Update:

The Dutch government is ready for any possible fallout of a planned film by far-right MP Geert Wilders that attacks Islam as an “inspiration for murder,” Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said Friday.

“We are ready to react quickly, it is our role to be prepared for calamities,” Balkenende told journalists at his weekly press briefing.

Earlier on Friday Dutch media had reported that the government had compiled a secret document on how best to deal with reactions to the film.

Wilders, the head of the far-right Freedom Party, announced in November that he planned to release a 10-minute film this month that will show that Islam’s holy book, the Koran, “is an inspiration for intolerance, murder and terror”.

Observers say Wilders might burn or tear up the Koran in the movie. In February last year the MP called on Muslims to “tear out half the pages of the Koran and throw them away”.

The Hague fears a repeat of riots when thousands took to the streets in Muslim countries to protest cartoons of the prophet Mohammed that appeared in a Danish newspaper in 2005.

The protests left some hundred people dead, Danish embassies were attacked and Danish goods were boycotted.

Balkenende said he could not comment on Wilders’s film project because he had not seen the actual movie but stressed the government would not censor anything beforehand.

“The Netherlands has a tradition of freedom of expression and freedom of religion but also a tradition of mutual respect, and provocations do not fit into that. I call on everybody to take their individual responsibility,” he said.

According to the De Volkskrant newspaper and RTL-news, the government has already prepared for a possible evacuation of Dutch embassies and citizens from the Middle East.

But Foreign Ministry spokesman Bart Rijs told AFP Friday that there were no special emergency measures for Wilders’s film in place at the moment.

“We always have scenarios for possible calamities at our embassies, consulates and other Dutch representations abroad. They are regularly updated,” he said.

“There is no reason to believe the Dutch government is now implementing an emergency scenario and there is no reason now to evacuate anybody,” Rijs stressed.

Wilders, whose party holds nine of the 150 seats in parliament, insists he will go ahead with his movie despite the uproar.

“Now that everybody is already in a state (over the film) I see it as a confirmation that I should go ahead. I would not be worth a button if I were to capitulate now,” he told the HP/De Tijd magazine.

Wilders is known for his harsh anti-Islam stance and has been under round-the-clock protection since the November 2004 murder of outspoken Dutch columnist Theo van Gogh by a radical Muslim.

Van Gogh was killed after he directed a controversial film written by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a former political ally of Wilders, that examined the subordination of women in Islamic society.

Wilders has received a number of death threats.

The Dutch Government says it is concerned about the reactions in the Netherlands and in foreign countries. What the Government means is, they fear reactions of muslims in Holland and in islamic states. This proves Wilders’s point. Fear is governing Holland.

The chairman of the Dutch muslim council regrets the fact this movie is being made. He fears the worst when this film shall be shown to the public. “Our boys in the street shall have the last words”, he says. This remark can be considered to be the first threat. ’…and we can’t stop them. Look what happens in France” he said.

Muslims and their dhimmi allies (non-Muslims afraid of Islam) who oppose Geert Wilders want to stop him and are assembling a counter movement. Mohammed Sini, the chairman of the foundation of islam and citizenship is planning to build this movement. “This is definitely going to happen. HILVERSUM – The Arab European League (AEL) is going to bring out a film to counter the film on the Koran being prepared by right-wing politician Geert Wilders.

Abdou Bouzerda of the Dutch branch of the AEL said this Thursday evening on the current events programme NOVA.
The AEL hopes in its film to show the other side of the Koran and Islam. “I call on all Muslims to join the public debate,” Bouzerda said.

The Ramadhan Foundation said it was “concerned that action is not being taken on far right and fascist websites that also promote violence and hatred.” Many that promote hatred and violence against minority communities that should be also closed, it said.

In her first major speech on terrorism, Smith spoke of introducing measures to ban extremist websites but singled out Muslim youths as being “most at risk when the propagandists of violent extremism spread their messages of violence.”

“We are already working closely with the communications industry to take action against paedophiles. I believe we should also take action against those who groom vulnerable people for the purposes of violent extremism,” she said.

