity to their origins, much as reformers attempted to do with the Christian church centuries later”. If he so admires the Quran for its reformist outlook, why turn to Christianity and particularly Catholic Church, which has been plagued with centuries of baggage?

In an article published by Foreign Affairs early this year, Blair spoke of the Quran as being inclusive. His new Church has been the most exclusive and in the name of its own version of Christianity has murdered and destroyed the lives and properties of many fellow Christians over the years. In his role as a Middle East envoy he would have won the hearts and minds of the Muslim world if he had come to Islam. He might have found redemption for his crimes against Iraq and its innocent people. His conversion to Catholicism would no doubt remind the Muslim world, especially the Arab world of the history of the Crusades. The blood of millions of people still stain the cobblestones of the Holy Land from the cold-blooded murders committed in the name of Christianity and was blessed by the then Papacy in Rome.

* Imagine, if you will, the reaction from Muslims if a Christian priest or minister said similar things about Islam. Actually, you don’t have to imagine; just recall any of the riots or murders that followed Pope Benedict’s indirect quotation of a relatively mild criticism of Islam by a Byzantine emperor.

Why has The Guardian allowed itself to become a mouthpiece for Islamic proselytizing?

*  The biggest problem with Eid al-Adha is in fact the root cause for all Islamic violence: It steals someone else’s narrative. The entire religion of Islam is based on taking other religions’ symbols, rituals, narratives and property and turning them into Islam’s. What is Eid al-Adha?

Eid Al-Adha – the “Festival of the Sacrifice” – … commemorates Abraham’s near-sacrifice of Ismael. In the Koran, it is Abraham’s first-born son, not Isaac, whom God demands as a sacrifice. Bound to the altar, Ismael is spared at the last second, as Abraham’s knife falls on a lamb instead.

That’s funny. Judaism and Christianity – both of which existed hundreds of years before Islam – both have that as Abraham sacrificing Isaac. In other words, this entire ‘holiday’ is a fraud that was made up to expropriate another religion’s narrative. This fraud and theft of another religion’s sanctified objects is typical of Islam and is the root cause for much of its violent nature: See, for example, the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the Basilica in Nazareth and many other sites that are holy to Judaism and Christianity in Israel, to Hinduism in India and so on for which Islam commits acts of violence against Nazareth.

So what is this all about? A group of (anonymous) Muslims goes on a tour of mosques around the country to seek hateful material, and finds plenty. After all, hating unbelievers and Jews is the essence of the Islamic belief-system. It is not a question of whether it is there, freely available for the believers, but simply how much of it and which mosque is more up front about it.

This Guardian “Commentary is Free” column by Seumas Milne shows how racist some leftists are – even when they pretend to be against racism: What do the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Italy and Israel have in common? They are all either European or European-settler states. And they all decided to boycott this week’s UN ­conference against racism in Geneva – even before Monday’s incendiary speech by the Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad which triggered a further white-flight walkout by representatives of another 23 European states. In international forums, it’s almost unprecedented to have such an undiluted racial divide of whites-versus-the-rest. And for that to happen in a global meeting called to combat racial hatred doesn’t exactly augur well for future international understanding at a time when the worst economic crisis since the war is ramping up racism and xenophobia across the world. The report made the front page of many newspapers, including this one. It was extensively covered everywhere – everywhere except for the entire national output of the BBC.

Newsnight’s people were enthusiastic, but on the late afternoon of the intended broadcast, they suddenly changed their tune.

Extremist literature was available in the mosques, and in some cases still is. The mosques could not dissociate themselves from the literature and, in most cases, did not even try to: they jumped on the receipts instead.

One mosque insisted that the next-door bookshop selling extreme stuff had nothing to do with it, yet the extremist books in question which the shop sells are by a former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia (author of a famous essay in which he literally asserted that the Earth is flat) who was a founding sponsor of the mosque!

I don’t blame Newsnight for reporting questions about receipts, though I deplore their methods. I do blame them for trying to kill the much, much bigger story about the hate that is being preached in our country.

The researchers that Policy Exchange used to find the extreme literature were all Muslims – no one else could pass unnoticed in a potentially hostile environment.

Because their safety was and is threatened, the think-tank protects their anonymity.

On air, Newsnight revealed where some of them were.

Yesterday an Islamist website repeated this and called for supporters to help hunt them down. The BBC has unintentionally exposed them to the risk of harm.

What these brave Muslims undeniably found was evidence of widespread, obnoxious material that is a risk to decent Muslims and to British social order.

