Al-Azhar University Professor Sabri Abd Al-Raouf: It Is Okay for Bridegroom’s Mother to Smell Bride’s Armpits before Wedding

Following are excerpts from an interview with Prof. Sabri Abd Al-Rauf of Al-Azhar University, which aired on Dream 2 TV on May 1, 2009.

Prof. Sabri Abd Al-Rauf: The mother [of the bridegroom] and other female relatives may look at the bride’s hair and neck, and may smell her private parts.

Interviewer: Smell what?!

Prof. Sabri Abd Al-Rauf: Her armpits, for example. Some women and girls sweat, and there are men who are nauseated by this.

Interviewer: So the mother may check to make sure…

Prof. Sabri Abd Al-Rauf: The mother may go near the bride, in order to check whether she smells good or bad. There is nothing to prevent this. But the groom is forbidden to look at any part of her except her face and hands.

Interviewer: But there is a fatwa that permits him to see whatever his female relatives may see.

Prof. Sabri Abd Al-Rauf: He is not allowed to see what the female relatives see.

The khimar is the piece of cloth that women use to cover their heads and the protruding part of their breasts. This is what Islamic law requires.

Interviewer: So what this woman is wearing is not a hijab?

Prof. Sabri Abd Al-Rauf: Pardon me?

Interviewer: What she and many other girls wear is not a proper hijab?

Prof. Sabri Abd Al-Rauf: I am only looking at you. I’m not looking in her direction.

Interviewer: So you avert your gaze. But what will you do when you watch a re-run of this show?

Prof. Sabri Abd Al-Rauf: I don’t know…

Interviewer: You are trying to tell me that when you watch TV, and there are women wearing this kind of veil, you avert your gaze?

Prof. Sabri Abd Al-Rauf: I concentrate on my listening, not on my looking. I listen to hear whether what they say is proper or not.

Quoth Ali, the rightful successor to Muhammad according to the Shi’ites:

On the Sunni side of the street (sorry), this quotation is in accord with Bukhari 1.6.301:

The women asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?” He said, “Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?” They replied in the affirmative. He said, “This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn’t it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?” The women replied in the affirmative. He said, “This is the deficiency in her religion.”

Last week, in an unlikely encounter near the Sangre de Cristo mountains of Colorado, I met a couple who had just returned from a sabbatical year in Togo. I asked them about Togo. They told me they had last been in the country ten years ago, and this time had been horrified by the visible signs of Islam in Lomé. Ten years ago, the wife, a native of Togo, told me, there could not have been more than four mosques in Lomé, and now, she said, “there are four hundred.” And what is more, these four hundred are now equipped with P.A. systems, used by the muezzins to make sure that everyone – Muslim and Christian and animist – all over Lomé, hears five times a day the Call To Prayer.

I began to think about Islam in Africa, and the steady advances it appears, largely, at the level of mosque and madrasa and missionary work, through the deployment of oil money from the rich Gulf states, to be making all over sub-Saharan Africa. It is amazing, when one considers the long history of Arab depredations and Arab cruelty, and Arab seizure of black Africans in the longest-running, and cruelest, slave trade in history.

Salma Yaqoob: "Muslim youngsters will react and fight back!"

West Midlands Police have been urged to step in and ban a far right group from holding a march in Birmingham next month to avoid a repeat of the shocking scenes of violence witnessed earlier this month.

White nationalist organisation The English Defence League (EDL) and an associated group, Casuals United, are due to hold a rally against Islamic extremism in the city on September 5. Their first demonstration on August 8 ended with violence and bloodshed as supporters clashed with anti-racism campaigners.

One of those calling for a ban was Respect councillor Salma Yaqoob, who expected more street violence if EDL returned. “When it comes to public safety we have every right to intervene,” she said. “But the ‘just stay away’ message we are hearing won’t wash with today’s Muslim youngsters who won’t put their heads down and carry on walking when they are subjected to racist taunts – they will react and fight back.”

Yesterday, those at a public meeting to discuss how the city should deal with the group’s next visit voted unanimously that the police should have the demonstration banned. West Midlands Police were urged to join forces with Birmingham City Council to apply to the Home Secretary for a banning order under the Public Order Act. But a senior police officer said there were no current plans to do so as the EDL had a legitimate right to hold its march.

UK: Islamic Cleric Threatens Author: "The Consequences For Saying Things Like This Could Be Quite Severe!"

British author calls Muhammad “schizophrenic,” cleric says “people don’t seem to understand the consequences of saying things like this could be quite severe”

This story is one to watch, given the past reactions and incidents resulting from publications like Rushdie’s Satanic Verses, the Danish Muhammad cartoons, The Jewel of Medina (dreadful, but it wasn’t literary critics who firebombed the publishing house), and others. “Sebastian Faulks risks Muslim anger after calling Koran the ‘rantings of a schizophrenic’,” by Lucy Cockcroft for the Telegraph, August 23: via Jihad Watch:

He said the Islamic holy scripture was a “one-dimensional book” that has little literary value, and added that when compared with the Bible its message seemed “barren”.

