FIVE Muslim men planned an armed terrorist attack on a Sydney army base to further the cause of Islam by killing as many people as possible, a Supreme Court jury heard today.

They wanted to further the cause of Islam, but hey,  nothing to see here, look away: “The Islamic faith is not on trial,” Justice King said. “It isn’t about being a Muslim.”

Prosecutor Nick Robinson SC said the men took a number of steps in preparation for the attack, including sending one of their number to Somalia to obtain a fatwa or religious decree to permit the plan to go ahead.

Mr Robinson said members of the group used the code “the man who has gone to Perth” when talking about Yacqub Khayre’s trip in search of a fatwa.

The plan was that five or six men armed with high powered weapons would enter the Holsworthy Army Base and fire at and kill as many people as possible before they were either killed or overwhelmed.

They planned to use weapons that could fire at least 60 bullets.

On trial are Saney Edow Aweys, 26, Mr Khayre, 22, Abdirahman Mohamud Ahmed, 25, and Wissam Mahmoud Fattal, 33,and Nayef El Sayed, 25.

English Defence League members attend New York mosque protest

Members of the far-right English Defence League protested in New Yorkthis weekend against plans for an Islamic cultural centre and mosque near Ground Zero.

The group’s leader, who goes by the pseudonym Tommy Robinson, and at least seven other EDL supporters flew to the US to oppose the plans on the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Robinson was refused entry at JFK airport, taken into custody and flown straight back to the UK, according to a report published on the anti-Islam Gates of Vienna website sourced to EDL activists travelling with him.  (More)

This comes after his threat that “anger will explode” among Muslims if the Qur’an burning went forward. Honestly, though, such thinly veiled threats are tantamount to a denial of free will in the Muslim world.

Rauf has gotten a free bully pulpit there to lecture America on arrogance, and peddle tired platitudes about common values and tolerance.

You’ve got to admit, the man knows arrogance — a fact amply demonstrated by the attitude with which he and his fellow developers have approached the mosque project: We’re going to build it, and you’re going to tolerate it.

In fact, you’re going to like it, or you must be chock-full of hatred.

As noted here before, any other developer seeking to make such a major change to an area — let alone one so sacred and emotionally charged– for the sake of his project would encounter resistance and questions about the merits, purpose, and funding of that project. It would be all the more so for a developer that acted so aggressively, and with such a sense of entitlement.

And arrogance.

A lawyer who videoed himself smoking what appeared to be joints made with pages from the Bible and the Koran expects to lose his job at a Queensland university.

In the video, posted on YouTube, Queensland University of Technology staffer Alex Stewart compares cigarettes made with pages from the two holy texts.

In the clip, titled “Bible or Koran – which burns best?”, the professed atheist says burning religious books is no big deal and people need to get over it.

“We condemn it and our feelings have been hurt by this man,” Sheik Muhammad Wahid told AAP.

“There is no need for this kind of thing, just to create disunity and disharmony among people living in Australia.

(We all know that Muslims  have contributed tremendously to create unity and harmony in Australia.)

Mr Stewart, an assistant organiser with a group called Brisbane Atheists, was not at his Brisbane home on Monday but in a message on the group’s website he said he expected to be sacked.

“I’m screwed. I think I will lose my job over this. Damn it,” he wrote.

He defended the stunt, saying basic freedoms, such as freedom of speech, should not be threatened simply because someone might be offended.
