A Lebanese man has been sentenced to life in jail over a failed plot to bomb passenger trains in Germany in 2006.

Yusef Mohammed al-Hajj Dib, 24, was convicted of attempted murder by the court in Dusseldorf, western Germany.

In July 2006, two bombs were found on trains in Dortmund and Koblenz, but the devices failed to go off.

Hajj Dib had argued he only wanted to scare the public after being angered by a row over the the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

The cartoons – that were first printed in a Danish newspaper – triggered violent protests across the Muslim world.

Hajj Dib is one of two main suspects accused of planting the bombs.

Pentagon Turnover Rolls Hesham Islam

Ace Washington Times Pentagon reporter Bill Gertz reports that two casualties of the change in administration will be Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England and his special assistant Hesham Islam.

Islam, previously described by England as “my interlocutor” on Islamic issues and outreach, drew scrutiny in January “after a dispute with Joint Staff analyst Stephen Coughlin in the fall of 2007 over the nature of Islamist extremism,” Gertz reports. “Mr. Islam disagreed with Mr. Coughlin, a specialist on Islamic law and its ties to extremism, and later referred to him as a ‘Christian zealot with a pen.'”

Coughlin then was forced out after being told his contract would not be renewed. Officials said the move was unrelated to Islam’s criticism.

Writer Claudia Rosett dug in to Islam’s posted biography and found a number of discrepancies. Among them, Islam told an interviewer that a film depicting his life story would begin with “huddling in terror as Israeli bombs came raining down, demolishing much of the building around him and his family” in Cairo. But, Rosett noted, Israel never bombed Cairo. She also found no records to support Islam’s claim that he spent three days floating in the Arabian Sea after an Iranian torpedo sunk a cargo ship he was on.

We reported that Islam, serving as an outreach liaison for England, helped schedule meetings for the deputy secretary with a member of Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood and a Lebanese ambassador considered a proxy for Syria. U.S. policy at the time was to freeze out both entities.

THE HAGUE, NIS NEWS 06/12/08 – Integration Minister Eberhard van der Laan has made it clear in a Lower House debate that he intends to pursue a different course from his ousted predecessor Ella Vogelaar. The new minister said integration is in “a phase of conflict”. And he plans to stop the subsidy to the Marokko.nl website.

* Note the whiny, apologetic tone of this writer:

After a period in which immigrants experienced distress on leaving their country, there is now anger both among them and among the white population. Immigrants sometimes feel driven into a corner, while the Dutch feel the same, because, for example, their women are called names on the street and homosexuals discriminated against, was the tenor of the views outlined by Van der Laan. “Integration is in the phase of conflict,” as he summarised it.

Reuters Calls Name Calling a ‘Violent Hate Crime’ Against Arab-Americans?

Political correctness is killing us!

Apparently, if one calls an Arab-American an A** H*le, Reuters and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee want all Americans to know that this is to be considered a “violent hate crime.” At least that is what it seems when looking over the very lose and sloppy definition of “violent hate crimes” in a recent story on the falling numbers of such crimes against Arab-Americans in the U.S.

While ostensibly a good story — discrimination against Arab-Americans has decreased — it is still odd that Reuters allows this Muslim advocacy group to define even name calling as a “hate crime” and “violent” at that. So many levels of behavior are categorized under the rubric “hate crime” here that it really makes a mockery of the term, if one is even disposed to accept such a term in the first place.

Reuters starts off saying that so-called “hate crimes” against Arab-Americans have “decreased steadily since the Sept. 11, 2001,” yet it goes on to claim that attacks “are still more common than they were before the hijacking.” It’s as if these crimes are rampant here, or something.
