Saudi Arabia made headlines recently when two young Saudi women, Reem, 21, and Nouf, 19 were murdered by their brother who was attempting to restore his family’s honor.  What had the women done to dishonor their family?  They had spoken to men in public. 

Saudi Arabian law prohibits men and women from mingling in public.  (A few other Saudi laws include: amputating the limbs of robbers, flogging those who are drunk, and prohibiting women from driving.)

The Saudi Arabian religious police enforce the law that proscribes men and women from ‘mixing’ in public, and a women’s rights group is blaming the police for this murder: had the women not been arrested, the brother wouldn’t have been compelled to slay his sisters, who he thought were shaming his family.  Reem and Nouf’s father was present during the murder, and he approved his son’s actions. wives31Fellow Americans: Prepare to receive the entire female population of Pakistan sometime soon. And that’s just for starters. I don’t oppose this—but I honestly don’t know if we can economically afford to do it. Given the recession/depression, I rather doubt we can. But get ready for something like this to happen anyway.

Today, the Obama administration reversed a Bush-era policy and opened the way for “foreign women who are victims of severe domestic beatings and sexual abuse to receive asylum in the United States.” The battered women will have to meet “strict conditions for asylum” and will also have to show that “domestic abuse is widely tolerated in their country…that they could not find protection from institutions at home or by moving to another place within their own country.”

Book to be published about Islamic oppression of women — fear of Muslim outrage

* That’s before the book is even published. Now watch this space. The book will probably never be  published, because the usual 1.5 gazillion Muslims will go apeshit, but we can’t blame them all for the tiny minority of extremists that will firebomb the publishers and assassinate the writer, because Islam is a religion of peace, and besides, Islam is not a monolith and all that jazz, and those who insult the RoP must be killed….

There is no Muslim outrage about this book yet, but the fear of it is palpable enough for the Sunday Times to write an article about it. And if that outrage does indeed materialize, this will be yet another case, as here and here and here, of Muslims becoming outraged over accurate representations of Islamic texts and teachings. “Fears of Muslim anger over religious book,” by Christine Toomey in The Sunday Times, May 31 (thanks to Twostellas):

An academic book about religious attitudes to women is to be published this week despite concerns it could cause a backlash among Muslims because it criticises the prophet Muhammad for taking a nine-year-old girl as his third wife.

Why is there no Muslim backlash against the Bukhari hadith collection (the collection of Islamic tradition that Muslims consider most reliable), which reports the same thing in no less than five places? Find it at 5.58.234; 5.58.236; 7.62.64;7.62.65; and 7.62.88.

The book, entitled Does God Hate Women?, suggests that Muhammad’s marriage to a child called Aisha is “not entirely compatible with the idea that he had the best interests of women at heart”.

Not entirely, indeed. And the response Muslim women deserve is not outrage at the book, but reform where child marriage is rampant, and reform of other elements of Islam that oppress women. But nothing seems much less likely.

It also says that Cherie Blair, wife of the former prime minister, was “incorrect” when she defended Islam in a lecture by claiming “it is not laid down in the Koran that women can be beaten by their husbands and their evidence should be devalued as it is in some Islamic courts”….

Indeed, she was wrong. Wife-beating is in Qur’an 4:34 and the devaluing of testimony is in Qur’an 2:282. So now there will be a “backlash” because truth rather than falsehood is revealed?

CNN: Hired Muslim Shill Denies Wife-beating Verses in the Koran

*  Not for the first time. Its just amazing how eager the Western media is to propagate falsehoods like this. CNN along with the BBC are clearly totally infiltrated and have thus become tools for Islamic spin:

Nothing. Not a thing. Except, well, Qur’an 4:34:

Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great.

In mainstream Islamic practice, the Qur’an is Allah’s own words, eternal, and direct — not simply inspired in its human transmitters who were influenced by their particular time and place. In the case of 4:34, this fact spells disaster for women’s rights in letter and in spirit: The text itself tells men to beat their wives. The fact that it is the third in multiple steps does not mitigate the fact that, after a man believes he has jumped through the appropriate hoops, the Qur’an says to hit your wife.

wives51The Qur’an (4:34) tells men to beat their disobedient wives after first warning them and then sending them to sleep in separate beds. This is, of course, an extremely controversial verse, and many Islamic spokesmen and others in the West deny that it has anything to do with wife-beating, so it is worth noting how several translators render the key word here, وَاضْرِبُوهُنَّ, waidriboohunna.

Pickthall: “and scourge them”
Yusuf Ali: “(And last) beat them (lightly)”
Al-Hilali/Khan: “(and last) beat them (lightly, if it is useful)”
Shakir: “and beat them”
Sher Ali: “and chastise them”
Khalifa: “then you may (as a last alternative) beat them”
Arberry: “and beat them”
Rodwell: “and scourge them”
Sale: “and chastise them”
Asad: “then beat them”

Laleh Bakhtiar, in a new translation that has received wide publicity, translates it as “go away from them.” However, in light of this unanimity among the translators, both Muslim and non-Muslim, this seems difficult to sustain – all of these authorities got the passage wrong until Bakhtiar? But her impulse is understandable, as many Muslims today regard this verse with acute embarrassment. Muhammad Asad adduces numerous traditions in which Muhammad “forbade the beating of any woman,” concluding that wife-beating is “barely permissible, and should preferably be avoided.”

Why must it be taken into account? Why can’t American and European officials say to Muslims, “You’re in our country now, and you’re going to abide by our rules”?

Islamic law regarding rape requires four males Muslim witnesses to establish that it happened, as per Qur’an 24:13. Women’s rights groups accordingly ought to be resisting its encroachment into the West. We’re still waiting.

Exclusive: Sharia Infiltrates German Courts, Schools, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Once again a German court ruled by referring to Shrai’a (Islamic law), which predominantly incites to denigration of women, hatred, violence.
Most recently, Lisa, a German woman (46) married to an Egyptian, called the police seeking protection for herself and her 17-year-old daughter from assaults by her husband. Magdi, Lisa’s husband, threatened to kill their daughter who had been raped by a man. Magdi, a practicing Muslim, believes that his daughter committed “Zena” (adultery). He told his wife that he was always suspicious of his daughter who clandestinely had a German boyfriend. Lisa filed a divorce case against her husband, and requested deporting him.
 
The judge, Matthias Rau, at a court in Hanover, Germany, ruled (January 21, 2009), Lisa had to wait for at least one year before she is legally divorced. Her husband cannot be deported. “He must be re-educated, in hopes he would renounce his Islamic understanding of ‘Zena,’” the judge said.
 
The German judge argued, “Muslims have a different understanding of rape than Europeans, and this must be taken into account.”

Not that any of this has anything to do with Islam, of course not, as Yusuf hastens to assure us, because, even Greeks do it!   So yes, we can’t really blame poor Muzzamil for spreading Islam for 25 years, but we should feel sorry for him to make ONE silly mistake and give Islam a bad image!

    Malaysia: Wife beaten for not finding new wife

    A 57-year-old Malaysian Muslim man assaulted his wife and threatened to shoot her after she failed to secure him a young second wife, news reports said today. (But remember: according to a new fatwa she is allowed to beat him too/ed)

    Mohamad Haris Daud, a local police chief in Kuantan in central Pahang state, said the man forced his 60-year-old wife to seek the consent of a woman in her 30s to be his second wife. The frightened wife then went to the woman’s house but found out that she was already married, he said.