The BBC chose, in effect, to side with their extreme opponents and to cover up the report, because of an obsession about a few pieces of paper.

Why Fred Nile should leave Australia …

I think Fred Nile is a threat to our liberal democracy. Here’s why.

Fred Nile has drawn the line. He has declared Australia to be a Christian country. He has also declared that we shouldn’t allow schools that reject Christian doctrines such as the divinity of Christ and the idea that Christ is the Son of God.

On that basis, I challenge Fred Nile to call for the closure of Moriah College. I call upon Rev Nile to hold a public meeting at St Ives which will support the closure of Masada College.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — After the United States has spent more than $5 billion in a largely failed effort to bolster the Pakistani military effort against Al Qaeda and the Taliban, some American officials now acknowledge that there were too few controls over the money. The strategy to improve the Pakistani military, they said, needs to be completely revamped.

In interviews in Islamabad and Washington, Bush administration and military officials said they believed that much of the American money was not making its way to frontline Pakistani units. Money has been diverted to help finance weapons systems designed to counter India, not Al Qaeda or the Taliban, the officials said, adding that the United States has paid tens of millions of dollars in inflated Pakistani reimbursement claims for fuel, ammunition and other costs.

“I personally believe there is exaggeration and inflation,” said a senior American military official who has reviewed the program, referring to Pakistani requests for reimbursement. “Then, I point back to the United States and say we didn’t have to give them money this way.”

Pakistani officials say they are incensed at what they see as American ingratitude for Pakistani counterterrorism efforts that have left about 1,000 Pakistani soldiers and police officers dead. They deny that any overcharging has occurred.

The $5 billion was provided through a program known as Coalition Support Funds, which reimburses Pakistan for conducting military operations to fight terrorism. Under a separate program, Pakistan receives $300 million per year in traditional American military financing that pays for equipment and training.

Civilian opponents of President Pervez Musharraf say he used the reimbursements to prop up his government. One European diplomat in Islamabad said the United States should have been more cautious with its aid.

“I wonder if the Americans have not been taken for a ride,” said the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

FRIENDS of Rashid Rauf, the man wanted in Britain for last year’s Al-Qaeda plot to blow up transatlantic airliners, believe that he did not escape from custody last weekend but was kidnapped by Pakistan’s military intelligence agency (ISI). They fear he may be shot.

Rauf was arrested in Pakistan in August last year at the same time as 25 men were held in Britain after police uncovered an alleged plot to blow up 12 airliners flying to the United States from Heathrow and Gatwick.

The arrests led to widespread changes in airport security and a ban on liquids being taken onto planes in hand luggage.

Since then Rauf has been held with other Al-Qaeda suspects in Pakistan’s highest-security unit in Rawalpindi until his “escape” last weekend.

The Pakistan government has blamed junior policemen escorting Rauf back to jail after a court hearing in Islamabad where he was fighting moves to extradite him to Britain in connection with the murder of an uncle.

The officers had allowed him to stop for lunch at a McDonald’s restaurant and later in the journey permitted him to pray at a mosque. His handcuffs were removed to allow him to pray freely. When the guards entered the mosque to check on the prisoner, he had escaped through another door.

In September of 2005, Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal purchased 5.46 per cent of Class B voting shares in News Corp, the company that owns Fox News and a number of other media and entertainment entities. This had replaced the three per cent stake in Class A non-voting shares bin Talal had previously held through his investment corporation, Kingdom Holding Company (KHC).

With his newfound voting rights, bin Talal stated his intention of supporting Rupert Murdoch, the principal owner of News Corp, helping Murdoch to stay in power and avoid hostile takeover by other interested investors. Some have said that this was like making a deal with the devil, as Murdoch has been left vulnerable to the whims of an individual that has been involved in despicable causes.

In April of 2002, bin Talal had donated $27 million during a Saudi telethon that was raising money for the families of suicide bombers. As well, he had given $500,000 to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) to be used towards the distribution and propagation of a set of Islamist books for American libraries. The set included Jamal Badawi’s Gender Equity in Islam, which sanctions the beating of women by their husbands, and a version of the Quran, Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s The Meaning of THE HOLY QURAN, which has been banned by the Los Angeles school system.

Utilizing his position of power within Fox News (today, he is the second largest shareholder), bin Talal has worked to influence programming at the station. An infamous example of this was reported in a December 2005 article found in WorldNetDaily, stating:

During the violent street protests in France one month ago, the prince said, Fox News ran a banner at the bottom of the screen that said “Muslim riots.”

“I picked up the phone and called Murdoch … [and told him] these are not Muslim riots, these are riots out of poverty,” al-Walid said.

