 It is a common notion that the right to free speech must be held in balance with the requirement to avoid needless offence. That is a mistake. The right to oppose, mock, deride and even insult people’s beliefs is essential to a society where bad ideas are superseded by better ones. There is no right to have one’s emotional sensibilities protected, for it is no business of government to legislate for people’s feelings.

Wilders’ exclusion caused a diplomatic spat between the Netherlands and Britain.

“It is highly regrettable that a Dutch MP (member of parliament) should be denied entry to another EU country,” Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen said in a statement on the Dutch Embassy’s British web site.

It said Verhagen had telephoned David Miliband to “express his displeasure” that a Dutch member of parliament had been excluded.

Miliband defended the decision. “A hate-filled film designed to stir up religious and racial hatred (which race is Islam, Milliboy..?/ed) in this country is contrary to our laws,” he told the BBC….

Oh, yeah, Miliband? Not that there are any Islamic jihadists in the UK are trying to stir up religious hatred, eh wot? Oh no, only Wilders is doing that!

The very people who in 1989 were demanding the murder of Salman Rushdie for writing a book are today leading the charge against Geert Wilders for making a (short) film. The fundamental difference is that 20 years ago, the government supported free speech; today, it has cravenly surrendered. The refusal to admit the oddball Dutch MP Geert Wilders to Britain yesterday marks a further retreat from this country’s traditions of free speech. It stands in stark contrast to what happened exactly 20 years ago tomorrow, when Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran issued a fatwa calling for the death of Salman Rushdie for insulting the Prophet Mohammed in his book The Satanic Verses.

Mr Wilders took a flight from Amdsterdam to Heathrow

A Dutch MP who called the Koran a “fascist book” is being questioned by immigration officials at Heathrow after defying a ban on entering the UK.

Freedom Party MP Geert Wilders was invited to show his controversial film – which links the Islamic holy book to terrorism – in the UK’s House of Lords.

But Mr Wilders, who faces trial in his own country for inciting hatred, has been denied entry by the Home Office.

It is possible the MP could be sent straight back to the Netherlands.

The Dutch Ambassador is also at Heathrow to make clear Dutch government’s opposition to the ban on Mr Wilders entering the UK.  More

Britain has banned Dutch politician Geert Wilders as a threat, on the grounds that its imported Islamists will be violent if they see him: Let’s get this straight: A Dutch politician is banned from Britain not because he’s violent himself, but because theIslamists that have been welcomed to Britain could tear the joint apart.
