Sharia law “courts” are already dealing with crime on the streets of London, it emerged today.

The revelation came after the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, called for an “accommodation” with parts of the Islamic legal code in a speech which attracted widespread condemnation.

The Archbishop said parts of civil law could be dealt with under the sharia system but already some communities have gone much further – and it was revealed today that a teenage stabbing case among the Somali community in Woolwich had been dealt with by a Sharia “trial”.

Robert Spencer: Many have pointed out that Orthodox Jews have private arbitration courts for marriage and family issues, and that’s all that Williams was saying Muslims should have in Britain. But there are key differences: Islamic law is a program for the governance of the state, and there is no easy sundering of that program from family and marriage law, so it is certain that if Islamic law is instituted even in part in the UK, some Muslims will press for the rest to follow, including the institutionalized subjugation of non-Muslims.

The unusual suggestion from Britain’s highest ranking Christian leader Thursday would, if adopted, allow British Muslims to choose to resolve marital and financial disputes under Islamic law, known as Shariah, rather than through British courts.

Archbishop Rowan Williams said in a radio interview with the BBC that incorporating Islamic law could help improve Britain’s flagging social cohesion.

“Certain provisions of Shariah are already recognized in our society and under our law, so it’s not as if we’re bringing in an alien and rival system,” said Williams, who gave a speech on the topic Thursday night.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s spokesman immediately rejected Williams’ proposal.

“The prime minister believes British law should apply in this country, based on British values,” said Michael Ellam.

The idea was also rejected by Sayeed Warsi, an opposition spokeswoman for social affairs. She said all British citizens had to be subject to the same laws developed by Parliament.

Williams said he was not advocating that Britain allow extreme aspects of Shariah, which has been associated with harsh punishments meted out by Islamic courts in Saudi Arabia and some other countries and has been used to undermine the rights of women.

“Nobody in their right mind” would want to see that, he said. He called for “a clear eye” when discussing Islamic law.

Mohammed Shafiq, director of the Ramadhan Foundation, said the use of Shariah would help lower tensions in British society.

“It would make Muslims more proud of being British,” he said. “It would give Muslims the sense that the British respect our faith.”

The United States on Thursday urged Israel not to exacerbate the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has scaled down its energy supply as it pursues rocket launchers in the territory.

“We understand Israel’s right to defend itself but we do not think that action should be taken that would infringe upon or worsen the humanitarian situation for the civilian population in Gaza,” said US State Department spokesman Tom Casey.

“I am sure we will continue to convey that position to them.”

Israel on Thursday began reducing by the electricity it supplies to Gaza via high-tension power lines. “The Israeli electricity company on Thursday evening reduced by about 1% the electricity supplied by high tension line to the Gaza Strip,” Defense Ministry spokesman Shlomo Dror said.

Speaking in Israel, Defense Minister Ehud Barak vowed that “if the rocket fire from Gaza continues, we will intensify our operations and strikes against the other side, until a solution is found.”

De Volkskrant has the latest on the continuing political saga of whether, and to what extent, burqas should be banned in the Netherlands. Despite the fact that there’s only a limited number of women wearing this type of garment, the issue keeps stirring up strong political sentiments.

Earlier, the cabinet agreed that burqas would be banned for government workers and at schools. On Friday, the government is expected to announce that burqas will also be banned from public transport. And for those of you cynical enough to believe that all of this has anything to do with Islamophobia, the ban, if introduced, will also apply to balaclavas and crash helmets.

Muslims are allowed to lie 

(IsraelNN.com) Hamas leaders spoke to the Arabic language Ash-Sharq il-Awsat newspaper recently and explained that as Muslims, they are allowed to lie. In an interview printed on Thursday, senior Hamas terrorists explained, “A Muslim is permitted to say things that oppose his beliefs in order to prevent damages or to be saved from death.”

This approach, known in Arabic as “taqiyya,” was behind several Hamas leaders’ recent public expression of support for Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, they explained. Senior Hamas terrorists in Samaria, who were recently released from jail, publicly expressed disapproval with the Hamas takeover of Gaza and said they supported the PA forces. The sources quoted in Ash-Sharq il-Awsat explained that the Samarian terrorists’ announcement was not a sign of dissent within Hamas ranks, but rather a permitted use of “taqiyya” to deceive Abbas and avoid prison sentences.

Police have released details of a woman who attacked two pilots on a flight from Blenheim to Christchurch this morning.

The woman, who also made bomb threats, is a 33-year-old Blenheim resident.

Both pilots suffered knife wounds, one to the hand and the other to a foot, and are now in hospital. One passenger received a minor injury that was treated at the scene.

The woman, who police said was originally from Somalia, made bomb threats claiming there were two bombs on board the plane.

Abu Hamza al-Masri once led London’s Finsbury Park Mosque, which was attended by both Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and “shoe bomber” Richard Reid. One top British counterterrorism official described the mosque as a “honeypot for extremists.”

The Egyptian-born al-Masri was arrested on a U.S. extradition warrant in 2004, but the process was put on hold while he stood trial in Britain and appealed his convictions.

The Home Secretary today has signed an order approving the extradition,” a Home Office spokesman said, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with department policy.

Al-Masri has 14 days to appeal. If he does not, he will be sent to the U.S. within 28 days, the spokesman said.

According to the Filipino press, Jikiri told Congress his bill was “a defining law which will finally end the stereotyping of Muslims as kidnappers, drug pushers [and] terrorists.”

