Mr Husic, the son of Yugoslavian migrants, is the first Muslim elected to federal parliament and will today become the first MP sworn in by the Chief Justice of the High Court with his hand on a copy of the Koran.
The Blacktown-based former national president of the Communications Electrical and Plumbing Union arrived in Canberra yesterday carrying with him the Koran of his proud migrant parents who will watch on from the public gallery as he takes his oath.
While downplaying his religion and the significance of his contribution to Australian political history, the MP for Chifley said “getting elected to parliament, full stop, is an enormous privilege”.
But Mr Husic conceded others might well see his oath as a significant moment for Muslim Australians.
“Given my background, there are some people taking a small slice of pride or happiness.”

Here’s an interesting aside for Atlas readers. A friend of mine whom I love but whose politics run counter to mine recently returned from a trip to the Middle East. He went to Tel Aviv to march in the Gay Pride Parade. He did the whole country and spent a lot of time in Arab towns.
He said, “You know, Pamela, I was thinking about you there, because when you and I talked about Obama a year or so ago, and you discussed his Muslim stepfather and schooling, etc., I thought, she’s off her rocker. But when I was in the [Muslim] quarter of Jerusalem ……. They kept talking about Muhammad until I finally said, ‘Muhammad? The prophet?’

The controlled media has continued with its deception over the effects of immigration by covering up the reality behind the latest riots in France. Rather than name the culprits as Third World colonisers from Muslim North Africa, they’ve described the perpetrators as “youths.”
The latest unrest – which has seen more than 300 vehicles torched overnight in Paris as the culmination of three days successive rioting in southern France – is being described as ‘traditional Bastille Day rioting’ by the BBC and the wire services.
The rioting in the south of France was also committed by North African colonisers after a 21 year-old man ‘of Algerian origin’ hanged himself in a police cell in the town of Firminy.
According to the extremist leftist Guardian newspaper, the ‘youths’ in Firminy have burned local shops, torched dozens of cars and have stoned the police. The local bakers, chemist, tobacconist and hairdressing salon were razed. Two hundred riot police were brought in to control rioters with teargas and plastic bullets.
