Even atheists will pray if they’re in a troubled aircraft. But you don’t generally expect the pilot and co-pilot to join in:

An Italian court has jailed a Tunisian pilot who paused to pray instead of taking emergency measures before ditching his plane, killing 16 people.

A fuel gauge fault was partly to blame for the crash off Sicily in 2005 but judges convicted Chafik Garbi of manslaughter, jailing him for 10 years.

Six others, including the co-pilot and head of the airline Tuninter, were jailed for between eight and 10 years.

ROME (AP)Â â€”Â Italy said Thursday it is pulling out of a U.N. conference on racism â€” the latest blow to a meeting seen by many Western governments as marred by Muslim attempts to attack Israel and shield Islam from criticism.

Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Italy has withdrawn its delegation from the preparatory negotiations ahead of the so-called Durban II conference due to “aggressive and anti-Semitic statements”Â in the draft of the event’s final document.

(ANSA) – Lampedusa, February 18 – Immigrants rioted at an expulsion centre on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa Tuesday, setting fire to parts of the facility.

Police said the migrants used mattresses and waste paper to start the fire after failing to break down the centre’s gates. One of the buildings in the centre was destroyed, they said.

(ANSA) – Rome, January 21 – Italy is moving to prevent any more recurrences of mass Muslim prayers in front of Catholic places of worship following incidents in Milan, Bologna and Rome this month.Â

All three incidents took place during protest marches against the Israeli offensive in Gaza, but a mass pray-in in front of the Duomo in Milan grabbed the most headlines. Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said Wednesday he was working on a directive that would improve ”control” during demonstrations, without revealing full details of the measure.

”I have prepared a guideline that will be sent to all city prefects so that what happened in front of the Duomo in Milan will not be repeated,” Maroni told parliament.

(IsraelNN.com) A paper fuse on an explosive device made from a small camping gas canister apparently was lit, but burned out before it could do any damage at the entrance of the Chabad House in Florence, Italy, over the weekend, according to theÂ Jewish Telegraphic Agency. The device was reportedly discovered during the day Saturday but not reported to police until Saturday night after Shabbat.

Also on Saturday, thousands of people, many of them Muslim, staged a march in Rome which included placards showing swastikas superimposed on the Star of David. About 300 people staged a counterdemonstration in Rome’s historic Jewish ghetto neighborhood.

Last week, red paint was thrown at theÂ front of the synagogue in Pisa.

Two Moroccans arrested in Italy yesterday wanted to blow up the Milan Cathedral on Christmas.Â They hoped an attack during the busy holiday would cost dozens of lives.Â This according to tapped phone calls, reports La Repubblica.

The two belonged to an Islamic terror cell which had been followed by the Italian police already for months.Â “The plot was discovered yet before the suspects could get explosives,” says the Italian minister of Internal Affairs, Roberto Maroni, in response.

Rachid Ilhami (31) and Abdelkader Ghafir (43) were arrested in Giussano, a city 25km away from Milan.Â The detectives gathered from tapped phone calls and confiscated computer files that the two also prepared attacks on a supermarket and a police bureau.Â They are arrested on suspicion of terrorism and eventual cooperation with al-Qaeda.

Ilhami had been living since he was ten in Italy.Â He is married and has two children.Â He worked as a blacksmith and in his free time worked in a center for peace activities, in the area of prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s villa, according to Corriere della Sera.

Cagliari, 18 Sept. (AKI) – More than 85 illegal immigrants being held at a temporary reception centre started a riot overnight on Thursday in the city of Elmas near Cagliari on the Italian island of Sardinia.

Most of the rioters began destroying the building and furnishings in order to prevent an imminent deportation order, media reports said. About 50 police in riot gear and paramilitary Carabinieri police officers arrived at the scene.

Most of the immigrants were of Algerian origin.Â

There have not been any arrests, but the police headquarters have asked the interior ministry to transfer the illegal immigrants to another temporary holding centre.

ROME (Reuters) – Italy’s Northern League, allies of centre-right Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, want to limit the growth of Islam in the centre of world Catholicism by blocking the construction of mosques through strict new regulations.

Muslim immigrants using Italy as a route into Europe already get a foretaste of the mistrust with which many Europeans view their religion, with many projects for mosques and prayer halls already blocked by the opposition of local Italian residents.

But if the anti-immigrant Northern League pushes its bill through parliament — where Berlusconi’s coalition has a strong majority — Italy will soon have a new law effectively blocking the construction of new mosques in much of the country.

Fearing the advent of “Eurabia”, the League has used its control of Berlusconi’s interior ministry since helping him to power to push through tough new laws against illegal immigrants.

It has now turned its attention to the newcomers’ religion, emboldened by polls showing many Italians mistrust Muslims and a third do not want a mosque in their neighborhood.