The Ramadhan Foundation pointed out that it was already clear Islam totally forbids the killing of innocent people and terrorism and said it believed that the “threat is one for the whole country.” It welcomed the change of language used by the government since Prime Minister Gordon Brown took over last year, moving away from such inflammatory labels as “War of Terror”, “Muslim Extremist” or “Islamic Terrorist”, that tarnish and isolate a whole faith.

But the government was warned again about its strategy in not wanting to deal with root causes of terrorism, like the discriminatory nature of UK Foreign policy and wanting to engage young people yet not have dialogue with representative groups.

In fact, he told a lunchtime audience in Toronto yesterday, extremism is the result of an internal fight over the future of Islam, not any crime or injustice perpetrated by the West against Muslims.

“The truth is that they have no sense of grievance against us,” he said. “Truthfully, a Muslim in my country today has more freedom than they do in many Muslim countries.” If democratic countries want to defeat extremism, he said, they have to be ready to say that it is more than the extremists’ methods they abhor.

Islamic Mosque Voodoo

Mosques are extraordinary places for all Muslims. It is not only a place for the worship of Allah, but also a place to conduct many Islamic activities. Besides offering regular daily, and weekly congregation prayers, a mosque is also a place where all planning and logistics are carried out to conduct Jihad, serve as cache of arms, meting out hudud punishments, and manufacturing center for the next generation of Islamic executioners, Islamists, and suicide bombers.

It will be quite prudent to say that he who controls mosques controls Islam. A corollary of this hypothesis is that if any country wishes to contain the rabid Islamists, it must severely restrict the construction of mosques.

Reuters: Belarus jails Mohammed cartoon publisher

More and more writers, bloggers, and publishers face prison, financial ruin, or death.

BELARUS (Reuters) – Belarus on Friday jailed for three years an editor of an independent newspaper who reproduced cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad that first appeared in Denmark in 2005 and caused mass demonstrations across the Muslim world.

The 12 cartoons portraying the founder of Islam, including one showing the prophet with a bomb in his turban, outraged Muslims who saw them as blasphemous. More than 50 people died in protests across the world the following year.

Belarussian authorities shut down the “Zgoda” (Consensus) paper in March 2006, around the time when other European journals began reprinting the cartoons. The security service, still known by its Soviet-era name, the KGB, began an investigation after Muslims in the ex-Soviet state complained.

Editor Alexander Sdvizhkov was sentenced to three years in jail in a closed session of the court for incitement of religious and national hatred.

“May God and the holy cross be with us,” Sdvizhkov said afterwards. His lawyer said she would appeal.

Muslims constitute about two or three percent of the 10 million residents of the country wedged between Russia and three members of the European Union. The Muslim community had called for leniency in the case.

Miklos Haraszti, media freedom representative for the 56-nation Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, protested against Sdvizhkov’s jailing, calling the case against him “shocking” and saying he should be freed.

“Persecution of journalists for trying to inform the public on important issues is a misuse of hate speech laws,” Haraszti said in a statement from Vienna. “In fact the Belarus government has used the international controversy around the cartoons as a pretext to eliminate a critical voice from public life.”

President Alexander Lukashenko is accused by the West of ruling the country with an iron grip, jailing opponents, shutting down independent media and rigging polls, including his own re-election to a third term in 2006.

DEFIANT tennis star Marcos Baghdatis, captured on film chanting offensive slogans on a party video, says he was just sticking up for his country.

Footage of the Greek Cypriot tennis star arm in arm with the alleged ringleader of a confrontation with police at the Open and chanting “Turks out of Cyprus” has ignited fury among Melbourne’s Turkish Cypriot community, with one leader calling for him to be kicked out of the country.

Australian Turkish Cypriot Cultural and Welfare Association president Hakki Suleyman accused Baghdatis of a racist attack and said he should be expelled from the Australian Open and booted out of the country.

But Baghdatis today refused to budge.

