The most violent country in Europe: Britain is also worse than South Africa and U.S.Â

Britain’s violent crime record is worse than any other country in the European union, it has been revealed.

Official crime figures show the UK also has a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and even South Africa – widely considered one of the world’s most dangerous countries.

The figures comes on the day new Home Secretary Alan Johnson makes his first major speech on crime, promising to be tough on loutish behaviour.Â

The Tories said Labour had presided over a decade of spiralling violence.

In the decade following the party’s election in 1997, the number of recorded violent attacks soared by 77 per cent to 1.158million – or more than two every minute.

The figures, compiled from reports released by the European Commission and United Nations, also show:Â

The UK has the second highest overall crime rate in the EU.
It has a higher homicide rate than most of our western European neighbours, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
The UK has the fifth highest robbery rate in the EU.
It has the fourth highest burglary rate and the highest absolute number of burglaries in the EU, with double the number of offences than recorded in Germany and France.

But it is the naming of Britain as the most violent country in the EU that is most shocking. The analysis is based on the number of crimes per 100,000 residents.

In the UK, there are 2,034 offences per 100,000 people, way ahead of second-placed Austria with a rate of 1,677.

Almost 80 per cent of American Jews voted for Barack Â Hussein Obama as President. Those of us who warned that this man would endanger Israel were scorned.

How could that possibly be, said the secular, liberal American Jews. He’s a Democrat, he’s black and he’s pro-abortion. With this triple-lock of unassailable virtue, how can he be bad for Israel? Now some of them are getting an awful feeling that they may have made the biggest misjudgment of their lives.

As the world watched events unfold in Iran, Obama’s double standard over Israel was illuminated in flashing neon lights. How come he’s saying it is wrong for him to tell the Iranians what to do, people asked themselves, when he is dictating to Israel its policy on settlements?

Why was he so concerned not to antagonise the Iranian regime? Was it because he hopes to reach a Grand Bargain which would allow Iran to develop nuclear capability, provided it promises him ever so nicely it would never turn this into weapons â€” in exchange for which, Israel would be offered up on a plate?

For the past six months, while Obama has been holding out the hand of friendship to Iran, he has been showing Israel a mailed fist.

Â Therefore, the anti-minaret initiative is evil and must be nipped in the butt.
On Radio DRS Â the Swiss Foreign Minister and Ahmadinejad-hussy Calmy-Rey spoke Â against the anti-minaret initiative. The proposed ban on minarets infringes on freedom of religion and was also a danger for the economy and security in Switzerland. “It is as if we would ban church towers,” she said. (well, Calmy Rey already contradicts herself in the next sentence, because banning church towers is unlikely to result in terrorism/ed)

Another critical point was the backlash Â in the Muslim world against Â Switzerland, which the adoption of the initiative could trigger. With reference to the impact of the cartoon controversy in Denmark Â the anti-minaret initiative Â was also dangerous for the foreign policy and relations between Switzerland and other countries. Above all, trade with Arab countries is at stake and Switzerland can’t alienate the Arabs.

One simmering controversy over the Iran protests was over whether the protesters simply wanted to install Mir Hussein Mousavi as President and continue living in a Sharia state, or whether they wanted to overthrow the Islamic Republic altogether. It seems likely that some wanted one and some wanted the other.

In any case, the evidence that some brought forward to show that the protesters had no problem with Sharia was lacking, to say the least: Mousavi is indeed an establishment figure in the Islamic Republic with a sinister past, but that in itself didn’t establish that every demonstrator who took to the streets in Iran was doing so because he or she positively endorsed Mousavi, his program, and his resume. He became a focus of the protests, but as Pamela Geller notesÂ hereÂ of the Iranian voters, their choices were limited: “it was not as if they could write in Ronald Reagan’s name.”

Nor did the fact that the protesters have been shouting “Allahu akbar” necessarily indicate a wholehearted endorsement of Iranian theocracy. The phrase has an extra weight in Iran due to its use as a rallying cry during the Khomeini revolution in 1979, and given Iran’s cultural context, it is not in every respect the same thing to shout this on the streets of Tehran as to shout it on the streets of New York.