“Within 30 minutes, the title was changed from Muslim riots to civil riots.”

This incident was precisely the type of scenario that then-Mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani tried to avoid, when after the 9/11 attacks, he rejected a $10 million check from bin Talal for the renovation of New York, that was attached to statements made by the Prince critical of the United States’ relationship to Israel. The question now is how many more incidents, such as the one concerning the French Muslim riots, have occured without the notice of the American public? And how far has bin Talal’s influence been able to reach?

Dozens of people packed out a council meeting to express their concerns over the plans for a two-minute long call to prayer to be issued three times a day, saying that it could drown out the traditional sound of church bells.

But a spokesman for the Central Mosque said that Muslim’s also have the right to summon worshippers.

Dr Mark Huckster, who lives in Stanton Road and works at East Oxford hospice Helen House, told the Oxford Mail: “The proposal to issue a prayer call is very un-neighbourly, especially in a crowded urban space such as Oxford.

“I have lived in the Middle East and a prayer call has a very different feel to church bells and I personally found the noise extremely unpleasant, rather disturbing and very alien to the western mindset.”

He added: “If an evangelical Christian preacher proposed issuing sermons three times a day at full volume there would be an outcry.

“There could be a sense of ghettoisation of East Oxford. Cowley Road would have a Muslim flavour and could become a Muslim ghetto which is contrary to what we want in a multicultural society.”

Muslims driving Christians out of Bethlehem, but media outlets choose to blame Israel

Ah, Christmas in Bethlehem. Manger Square is ablaze with colorful lights. The weather is usually a bit chilly. Aggressive merchants bombard passersby with “special sales” on all kinds of cedar wood statues and religious carvings.

And like clockwork, the mainstream media descend upon this city every year to ignore rampant Muslim intimidation of Christians and instead blast Israel – often with completely inaccurate information – for ruining Christmas and for the drastic decline of Christianity in one of the holiest cities for that religion.

Take a widely circulated piece by McClatchy Newspapers writers Dion Nissenbaum and Cliff Churgin.

The piece, published last week, cites Bethlehem’s dwindling Christian population and paints a picture that squarely blames Israel.

“For generations, the Holy Land Arts Museum (in Bethlehem) has been selling olivewood manger scenes to thousands of pilgrims wanting souvenirs from the biblical birthplace of Jesus,” starts the piece.

“Gone is the olivewood stable shielding the baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph. In its place, looming over the angelic family, are an Israeli watchtower and three towering sections of an adjoining wall.”

Outright lying, the McClatchy Newspapers piece stated Bethlehem “remains largely isolated from the outside world by Israel’s 25-foot-tall concrete walls, part of Israel’s separation barrier.”

The piece implied the wall caused the crash of Bethlehem’s economy and prompted Christians to flee. Similar articles were churned out by Reuters, the BBC online and scores of local newspapers.

ABC News, for example, chimes in: “The (Israeli) wall has cast a shadow over this famous West Bank town.”

Now let’s get our facts straight. Bethlehem is not surrounded by any wall.

Israel in 2002 built a fence in the area where northern Bethlehem interfaces with Jerusalem. A tiny segment of that barrier, facing a major Israeli roadway, is a concrete wall, which Israel says is meant to prevent gunmen from shooting at Israeli motorists.

The fence was constructed after the outbreak of the Palestinian Intifada, or terror war, launched in 2000 after late PLO Leader Yasser Arafat turned down an Israeli offer of a Palestinian state, returning to the Middle East to liberate Palestine with violence.

Scores of deadly suicide bombings and shooting attacks against Israelis were planned in Bethlehem and carried out by Bethlehem-area terrorists.

At one point during the period of just 30 days in 2002, at least 14 shootings were perpetuated by Bethlehem cells of al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terrorists, killing two Israelis and wounding six.

Many times Muslim gunmen in the Bethlehem area reportedly took positions in civilian homes in the hilltops of Christian Beit Jala, which straddles Bethlehem. Beit Jala afforded the terrorists a clear firing line at southern sections of Jerusalem and at a major Israeli highway down below, drawing Israeli military raids and the eventual building of the security barrier there.

Is this barrier causing Bethlehem’s Christians to flee, as the mainstream media claim?

Simple demographic facts will answer this question. Israel built the barrier five years ago. But Bethlehem’s Christian population started to drastically decline in 1995, the very year Arafat’s Palestinian Authority took over the holy Christian city in line with the US-backed Oslo Accords.