Journalist ‘insulted Islam’ when he distributed report questioning polygamy

KABUL, Afghanistan – Conservative clerics and elders demanded Thursday that the Afghan government not interfere with a controversial death sentence handed down to a young journalist convicted of insulting Islam for distributing a report questioning polygamy.

Sayed Parwez Kaambakhsh, 23, was sentenced to death on Jan. 22 by a three-judge panel in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif for handing out a report he printed off the Internet to fellow journalism students at Balkh University.

The article questioned why men can have four wives but women cannot have multiple husbands.

Anger Outrage as Muslim scholar denied visa for Britain

Twenty members of parliament’s lower House of Commons signed a motion expressing “grave concern” at the prospect of Qaradawi being granted a visa.
A Home Office spokesman said: “We can confirm that al-Qaradawi has been refused a visa to visit the UK.

The UK will not tolerate the presence of those who seek to justify any acts of terrorist violence or express views that could foster inter-community violence.”

The move was welcomed by the Community Security Trust, an organisation which works to prevent anti-Semitic attacks, as “brave and correct”.
“There were many different communities that were very unhappy at the idea of Qaradawi returning to Britain,” said Mark Gardner, its director of communications.

Cordoba’s cathedral was once a mosque

Will UNESCO give the Muslims in Spain what they want? They’re more likely to do so than the Vatican. In any case, there are innumerable churches all over the Islamic world that have been turned into mosques, and we never hear about them. No one is agitating in Constantinople for the Hagia Sophia to be opened again for public Christian prayer, or in Damascus for the Umayyad Mosque, built atop a demolished church dedicated to St. John the Baptist, to be opened to Christians. Now, why is that?

CAIRO — Prominent Muslim scholar Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi has been denied a visa to get medical treatment in Britain.
“The British Embassy in Doha earlier Wednesday sent a fax to Sheikh Qaradawi informing him that his visa application for treatment has been refused,” sources close to him told IslamOnline.net.

“The fax said the application contradicts with article 41 without specifying what the article said,” they added.

Sheikh Qaradawi, the president of the International Union for Muslim Scholars, had applied for a medical visa almost a year ago.

He was discharged from the Hamad hospital in the Qatari capital Doha on Saturday, November 24, 2007, after recovering from a minor vertebral column crack he endured from a slipped disc.

Because of his illness, Qaradawi, 81, had been absent from several Islamic gatherings, the latest of which was Al-Quds International Forum in Istanbul, Turkey, earlier the same month.

Late August, Qaradawi was hospitalized in Algeria after suffering from a stomach ulcer.

Influential Lobby

The prominent Muslim scholar said the British government was divided on the visa application.

“There were differences within the British government,” he told Al-Jazeera news channel late Wednesday over the phone from Cairo.

He said the Home and Foreign Offices were in favor of giving him the visa, adding that some Home Office officials visited him at his home.

“But the there the neo-conservatives, the Zionist lobby and some right-wing media outlets.”

* Muslim group protests US Air Force Academy decision to invite speakers who blast Islam

DENVER: A Muslim advocacy group is decrying the U.S. Air Force Academy’s decision to invite three self-described former terrorists who the group said slam Islam with “hate-filled” rhetoric.

The D.C.-based Council on American-Islamic Relations said one of the speakers, Walid Shoebat, has said that “Islam is the devil.”

* He is not wrong.

Shoebat, Kamal Saleem and Zachariah Anani are scheduled to speak Wednesday at the 50th Annual Academy Assembly in Colorado Springs, where the topic of the four-day event is “Dismantling Terrorism.”

Shoebat has published an online autobiography describing his journey from membership in the Palestine Liberation Organization to Israeli sympathizer. Saleem also is a former member of the PLO, and Zak Anani describes himself as a former member of several Lebanese terrorist groups. The three appear together regularly.

Maj. Brett Ashworth, an Air Force Academy spokesman, defended the decision, saying the purpose of the event is “to educate future officers and delegates from 50 colleges on the ideology and methodology of terrorists” and the three men could provide valuable insight.

But Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for CAIR, said the men also denounce the Muslim faith.

“Islam is the devil? I mean c’mon!” Hooper said. “And these people are going to talk as experts to cadets who may possibly serve in parts of the Muslim world?”

Saleem, who said he quit the PLO in 1985 after converting to Christianity, said in a telephone interview there are always people who disagree with his views about Islam.

Others, he said, tell him, “Thank you for enlightening us.”

Hooper said the three speakers have triggered protests at speaking engagements throughout the country, and he told Air Force academy officials that inviting the men to speak about terrorism would be like “inviting David Duke to speak about race relations.”

He said CAIR offered to connect the Air Force with Muslims in Colorado who also could speak at the event to balance the discussion. However, he said he was told the topic was terrorism, not religion.

“The academy assembly has nothing to do with religion or evangelical Christianity for that matter,” Ashworth said. “This is not going to be a discussion on Islam. It’s a discussion on terrorism.”

* But Islam is based on terrorism. How do you separate one from the other?

Religion has been a sensitive topic at the Air Force Academy in the past. A group of cadet graduates had claimed the academy violated their rights, saying evangelical Christian values were forced onto them. They filed a lawsuit, which was dismissed in 2006 after a judge said they couldn’t claim their rights were violated because they no longer attended the academy.

An Air Force task force also concluded there was no religious discrimination at the Academy but noted some cadets and staff were insensitive. In February 2006, the Air Force adopted new guidelines cautioning top officers about promoting their religious views.