“There has been a lot of coverage of me appearing in a video on youtube.com,” the tennis sensation said in a statement.

“In that video from 2007 I was supporting the interest of my country, Cyprus, while protesting against a situation that is not recognized by the United Nations.

“Now I would like to concentrate on the tournament and ask everyone to respect that. I love the Australian Open and want to do well here.”

Several clips on video-sharing website YouTube show Baghdatis at a barbecue hosted by the Hellas Fan Club after he was knocked out of last year’s Open and reportedly singing “Turks out of Cyprus”.

Premier John Brumby warned fans and players there was no room for ethnic rivalries at sport events.

“There is no place for ethnic rivalry in sport in our state,” Mr Brumby said.

“It’s one thing to get out there and support your player, but it’s another to get into the business of ethnic rivalry and there is no place, I think, in Melbourne in our sporting culture for over-zealous ethnic rivalry,” Mr Brumby.

Members of the Hellas Fan Club were at the centre of a capsicum spray row with police at the Open on Tuesday night.

Mr Suleyman said his association would write to Tennis Australia, the State Government and other organisations calling for Baghdatis to be expelled from the Australian Open and the country for abusing his position.

“When you become a professional sportsman you have to be careful about what you are saying and it doesn’t matter where you are, you are followed and it can be used against you,” he said.

Islam tells women to cover heads, says head of religious affairs office 

Islam undoubtedly requires women to cover their heads, Turkey’s head of religious affairs said yesterday in a statement that coincides with the current discussions on lifting the headscarf ban in universities.
“As long as a woman says ‘I am a Muslim,’ she should cover her head,” Professor Ali BardakoÄŸlu, president of the Religious Affairs Directorate, said in an interview with the private NTV channel.

“Discussions on the necessity of wearing headscarves or head coverings are of a legal and political nature. In religious terms, there is no doubt that they should,” he said, adding that Islamic rules, dating back centuries, are unalterable.

“Politicians may forbid or allow the wearing of headscarves,” BardakoÄŸlu said. “It is not my duty to tell them what to do,” he added. “Whether Muslim women abide by the rule is up to their will,” BardakoÄŸlu said, noting that the headscarf dispute can be solved with dialogue between political parties.

PARIS (Reuters) – President Nicolas Sarkozy’s increasingly frequent and positive references to God and faith have drawn fire from critics who accuse him of violating France’s separation of church and state.

Sarkozy, a taboo-breaker whose whirlwind love life has distracted the media for weeks, broke with traditional presidential reserve about religion to stress France’s Christian roots in a speech in a Rome basilica just before Christmas.

In Riyadh on Monday, he hailed Islam as “one of the greatest and most beautiful civilisations the world has known” and described his Saudi hosts as rulers who “appeal to the basic values of Islam to combat the fundamentalism that negates them”.

His praise for a kingdom that enforces and propagates a strict version of Islam, during a visit aimed at securing lucrative export contracts, was the last straw for his critics.

“This is not respect for the separation of church and state,” Socialist opposition leader Francois Hollande said.

“This is an ideological stand that makes religion into an instrument to promote French products (such as) civilian nuclear plants for Muslim countries,” he said. “Mixing religion and foreign policy is illogical and wrong.”

Jean-Louis Debre, a leading Gaullist who is now head of the Constitutional Council, indirectly chided Sarkozy by saying the 1905 law separating church and state was a good one and that it was “opportune to make sure its balance is not upset”.

PARIS (Reuters) – France’s Muslim minority, the largest in Europe, is becoming increasingly more observant, with more of them saying daily prayers, visiting mosques and fasting during Ramadan, a new survey said on Thursday.

This appeared to reflect in part a reaction to discrimination against Muslims in France, and a growing number of new mosques being built in the country.

Thirty-nine percent of Muslims surveyed by the polling group IFOP said they observed Islam’s five prayers daily, a steady rise from 31 percent in 1994, according to the study published in the Catholic daily La Croix.

