The new head of police domestic extremist units was condemned today after denying that the English Defence League was a right-wing extremist group.
Detective Chief Superintendent Adrian Tudway, who took over the role of national co-ordinator for domestic extremism last week, claimed police had to walk a “tightrope” when targeting small groups which they believe are bent on violence.

No choice but to shoot the armed robbers, police say (Daily Telegraph)
SENIOR police yesterday defended the shooting of two would-be robbers, saying officers had “no choice” but to open fire despite having shadowed the men for hours.
Ali Antoni El Hafiane, 19, of Condell Park, was killed and his alleged accomplice was injured when shot by two police officers in the beer garden of Condell Park’s High Flyer Hotel on Monday.
Just seconds earlier, the balaclava-clad men, one allegedly wielding a machete, had been confronted by an undercover officer inside the pub.
Five shots were discharged by at least two officers and ” … in my opinion, the officers had no choice other than to act in the way that they did,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Geoff Beresford said.
“In my opinion, it was an extremely brave act. They were confronted with a life-threatening situation and they did everything they could to protect members or patrons of the hotel and themselves.”
Brigitte Gabriel, founder of ACT! for America, explains that students are required to become a Muslim for three weeks, adopt Muslim names, memorize verses from the Quran, and visit a mosque for a field trip. If students try their best on assignments, she says, they will be guaranteed a good grade.
Students in these programs, laments the conservative activist, must also recite the Islamic prayer for salvation, which describes Islam as a straight path to God — and Christianity in error.
“Here’s what they’re teaching in the public schools; [here’s] what they’re telling the students they have to memorize and recite,” she says — “‘Praise be to Allah, Lord of Creation, the compassionate, the merciful, king of judgment day. You alone we worship, and to you alone we pray for help.'”
Gabriel sees more than a little inconsistency in how the material is being presented. “Remember, this is public school where we can’t even say we have a Christmas break — we have a ‘winter break,'” she exclaims. “Where we can’t even say we have Easter break — it’s now called ‘spring break.'”
The ACT! for America president explains that Islamic ideologies are prevalent in textbooks, such as the way the term “jihad” is explained. She says instead of portraying the idea as one of violence and bloodshed, the texts describe it as a struggle against oppression — the same description that al-Qaeda presents.
She argues that “what they’re doing is literally brainwashing our students to prepare them to turn against our own soldiers and our own military and government by basically feeding them the talking points of al-Qaeda.”
Gabriel contends that if students were to recite Bible verses, adopt Christian names, and learn a Christian prayer for salvation, many Americans would be infuriated, arguing it violates the alleged separation of church and state. But because of political correctness, she says, Islamic indoctrination is allowed in public schools.
Interesting news in a Washington Timeseditorial this morning. It is all worth reading, including the first part, which deals with the strong evidence that, in funding Imam Feisal Rauf’s sojourn to the Arabian Peninsula, the State Department is effectively paying for him to raise funds for the Ground Zero mosque project — broadly opposed by Americans who are also being kept in the dark about its financing.