Of course, these considerations don’t mean that the protesters, had they prevailed, would have installed a Western-leaning secular government akin to the Shah’s. But those who supported the Shah and secularism have not entirely disappeared from Iran, and cannot be discounted as an element in those protests.

Anyway, this interview with Ayatollah Mohsen Kadivar, an establishment hack like Mousavi, as well as a theocrat and Jew-hater. He praises Obama’s supine response to Iranian tyranny, as if the specter of American support for the protesters would have driven them to embrace Ahmadinejad in droves. But Kadivar does shed a bit more light on the nature of the protests. He insists that the protests have been “thoroughly Islamic,” but also admits that “some young people are oriented towards the West” — although he downplays that fact and maintains that most Iranians want Sharia. Still, the question Geller asked in her article still lingers: “Are people in Iran dying for more of the same thing they have been getting from the Islamic Republic for thirty years?” Since the protests have been essentially crushed at this point, we may never know the answer.

SPIEGEL:Â You are said to be the co-author of the most recent declarations of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi.

Kadivar:Â That is not right. Although I enjoyed his statements, they are not mine. I published my declarations separately, although I support Mousavi strongly. We have found means to communicate with each other. Via the Internet and via third parties, I am in constant contact with my homeland. Every day I receive about 100 messages.

Last weekÂ French President Nicolas SarkozyÂ announced his support for legislation to ban the burka, the dark, heavy and not-too-comfortable garment worn by many Muslim women. The question arises: Is this forcible French secularism run amok, or a prohibition that Americans, who often believe we have struck a better balance between church and state, might entertain?

I would say the latter.

THE Federal Government is involved in multimillion-dollar negotiations to use Christmas Island’s luxurious casino resort in its battle to house the rapidly growing number of asylum seekers and staff required to care for them.

There are now more than 720 asylum seekers and about 300 detention and related staff on the island, in effect doubling the tiny island’s permanent population of about 1100 and putting stress on accommodation.

The casino, on a cliff above the Indian Ocean, has been closed for 11 years, but once turned over $5 billion a year from high-rolling gamblers who flew by private jet to the island only 50 minutes from Jakarta.

“A Thank You, and a Koran, for Obama,” by Andrea Fuller for theÂ New York Times, June 30 (thanks to JW):

President Obama will soon receive a thank-you gift for his speech to the Muslim world in Cairo. Inspired by the address, in which Mr. Obama quoted the Koran, the Council on American-Islamic Relations plans to distribute 100,000 copies of the Koran to national, state and local leaders.The council’s national executive director, Nihad Awad, said at a news conference in Washington today that the speech, in which Mr. Obama called for the end to mutual suspicion between Americans and Muslims, was “inspiring” and “historic.”

The council is soliciting donations to pay for the books; at the national convention of the Islamic Society of North America on July 5, the name of one donor will be chosen as sponsor of the Koran that will be sent to Mr. Obama.

In a public opinion survey done by the council, almost 60 percent of Americans said they were “not very knowledgeable” or “not at all knowledgeable” about Islam. Mr. Awad said that the organization hopes to educate Americans about Islam to combat prejudice.

I’m all for that, and hereby volunteer my services to help in this great effort. My bookÂ The Complete Infidel’s Guide to the KoranÂ will be out this fall, so Mr. Awad can’t say I’m not doing my part!

RAWALPINDI/MIRANSHAH: Taliban slaughtered 18 of their injured men ahead of an operation in Biha valley on Tuesday, apparently because they could not take the wounded along as they retreated.

The ISPR said in a daily update that troops killed another 18 Taliban and arrested 23 from Swat and Dir. Three soldiers were killed and eight including three officers injured in clashes with the Taliban.

Eight Taliban were killed in operations near Rahatkot and Jukhtai, southeast of Fatehpur. An explosive-laden vehicle was seized from the house of Dua Khan, while another was blown up.

Another eight Taliban were killed on a tip off during search-and-sweep operations near Matta and Wanai.