Faulks, who is known for his meticulous research, has recently read a translation of the Koran to help him write his latest novel, A Week in December, to be published in September.

Unlike his previous historical works, such as Birdsong and Charlotte Gray, his new offering is set in contemporary London.

The cast of characters include the wife of Britain’s youngest MP, a female Tube driver, a hedge fund manager and a Glasgow-born Islamic terrorist recruit named Hassan al Rashid.

It was during research for al Rashid that he began delving into the Koran, which Muslims believe to be divine guidance passed to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel.

In an interview with The Sunday Times Magazine, Faulks said: “It’s a depressing book. It really is. It’s just the rantings of a schizophrenic. It’s very one-dimensional, and people talk about the beauty of the Arabic and so on, but the English translation I read was, from a literary point of view, very disappointing.” […]

“With the Koran there are no stories. And it has no ethical dimension like the New Testament, no new plan for life.”

And in a move that is likely to anger many Muslims, he calls into question the worth of Muhammad.

“Jesus, unlike Muhammad, had interesting things to say. He proposed a revolutionary way of looking at the world: love you neighbour, love your enemy, be kind to people, the meek shall inherit the Earth. Muhammad had nothing to say to the world other than, ‘If you don’t believe in God you will burn forever.'”

Ajmal Masroor, an imam and spokesman for the Islamic Society for Britain, says he does not recognise Faulks’ description of the Koran.

“I could list thousands of scholars, politicians and academics who have given nothing but amazing praise for the Koran, and I am talking about non-Muslims. Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and Bill Clinton to name just a few.

Jefferson reported to John Jay:

The ambassador answered us that [the right] was founded on the Laws of the Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have answered their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Mussulman who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise.

And let’s be thorough, and not forget John Quincy Adams or Winston Churchill. The article continues:

“I actually find his comments amusing, not offensive. They sound like the braying of someone who is rather resentful and un-objective, I would like to be able to sit down and have an informed debate about the Koran with him.”

He said Faulks’ statement runs the risk of stirring religious hatred against Muslims.

“Attacks on Islam are nothing new, but the danger is this will have a “drip, drip” effect.

“People don’t seem to understand the consequences of saying things like this could be quite severe. History tells us it can encourage hatred.”

Inayat Bunglawala, from the Muslim Council of Britain, said Faulks’ view of the Koran was “blinkered”.

“The Prophet Muhammad has had many detractors both during his own time and later on who described him as a ‘madman’ or ‘possessed by an evil spirit’ and so forth in an effort to drown out his beautiful message,” he added.

“Sebastian Faulks should perhaps draw a lesson from the fact that those detractors are all now long forgotten, whereas the Prophet is remembered with love and admiration.”…

It always helps when you have a bunch of your detractors whacked. Just ask Asma bint Marwan. Or Abu ‘Afak. Or Ka’b bin Ashraf.

Here’s an interesting aside for Atlas readers. A friend of mine whom I love but whose politics run counter to mine recently returned from a trip to the Middle East. He went to Tel Aviv to march in the Gay Pride Parade. He did the whole country and spent a lot of time in Arab towns.

He said, “You know, Pamela, I was thinking about you there, because when you and I talked about Obama a year or so ago, and you discussed his Muslim stepfather and schooling, etc., I thought, she’s off her rocker. But when I was in the [Muslim] quarter of Jerusalem …….  They kept talking about Muhammad until I finally said, ‘Muhammad? The prophet?’

“‘No!’ They excitedly replied. ‘Obama!!’ They call Obama Muhammad.” I thought that was fascinating. My friend went on to say, “They really think he is one of them. They think he is a Muslim. I was shocked.”

Give Generously to Bethlehem Deportees: 2000 Euro a month not enough!

Rome/Madrid – Ma’an – Bethlehem deportees declared an open hunger strike at the Palestinian embassy in Italy in protest of what they say are difficult living conditions in Europe.

Half a dozen of the men deported to Europe following the Israeli siege of the Nativity Church in Bethlehem say they are not receiving enough money from the Palestine Liberation Organization to cover their cost of living.

Spokesman of the deportees Jihad Ij’arah told Ma’an that those deported to Italy say Palestinian official’s “ignorance and carelessness” over their situation has resulted in many of the men having their water and electricity cut off from their homes and others being threatened with eviction as they are unable to pay high rents in European cities.

The deportees are reportedly entitled to 2000 Euro each month, with an additional 150 Euro to provide for their families, most of who remain in the West Bank.

Ij’arah said he had attempted to contact PLO member Sa’eb Erekat, and sent letters to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
