Da’awa means proselytizing. And the chances are good: the imams have a captive clientele. Converting inmates to Islam works like a charm. This has been  an alarming development for  a long time.

Nothing to worry: all we need is more halal burgers, prayer rugs, Islamic clerics, toilets and foot-baths that point towards Mecca. Add to this a free supply of Korans, fresh and untouched  by filthy kafir hands, and everything will be just swell. Right?

There have been tens of thousands of jihadist attacks, dating back to the time of Muhammad. These “highly-motivated but poorly trained individuals” have always been a very effective method of Mohammedan warfare, from the ancient ‘hashishin’ (better known as assassin) to todays suicide bombers.  But the increasing numbers of lone jihadists who suffer from ‘Sudden Jihad Syndrome‘  can’t  be a threat to us, because they are not members of al Qaeda, so their obvious Islamic motives are denied by our learned elites, who would tell you  anything to go back to sleep.

UK: Muslim prisoners intimidating non-Muslim prisoners, getting preferential treatment

And prison authorities are afraid to cross them. Why? Because there are sooo many. […] Islamic inmate Abu Dira wrote to lag magazine Inside Time about the X Factor protest at the Worcestershire jail.He said: “Many Muslims in Long Lartin have handed back their televisions, as they are viewed as nothing more than a distraction to religious study.

”I do not envisage hordes of crying Muslims lamenting the loss of X Factor.”

The inmate also blasted plans to fight Islamic extremism by flooding the prison library with books from moderates, saying no-one would read them, “let alone accept the viewpoint of those individuals who align themselves with occupational forces”.

Figures revealed by the Sunday Mercury last year show the Muslim population inside Long Lartin has doubled in just two years, with a quarter of all prisoners now followers of Islam.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that extremists held in the maximum security terror detainee unit are being given fresh sheets after every cell search by drug dogs – so that their religion is not offended.

Yet non-Muslim prisoners have complained that Islamic inmates are being offered preferential treatment as others are not offered clean sheets.…

And a former Long Lartin prison officer has also claimed non-Muslim prisoners are being intimidated for refusing to abide by unofficial rules imposed by Islamic gangs, about eating pork and listening to Western music. One Christian prisoner was even stabbed for refusing to read the Quran, she claimed.

“Prison officers feel helpless against this situation,” she said. “It seemed to me like the prison authorities were scared to upset the detainees so they had to be seen to protect them – even if they were in the wrong.”…

UK: Jailed rapist convert to Islam scolds another inmate with boiling oil, because he would not convert

A jailed killer poured boiling oil over another inmate because he refused to convert to Islam.

Jamaile Morally, 26 – sentenced to life as part of a gang that raped, tortured and murdered a teenage girl and left another for dead – led two other inmates in carrying out the attack.

They boiled up the oil in a kitchen at high-security Whitemoor Prison, March, Cambridgeshire, and poured it over Durwayne Martin, 26, scalding his neck, shoulders and back.

A prison source said: “There has been a real problem of extremist Muslims trying to convert other inmates to Islam.”

After reporting on the devout Muslim Chaplain who smuggled boxcutters into prison and was a convicted murderer, I thought readers should see this missive I received from the son of an ordained Catholic Deacon, a full-time prison Chaplin working in the system for over 20 years. I vetted and researched the man. He’s the real deal and of the utmost moral character. I am removing names, as I wish him to lead a long and productive life.

The Deacon’s only mistake is calling them radicals. They are pious.

Pamela, After reading the story of the Muslim Chaplin in NYC smuggling box cutter blades to inmates I forwarded the story to my father. My father, an ordained Catholic Deacon, has been a full-time prison Chaplin for over two decades. About 8-9 years ago he was elevated to the position of head Chaplain of a brand  facility in XXXXX. As you can imagine he has spent a great deal of time working with Imams and Muslim inmates throughout his career. Anyway, after I sent him the aforementioned story he responded with a plethora of information I thought might interest you.