Americans also may be surprised to learn that the United States has been an active participant in mosque construction projects overseas. In April, U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania Alfonso E. Lenhardt helped cut the ribbon at the 12th-century Kizimkazi Mosque, which was refurbished with assistance from the United States under a program to preserve culturally significant buildings. The U.S. government also helped save the Amr Ebn El Aas Mosque in Cairo, which dates back to 642. The mosque’s namesake was the Muslim conqueror of Christian Egypt, who built the structure on the site where he had pitched his tent before doing battle with the country’s Byzantine rulers. For those who think the Ground Zero Mosque is an example of “Muslim triumphalism” glorifying conquest, the Amr Ebn El Aas Mosque is an example of such a monument – and one paid for with U.S. taxpayer funds.
The mosques being rebuilt by the United States are used for religious worship, which raises important First Amendment questions. U.S. taxpayer money should not be used to preserve and promote Islam, even abroad. In July 2009, the Office of the Inspector General published an audit of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) faith-based and community initiatives that examined whether government funds were being used for religious activities. The auditors found that while USAID was funding some religious activities, officials were “uncertain of whether such uses of Agency funding violate Agency regulations or the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution” when balanced against foreign-policy objectives.
For example, our government rebuilt the Al Shuhada Mosque in Fallujah, Iraq, expecting such benefits as “stimulating the economy, enhancing a sense of pride in the community, reducing opposition to international relief organizations operating in Fallujah, and reducing incentives among young men to participate in violence or insurgent groups.” But Section 205.1(d) of title 22 of the Code of Federal Regulations prohibits USAID funds from being used for the rehabilitation of structures to the extent that those structures are used for “inherently religious activities.” It is impossible to separate religion from a mosque; any such projects will necessarily support Islam.
There is no good reason for our government to be doing “Muslim outreach.” The State Department’s chosen emissaries — folks like Rauf and Abdurrahman Alamoudi (now serving a 23-year prison sentence) — are not representative of American opinion (there are already plenty of people in the Gulf happy to trash the United States, we don’t need to add to their number). If we’re looking to cut useless spending, “Muslim outreach” would be an excellent place to start.
That aside, though, someone in Congress needs to get to the bottom of whether this government is also underwriting Islamic religious institutions, and doing so in violation of U.S. law. And wholly apart from questions of legality and utility, Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf states Rauf is visiting are swimming in petro-dollars — why can’t they fund icons of Islamic supremacism on their own . . . maybe using the money they’d otherwise spend on the hate literature they produce for American Islamic centers?
The question is: why should we care? Why should we, the non-Muslim majority, bother about what Muslim clerics have to say about anything? Are they not the same people who are religiously obliged to terrorize us? Shouldn’t they be told to STFU and take a camel or a magic carpet ride if they don’t follow our rules?
By the way, if you think Gitmo is a “recruiting tool” for jihad, what do you think thousands of infidel men peering at what Islamobabes look like under their burkas is likely to be? Right now, an enraged imam boarding at Newark with his four wives is the best shot at stopping this nonsense.
Saying that body scanners violate Islamic law, Muslim-American groups are supporting a “fatwa” — a religious ruling — that forbids Muslims from going through the scanners at airports.
The Fiqh Council of North America — a body of Islamic scholars that includes some from Michigan — issued a fatwa this week that says going through the airport scanners would violate Islamic rules on modesty.
“It is a violation of clear Islamic teachings that men or women be seen naked by other men and women,” reads the fatwa issued Tuesday. “Islam highly emphasizes haya (modesty) and considers it part of faith. The Quran has commanded the believers, both men and women, to cover their private parts.”
The decision could complicate efforts to intensify screening of potential terrorists who are Muslim.
Oh, surely not. The obvious solution would be for Muslims to bypass the full-body scanner and go straight through the express check-in, while crack TSA operatives while away the day photographing the private parts of eight-year old girls. This seems the logical end point of airport security. I know I feel safer already.

On platform one at Bolton train station in England a mob of about 100 men punch the air in unison as a chant – “Muslim bombers, off our streets!” – goes up. Their voices echo loudly, and as more men suddenly appear, startled passengers move aside. The protesters wave St George’s Cross flags – the red and white English national emblem – and raise placards. Some wear balaclavas, others black-hooded tops. There is an air of menace.
These are some of the most violent football hooligans in Britain and today they have joined in an unprecedented show of strength. Standing shoulder to shoulder are notorious gangs such as Cardiff City’s Soul Crew, Bolton Wanderers’ Cuckoo Boys and Luton Town’s Men In Gear: a remarkable gathering given that on a match day these men would be fighting each other. But today they are not here for football; it is politics that has drawn them. Their destination is Manchester to support a protest by the newly formed English Defence League.
The police are here in force, too. “Take that mask off,” barks a sergeant to one young man. The man does so immediately but retorts: “Why are they allowed to wear burqas in public but we’re not allowed to cover our faces?” The sergeant snaps back: ”Just do what you’re told.”
A man with a West Country accent standing next to me says: “It’s always the fxxxxx’ same these days. One rule for them and another for us. I’m sick of this fxxxxx’ country.” He draws on a cigarette before flicking it to the ground in disgust. He starts to complain again, but when the public address system announces the arrival of the train to Manchester Piccadilly, he raises his hands above his head and starts another football favourite: “Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves …”

Liberal senator Cory Bernardi raised the issue during a Senate estimates hearing today, querying why some people were being asked by security officers at the entrances to remove their hats or other headwear while others, such as those wearing facial veils, were not.

Disturbing conclusions from the U.S.: A senior government official has made astounding statements about the ban on minarets in Switzerland. Before the assembled world press, he explained clearly that the Federal Council was working to overturn the result of the referendum. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA), according to the “Sonntag” newspaper, reacts with surprise.
In his statement as the head of the Human Rights Division in the U.S. State Department, Michael Posner, told the media the following on Wednesday, when the conversation turned to alleged harassment of Muslims in Western Europe
“The Government of Switzerland – and I’ve spoken repeatedly with their representatives -. Is now working hard to overturn the ban (on minarets.)”
Mohamed Elibiary is a proponent of Sayyid Qutb, founder of the Muslim Brotherhood. Elbiary also admires and praises the “great Islamic visionary,” Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca seems more interested in currying favor with radical Muslim groups than fighting terror. He’s even invited one to lecture police about “radicalization.”