Mosque attendance for Friday prayers has risen to 23 percent, up from 16 percent in 1994, while Ramadan observance has reached 70 percent compared to 60 percent in 1994, it said.

Drinking alcohol, which Islam forbids, has also declined to 34 percent from 39 percent in 1994, according to the survey of 537 people of Muslim origin.

There was strong progression among Muslims under 25 for both mosque attendance and Ramadan observance. “There is a general tendency among the young to reaffirm their (Islamic) identity,” Islam expert Franck Fregosi told La Croix.

He said this was partly a reaction to discrimination against France’s Muslim minority, at five million the largest in Europe: “This ‘Islam as a refuge’ can be a way to respond to an environment that is not favorable to young Muslims.”

Part of the growth could also have come because it is easier to practice Islam in France thanks to many new mosques that have been constructed over the years, he added.

Far-right groups are calling for a ban on the building of new mosques as part of a new campaign to stop the spread of radical Islam in Europe.

Belgium’s far-right Vlaams Belang party teamed up with radical groups from Austria and Germany on Thursday to launch a Charter to ‘fight the Islamisation of West-European cities’.

“We are not opposed to freedom of religion but we don’t want Muslims to impose their way of life and traditions over here because much of it is not compatible with our way of life,” Vlaams Belang’s Filip Dewinter told Radio Netherlands Worldwide. “We can’t accept headscarves in our schools, forced marriages and the ritual slaughter of animals.”

Mosques as catalysts

In particular, the coalition called for a moratorium on new mosques, which they say “act as catalysts for the Islamisation of entire neighbourhoods.”

“We already have over 6,000 mosques in Europe, which are not only a place to worship but also a symbol of radicalisation, some financed by extreme groups in Saudi Arabia or Iran,” Mr Dewinter explained, citing a large new mosque being built in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam. “Its minarets are six floors high, higher than the illuminations of the Feyenoord soccer stadium!” he cried. “These kinds of symbols have to stop.”

However, it is unclear how the group plans to tackle perceived threats such as the teaching of the Koran, apart from holding rallies in European cities with high immigrant populations.

No support

Aside from Austria’s Freedom Party (FPö), there was a notable absence of other political heavyweights during the press conference in the Flemish city of Antwerp. A spokesman for Italy’s Allianza Nazionale said he was unaware of the Charter, though his party too was looking at the issue of the new mosques. Dutch right-wing maverick politician Geert Wilders, who is currently producing a film about the danger of the Koran, also stayed away.

But Mr Dewinter seems unruffled by the paltry political support: “This movement may be small today but I am convinced it will grow into something major.”

A Declaration of War Against the People of Europe

This is the big year for the European Union.

It’s the run-up to the implementation of the Treaty of Lisbon, which will codify the permanent dictatorship of the Brussels bureaucracy over what is to become Eurabia. An accompanying propaganda blitz from the governments of Europe and their related quangos is attempting to soften up the subject populations of the European “provinces” and grease the skids for their acceptance of the new regime.

Multiculturalism, bureaucratese, and Islam are all being stirred together into one big sleep-inducing soup. FIOE, the Federation of Islamic Organizations in Europe, is already licking their chops:

FIOE’s slick website with its logo of the big hand holding onto the little hand conveys the a subliminal message: “Don’t worry about us! We’re just like you, only we wear funny clothes and pray five times a day!”

Yes, the mandarins of the EU would like you to believe that the Muslim immigrants and future overlords of Europe are just like you and me, regular people, ordinary citizens of the new stateless continent of Europe.

But they’re not.

Last year in Vienna a conference was held about so-called Euroislam (pdf, German). Here the prominent Muslim delegates formulated a common strategic vision about a Europe dominated by Islam. At the event Mustafa Ceric, Grand Mufti of Bosnia, envisioned an “upcoming Islamic era which, modeled on Moorish Spain and Osmannic Southern Europe, will take over after Christendom”.

Among those present was the ubiquitous professor Tariq Ramadan. He advised that the more long-sighted intentions of Euroislam should remain hidden from the general public.

