Indonesia: Urged on over mosque loudspeakers, Muslims go on rampage against students of Christian theological school to “drive out the unwanted neighbor”

 

“Key among motives for the attack, according to a member of the village assembly, was that area Muslims felt ‘disturbed’ by the presence of the Christian college.”

In an update on this story, it becomes all the more apparent that many locals already had their minds made up, and only needed an excuse — however ridiculous — to attack. And it wasn’t the first time this school has been targeted.

JAKARTA, July 31 (Compass Direct News) – For a second consecutive night some 580 students from the Arastamar Evangelical School of Theology (SETIA) in East Jakarta slept in the lobby of Indonesia’s parliament yesterday following demonstrations against the school that left at least 17 students injured.

Urged on by announcements from a mosque loudspeaker to “drive out the unwanted neighbor,” hundreds of protestors shouting “Allahu-Akbar [Allah is greater]” and brandishing machetes, sharpened bamboo and acid continued to attack 1,400 students and school staff members even as they were evacuated over the weekend (July 26-27).

Britain: Intelligence Chiefs warn of exploding Al Qaeda Females

Warning on al-Qaeda’s new female recruits

The moves follow a spate of attacks in the Middle East conducted by women bombers and increasing concerns among European security services about increased radicalisation of female militants. The officials specifically cite the UK and North Africa as problem areas.

Women’s involvement in recruiting volunteers is a key concern. Though the only known European female suicide bomber was Muriel Degauque, a 38-year-old convert from Belgium who killed herself in Iraq in 2005, European security officials told The Observer that services were monitoring dozens of women involved in logistics or propaganda. There are also fears of women bombers being sent from overseas, particularly north Africa.

India:  Man set on fire for marrying Muslim girl

Close on the heels of the beheading of a man for marrying a girl outside his religion at a village in Murshidabad district, another man was set on fire by his in-laws on Friday at Anarpur village under Baduria PS in North 24-Parganas district for the same reason.

With severe burns, Arka Banerjee (22), a resident of Barasat’s Chowdhurybagan, is now struggling for life in Barasat district hospital, Superintendent of Police of North 24-Parganas district, Supratim Sarkar, said in Kolkata on Saturday.

Kuwait prepares web law

Kuwait’s prosecutor general, Hamed al-Othman, has said that he has finalised a Bill that will criminalise the promotion of vice, incitement against the country’s leadership and insulting Islam on the internet. In an interview with Al-Qabas newspaper he said that offenders would face up to a year in prison and/or a fine. If the victims are minors the prison term rises to seven years.

Nine Palestinians were killed – including members of Hamas’s security forces – and more than 90 were wounded in fighting that erupted Saturday between Hamas and Fatah members in Gaza City.

SLIDESHOW: Pictures of the week

The clashes began when hundreds of Hamas policemen raided homes belonging to the Hilles clan in the city’s Shajayieh neighborhood in a bid to arrest suspects in the bombing that killed five Hamas men nine days ago.

Hamas has accused members of the clan, which has long been affiliated with Fatah, of being behind the explosion, which also killed a seven-year-old girl.