The prisons have become as holy as the mosque in the recruitment of jihadis. These are breeding grounds for soldiers for allah, much like the mosques and the madrassas.

Zul-Qarnain Shahid, 58, a Muslim cleric with the city Department of Corrections, was busted Wednesday for trying to sneak three razors and a pair of scissors into the Tombs.

A Muslim jail chaplain who is also a convicted murderer brought razors and a pair of scissors into one of the city’s most dangerous lockups, officials said.

Sources said Abdu-Shahid – who used to go by the name Paul Pitts – was convicted of a 1976 murder in Manhattan. He served 13 years in prison and was on parole until 2001, state records show.

Muslim chaplain ‘smuggled’ box cutters into jail By REUVEN BLAU and DAN MANGAN NY Post

A Muslim chaplain for the city Department of Correction was arrested this morning for allegedly trying to smuggle in three box-cutters to a lower Manhattan jail.

The imam, Imam Zul-Qarnain Shahid, has worked as a DOC jail chaplain for three years, according to department sources.

Several sources said Shahid was caught this morning attempting to bring three box-cutters into the jail known as the Tombs during a visit there. It was not known why he was visiting the jail.

What is interesting (!) is what follows – the writers bring in a totally unrelated “Rabbi” story.

A DOC chaplain assigned to the Tombs – politically connected rabbi Leib Glanz – resigned last year after The Post exclusively revealed that he had organized a bar mitzvah party within the jail’s walls for the son of an inmate. The bar mitzvah featured catered food and a live band, as well as dozens of non-inmate guests.

Mostly Muslim Immigrants Make Up 37% of Italy Prison Population

(ANSAmed) – NAPLES, JUNE 17 – According to data provided by the ISMU Foundation, an independent and autonomous scientific body promoting studies, research, and initiatives on multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society, 37% of the prison population in Italy is made up of foreigners. The group reports that almost 22,000 foreign inmates were counted in Italy’s prisons at the beginning of 2009. Of these, 6,000 are awaiting trial. Inmates making appeals and claims total 7,000, while 8,000 have been sentenced. For the Italian population, 0.7 per 1,000 individuals are in prison, while there is an eightfold increase for foreigners in Italy, with 5.5 per 1,000 individuals in prison. On January 1 2009, reports showed that the group with the most individuals in Italy’s prisons are Moroccan nationals (4,700), followed by Romanians (2,700), Albanians (2,600), and Tunisians (2,500). For the Romanian population, the percentage of the population in prison is relatively low (3.5 per 1,000), while the Albanian population has a higher percentage (6.0 per 1,000), as well as Moroccans (11.8 per 1,000), and Tunisians (25 per 1,000).

Salahuddin Mustafa Muhammad, the imam at the Masjid al-Ikhlas, a mosque in Newburgh, N.Y., has spent more than two decades ministering to the Muslim faithful in prisons, serving as a chaplain at the nearby Fishkill Correctional Facility. There, he leads prayers and offers counseling.

“Most people are searching,” he said of the men he encounters in prison. “So they decide on Islam and that becomes their life.”

But last week, Mr. Muhammad found himself an accidental actor of sorts in the latest case of what the authorities call a homegrown terror plot, one in which four ex-convicts were accused of trying to blow up two Bronx synagogues and attack military aircraft. The plot, the authorities say, began when one of the men met a government informant at Mr. Muhammad’s mosque roughly a year ago.With at least two of the men appearing to be prison converts to Islam, the case has in certain circles evoked an old debate about the role prison might play as an incubator of extremist ideas among Muslims, and it put Mr. Muhammad in the position of confronting that debate in a very personal way.

Mr. Muhammad said his years working with Muslims in prison had turned up little actual evidence that many or any of them became radicalized behind bars.

“I don’t hear any of that wild stuff,” he said. “And if I did hear it, I would stomp it out. It is totally un-Islamic.”

The four men accused of plotting to blow up synagogues and shoot down a plane all did stretches in state prisons – a major breeding ground for Islamic radicalization. 

At least two of the suspects, James Cromitie and Onta Williams, entered the system as Baptists and were paroled as Muslims.