The conference was in agreement about the first and foremost goal, namely the introduction of religious Islamic jurisprudence (sharia) in Europe “in the beginning at least as a parallel system alongside national laws in European states”. As to the real meaning of sharia they all agreed to avoid publicity as far as possible.

One might wonder why the declarations from that conference did not attract wider attention than they actually did. Could it be that such forecasts for Islam are so far-fetched that nobody takes them seriously? Or could it be that forecasts such as this about Euroislam are so deviant from the wishful thinking of the otherwise so self-asserting cultural elites in Europe that they prefer to ignore what was really said?

The same could be said about the problematic (lets call him sly & sinister) professor Tariq Ramadan who proclaimed the most worrying statement: The real intentions of Euroislam must be concealed from the general public. Quite a harsh and frank statement, considering that he must anticipate being quoted in the media. But maybe he just cynically relies on the negligence of “the infidels”?

Tariq Ramadan continues to be a frequent and acknowledged guest at official conferences all over Europe, not least in the Nordic countries, where he lately has been used as an expert on countering the radicalization of Muslim youths, among other things. He is held in high esteem among young educated Danish Muslims.

A Geneva teacher fired for controversial comments he made in an article for a French newspaper will receive SFr255,000 in damages from the canton of Geneva. The canton announced yesterday it is paying the amount to Hani Ramadan, a French teacher from a junior high school (cycle d’orientation) in Meyrin. The sum is the equivalent of two years’ salary for the teacher who was sacked in November 2004 after defending the stoning of men and women guilty of adultery.

His opinion piece was published in the fall of 2002 by Le Monde, the Paris-based newspaper, causing a storm of controversy. The canton ruled that Ramadan had violated his professional principles in making public such views. Ramadan, who has since worked as director of Geneva’s Islamic center, subsequently contested the decision to fire him. An appeal commission of the education department sided with Ramadan, annulling the termination to the embarrassment of cantonal decision-makers.

The canton opted to pay the maximum indemnity to guarantee “peace” over the issue, Laurent Moutinot, cantonal president, told a press conference. The government has also agreed to pay Ramadan’s legal fees, which have amounted to SFr90,000 in the affair. In all, the canton has paid more than SFr1 million to deal with the conflict.

Dutch crisis talks over anti-Islam film: reports

THE HAGUE – The Dutch government has held crisis talks over the possible fallout of a planned film by far-right MP Geert Wilders that attacks Islam as an ‘inspiration for murder,’ media reports said Friday.

The reports said the government had compiled a secret document on how best to deal with reactions to the film.

Wilders, the head of the far-right Freedom Party, announced in November that he planned to release a 10-minute film this month that will show that Islam’s holy book, the Koran, ‘is an inspiration for intolerance, murder and terror’.

The Hague fears a repeat of the Danish cartoon riots when thousands took to the streets in Muslim countries to protest cartoons of the prophet Mohammed that appeared in a Danish newspaper.

The protests left some hundred people dead, Danish embassies were attacked and Danish goods were boycotted.

According to the De Volkskrant newspaper and RTL-news, the government has already prepared for a possible evacuation of Dutch embassies and citizens from the Middle East.

But Foreign Ministry spokesman Bart Rijs told AFP Friday that there were no special emergency measures for Wilders’ film.

‘We always have scenarios for possible calamities at our embassies, consulates and other Dutch representations abroad. They are regularly updated,’ he said.

‘There is no reason to believe the Dutch government is now implementing an emergency scenario and there is no reason now to evacuate anybody,’ Rijs stressed.

Wilders, whose party holds nine of the 150 seats in parliament, insists he will go ahead with his movie despite the uproar.

‘Now that everybody is already in a state (over the film) I see it as a confirmation that I should go ahead. I would not be worth a button if I were to capitulate now,’ he told the HP/De Tijd magazine.

Wilders is known for his harsh anti-Islam stance and has been under round-the-clock protection since the November 2004 murder of outspoken Dutch columnist Theo van Gogh by a radical Muslim. He has received a number of death threats.
