Saudi man gets four months in prison and 90 lashes for kissing a woman in a mall

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — A Saudi court has convicted a man and sentenced him to four months in prison and 90 lashes for kissing a woman in a mall.The government-owned daily Al-Yom reported on Thursday that Saudi religious police arrested the man and two women after they were seen on mall cameras “engaging in immoral movements in front of other shoppers.”

The report says the man, who is in his 20s, was seen with a woman “sitting on one of the chairs, exchanging kisses and hugs.” It’s unclear what the other woman was doing…

Saudi Woman Arrested for Planning to Burn her Veil

On April 24, the Saudi authorities arrested a woman for announcing on a liberal Internet forum that she planned to burn her veil in the street in downtown Riyadh. According to the report, the authorities also destroyed the woman’s house.

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s top religious authority yesterday denounced terror attacks as un-Islamic and condemned the killing of civilians, saying such attacks have nothing to do with the Muslim religion.

Islam doesn’t recognize the concept of “civilians…”

“Terrorism is criminal and spills the blood of innocents,” said Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh, the kingdom’s senior most cleric. “It attacks security, spreads terror among the people and creates problems for society … Such acts are forbidden by Islamic law,” he said in a statement reported on the official SPA news agency. “It is necessary to fight against the attempts by some to attach terrorism to Islam and Muslims with the goal of distorting the religion and to assail its leadership role in the world,” he added. The statement was for a conference on international cooperation in fighting terrorism and its financing, to open Saturday in Riyadh.

We posted the jihad-terror exhortations from the Koran and the hadith here many times. The mufti calls for religiously mandated lying. For him, the enemy are those who “assail the leadership role of Islam in the world”, in other words those who oppose the spread of Islam. That’s us, people….

A recent poll in the country showed that in the past 20 years, the divorce rate in the country has risen from 25% to 60%.

Malaysian woman married to Saudi sends SOS to family over “serious physical abuse at the hands of her husband”

From my own experience:

In the seventies I lived in Bangkok.  I often went back and forth between Thailand and Europe, with stopovers in Dubai. On one of these flights from London to the Far East I met two pretty British chicks, early twenties, who were very exited about their upcoming marriages with Arabs in the Emirates.

I tried to warn them, talk them out of it, but all I got was the old “they’re not like that, they’re just like us, they re educated in England, they are really nice…”

I gave them my name card, and much to my surprise about a year later I received an SOS call from one of them, asking me for all kinds of help, which I was in no position to offer.

I gave their names to  the British Embassy in BKK, but that’s about it. What more could I do? There are thousands like them locked up in the palaces of Arabia, who are at the mercy of their sheik’s.  What can be done about it? What should be done about it?

Recently, Saudi women activists, led by Saudi Princess Jawaher bint Jalawi, launched a campaign called “My Guardian Knows What’s Best For Me,” calling for redefining the term “guardian” and for opposing calls by those with liberal views to improve the status of women in Saudi Arabia.

Princess Jawaher’s campaign is a response to the struggle launched in July 2009 by Saudi women’s rights activist Wajeha Al-Huweidar calling for abolishing the mahram (“guardian”) law, which requires women to obtain the approval of a male relative for nearly any move they make in their lives. As part of her campaign, Al-Huweidar, together with her colleagues, went to the King Fahd Bridge, which joins Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, and demanded to leave the country without a guardian’s approval.

WASHINGTON – Saudi Arabia on Friday sharply rejected American calls for gestures toward Israel, a central component of US efforts to pave the way for peace talks.

“Incrementalism and a step-by-step approach has not and – we believe – will not achieve peace. Temporary security, confidence-building measures will also not bring peace,” Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said at a State Department press conference.

“What is required is a comprehensive approach that defines the final outcome at the outset and launches into negotiations over final status issues: borders, Jerusalem, water, refugees and security.”