The concern about prisons incubating jihadists has been heightened in the debate over releasing Guantanamo terror suspects to facilities across the U.S.

FBI Director Robert Mueller has called America’s prisons “fertile ground for extremists.”

A 2006 study called “Out of the Shadows” found “tight-knit communities of Muslims in prison are ripe for radicalization, and could easily become terrorist cells.”…

In the featured article at Human Events this morning, I discuss jihadist recruitment in prisons, which should be a chief concern of law enforcement officials in the wake of the Bronx synagogue jihad plot, and the implications of all this for the Gitmo inmates.

Should we bring Guantanamo inmates to U.S. prisons, as the Obama administration has proposed? FBI Director Robert Mueller doesn’t think that it would be wise to house such prisoners even in the ultra-high security Supermax facility: “The concerns we have about individuals who may support terrorism being in the United States run from concerns about providing financing, radicalizing others.” Radicalizing others is a real possibility: two of the four Muslims, James “Abdul Rahman” Cromitie and Onta “Hamza” Williams, who were arrested last week for plotting to blow up synagogues in the Bronx and shoot down an airplane, converted to Islam while in prison. When they went to prison, both were Baptists.This really shouldn’t be surprising to anyone. Mueller sounded the warning some time ago, saying that America’s prisons were “fertile ground for extremists.” And a new Rand Corporation study, released just this month, has found that Islamic jihad groups have long targeted prisons as key centers for recruitment.

Jihadists are radicalizing Muslims in prisons outside the U.S., in Europe and elsewhere, through aggressive indoctrination and recruitment. A new RAND Corporation report, “Radicalization or Rehabilitation: Understanding the Challenge of Extremist and Radicalized Prisoners,” cites prisons as a key venue for Islamist recruitment.
Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, a former inmate and mentor of the late al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia commander Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, describes jihadist tactics in prisons in the radical periodical Nida ul-Islam to include:

* Refusal to cooperate in the prison’s administrative regime, intimidating prison staff, and attacking guards.

* Using prison visits to communicate with followers in the outside world.

* Holding alternative Friday prayers to draw other prisoners away from the official prison services.

* Producing and distributing ideological literature within, and for dissemination beyond, the prison population.

The RAND report also notes that much of the literature on Islam in prison libraries is specifically Islamist. Fundamentalist authors like the 13th-century figure Ibn Taymiyya and the 20th-century writer Sayyid Qutb are prevalent and seem especially attractive to prison readers since these men spent time in jail themselves, making them sympathetic figures to these captive audiences in Europe’s prisons.

Governments are trying to counter the spread of Islamism in prisons. The RAND report assesses three programs in Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. The religious rehabilitation group (RRG) in Singapore attempts to rehab arrested members of Jemaah Islamiya with counter-Islamist material produced by Islamic scholars and other experts. Moreover, relatives of inmates receive financial assistance and are counseled, while their children are provided with special education.

Psychologists in the Prison Service will try to ‘cure’ extremist Muslim inmates of their political beliefs with controversial therapies similar to those used to ‘de-programme’ members of religious cults.

The experimental treatments are being developed by a special Extremism Unit set up by the Ministry of Justice in January last year, The Mail on Sunday has discovered.

Sources say the therapy forms part of a wide-ranging strategy to combat Islamic extremism in Britain’s jails.

There are 90 Muslim prisoners serving time for terrorist offences, and the Ministry fears that, if left unchallenged, their violent, jihadist interpretation of Islam will spread.

About 11 per cent of prisoners are Muslim – three-and-a-half times the proportion in the UK population.

In maximum security ‘Category A’ jails such as Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire – the subject today of an exclusive report in Live magazine based on unprecedented access to both prisoners and staff – they make up 35 per cent of the inmates, and have converted numerous other prisoners to Islam.

In Whitemoor the 150 Muslim inmates include 39 who have converted in the jail since early last year. In some cases, officers believe converts have been subjected to bullying and changed their faith because they felt vulnerable.
