Obama to “reboot” America’s image in the Islamic world

“I think we’ve got a unique opportunity to reboot America’s image around the world and also in the Muslim world in particular,” says Obama. He wants to “create a relationship of mutual respect and partnership in countries and with peoples of good will who want their citizens and ours to prosper together.”

Great. But here again he betrays the assumption that the friction between the West and the Islamic world was created by the West and can thus be healed by the West, and that he will find partners who are willing to treat infidels with respect not just in the short term.

A GROUP founded by a Muslim extremist who encourages children to kill themselves for Allah plans to build a huge complex in Sydney to teach young people Islam.

In what it says is a world first, the Global Islamic Youth Centre is trying to raise more than $6 million to build a giant “prayer, learning and sporting” facility in Liverpool.

It has already raised $700,000 towards a $1m land purchase.

The organisation says it expects the local Muslim population to almost double to 20,000 in the next decade and notes that a third of the population is under 19.

NSW must monitor Islamic centre

The NSW government must ensure a proposed Islamic school in Sydney will not teach the views of an associated Muslim extremist, the opposition says.

The Global Islamic Youth Centre is attempting to raise more than $6 million to build a huge complex at Liverpool in Sydney’s west.

The centre was founded by Sheik Feiz Mohammad, who in 2007 described Jews as “pigs” and called on children to sacrifice themselves to Allah in a series of DVDs.

Opposition education spokesman Andrew Stoner said the government must cast a close eye over the school and what it may teach.

“The state government needs to give an assurance to the community that any proposal for this Islamic school and youth centre will be put under the microscope,” Mr Stoner told reporters.

“It needs to ensure that these extremist views, these messages of hate, cannot be taught to young school children in this state.”

Rioting immigrants set fire to cars, shops and rubbish containers in a town in southern Spain overnight after a Malian was stabbed to death while being mugged, police said on Monday.

A Civil Guard statement said Sega S., 24, was stabbed on Sunday night and died from his injuries early on Monday. Police arrested three Moroccans, one of them the suspected killer.

After the stabbing, a score of angry sub-Saharan immigrants gathered in La Mojonera, in southern Almeria province, and started fires in shops and rubbish bins.

Public anger at the recent stoning of a 13-year-old girl in Somalia shows the growing resentment towards radical Islamists who have gained control of much of the south and centre of the country. 

Insurgents from the militant group al-Shabab are seen as authoritarian and unaccountable – unlike the Islamists who were in control of the capital, Mogadishu, in 2006.

Lots of people have emailed us to express suspicion at the reports of “youths” rioting in Greece after the police shooting of a teenager. Philippines: Jihad, Swine & Muslims

There is a matter of fundamental importance missing from the story below, and that is the existence of specific injunctions in sharia law against the display of alcohol or pork by unbelievers. Umdat al Salik, a Shafi jurisprudence manual certified as reliable by Al-Azhar University in Cairo, states:

“The subject peoples must “pay the non-Muslim poll tax (jizya) [and] are distinguished from Muslims in dress, wearing a wide cloth belt (zunnar); are not greeted with ‘as-Salamu ‘alaykum’ [the traditional Muslim greeting, ‘Peace be with you’]; must keep to the side of the street; may not build higher than or as high as the Muslims’ buildings, though if they acquire a tall house, it is not razed; are forbidden to openly display wine or pork … recite the Torah or Evangel aloud, or make public display of their funerals or feastdays; and are forbidden to build new churches.” (o11.3, 5)

Thus, this story is not merely about one local population’s quirky sensitivities, but about the intent on the part of the Muslims in this area to impose Islamic law.

Honor killing in Pakistan: Girl clubbed to death by uncle

A manual of Islamic law certified by Al-Azhar as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy says that “retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right.” However, “not subject to retaliation” is “a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring’s offspring.” (‘Umdat al-Salik o1.1-2).

In other words, someone who kills his child incurs no legal penalty under Islamic law.