And if you need evidence for that, start with any number of Israeli hitchhikers picked up and murdered, or those two Israeli boys beaten to death in a cave, or those two Israeli reservists who took a wrong turn into Ramallah and were lynched, as those who killed them and gouged out their eyes held up their bloody hands to a crowd below hysterical with its own happiness and hate, or those four little Jewish girls sitting in their car, methodically shot to death, one by one, by one more brave hero — hailed as a hero, held up as a model — of the “Palestinian resistance.”

BETHLEHEM – Muslim street peddlers here bombarded tourists with discounted souvenirs in Manger Square – the hub of Bethlehem’s holiday activity – setting up shop in front of Christian stores some of whose owners complained their businesses were being hijacked.

“Tourism is up this year. Christians are visiting from all over. They come out of the Church of the Nativity and before they arrive at my store they’ve already been approached by a half-dozen Muslim vendors selling the same stuff but cheaper,” said the manager of one shop situated across from the Church of the Nativity alongside Manger Square.

Hate preacher Omar Bakri, who is barred from Britain, is calling on Brits to boycott Christmas.

Using the internet to post a rant against the festive season, Bakri claims Christmas should be “completely forbidden”.

In another chilling post the radical cleric said Christmas Day would be the perfect day to launch a terror attack on the UK.

He said: “To have Christmas tree, visit so-called Christmas Father – that is completely forbidden.

“Make sure you do not watch TV. Do not let them hear jingle bells. Do not send your children on Christmas trip.”

Bakri’s previous vile rants included his belief that the British public and the Government were responsible for the 7/7 London bombings.

In 2005 he was excluded by the then Home Secretary Charles Clarke from returning to Britain.

The move came after Bakri reportedly said he had left Britain for good and intended to set up home in the Lebanon.

He was duly arrested by Lebanese security forces.

Bakri, 46, was the London-based spiritual leader of the extremist group Al-Muhajiroun while claiming benefits from social services.

Although the group had supposedly disbanded, Prime Minister Tony Blair said that its successor organisation would be outlawed.

The Syrian-born preacher moved to the UK in 1985 after being deported from Saudi Arabia because of his membership of a banned group there.

In 1996 he created Al-Muhajiroun (The Eyes and Ears of the Muslims), which praised the ‘Magnificent 19’ hijackers after September 11.

In October 2004, he announced he was disbanding Al-Muhajiroun in the interests of “unity in the Muslim world”.

But soon afterwards he led a demonstration outside the US Embassy in London in which protesters chanted the name of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and torched an American flag.

Bakri has seven children who were born in the UK and relied on benefits for the past 19 years.

DAVID HICKS’S mental condition is so fragile that – only five days before his scheduled release from jail – he suffers from agoraphobia and retreats to the kind of solitary confinement he endured for five years in Guantanamo Bay.

The former Muslim extremist has suffered panic attacks and has ventured into the sunshine, in the prison yard, only once since his return to Australia in May this year to serve the balance of his nine-month sentence at Yatala Labour Prison in Adelaide. He could not cope and preferred the enclosed prison and artificial lighting, where he felt more safe.

“He tried to go out but he just said everything closed in on him,” his father, Terry Hicks, told the Herald.

The long night of the ‘shrinking horizons’

Hicks’s agoraphobia and panic attacks are hallmarks of prisoners who have spent prolonged periods in confined isolation. Professor Mullen said he would be suffering psychological damage from his trauma, which included being imprisoned in a container in the hot sun, believing he had been left there to die.

“Your horizons shrink and shrink and your world becomes your cell and everything outside of it becomes increasingly unfamiliar and frightening,” Professor Mullen said. “They become not just de-skilled but they lose all of the ease with which we deal with strangers and strange situations. Take them out in the street and they become terrified. Give them a simple task to do like buying something in a shop and it is just overwhelming, difficult and confusing.”

Haneef ‘won’t return unless safety guaranteed’

Former Gold Coast doctor Mohamed Haneef says he is still angry with Australian authorities about the way they treated him.

Earlier this year, Dr Haneef was arrested on a terrorism-related charge and spent two weeks in custody.

The charge was later dropped but former immigration minister Kevin Andrews cancelled his visa on character grounds.

Last week a full bench of the Federal Court upheld an earlier decision to reinstate the visa.

Dr Haneef says he misses his job at the Gold Coast Hospital, but he will not come back to Australia from India without the approval of his wife and family and a safety guarantee from the authorities.

“If my family decides I would go back there, we would need reassurance from the authorities who are there that there wouldn’t be any harm to us or any problems in our safety,” he said.
