Blair pressed on prisoner exchange deal

THERE were renewed calls today for Prime Minister Tony Blair to explain fully a prisoner exchange deal with the Libyans, amid claims that the Lockerbie bomber was central to the agreement.

Number 10 has denied claims that Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi, serving life in a Scottish jail for the 1988 outrage, is included in the memorandum struck last month.

First Minister Alex Salmond said he wanted an answer “forthwith” to a letter he had written protesting to the Prime Minister about the deal.

Mr Salmond suggested the arrangement could lead to the transfer of Megrahi and complained Scotland was not consulted in advance.

Sources close to the agreement made on May 29 were today reported to have said the Lockerbie bomber was the “whole point” of the talks in Libya.

The source said: “Megrahi was the whole point of the talks as far as the Libyans are concerned.

“It was made perfectly clear to the British officials involved in the talks that the whole aim for them was to get Megrahi back.”

Responding to the claim, a spokesman for the First Minister said: “We believe that the Prime Minister must answer the substantive questions from the First Minister in very earliest course.”

News of the reformation of Libyan strongman “Colonel” Muammar Gaddafi (He of the Many Spellings) may have been premature. He now says he’ll release the doctor and nurses ludicrously convicted of injecting children with AIDS, if the EU and the US compensate the “victims’ families,” and release the terrorist convicted of the Lockerbie bombing: Bulgaria: Qaddafi Wants Money and Lockerbie Attacker for Nurses’ Release. Muammar Qaddafi has officially stated his conditions for the release of the five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor sentenced to death in Libya, a website of the Libyan opposition claims.

Cited by the Bulgarian national radio, the site claims that Qaddafi has sent an official note to the EU country members and the US, requesting compensations for the families of the HIV-infected children and the release of the terrorist from Lockerbie.

In his note Qaddafi admitted that there were problems in his country’s health system. He vowed that if Bulgaria pardons Libya’s debt, then Libya would offer the Balkan country options to take part in programs for fixing Libya’s health system.

Libya, BP to sign $900m oil deal

Libya announced on Tuesday it will sign a $900-million exploration deal with British energy giant BP, which London says plans to return the North African country after a 33-year absence.

“We are going to sign with BP an oil-exploration and -prospecting accord on Libyan territory worth $900-million,” said the head of Libya’s National Oil Corporation, Shokri Ghanem.

The announcement came ahead of a visit to the oil-rich nation by British Prime Minister Tony Blair who is starting a tour of Africa before he leaves office next month.

“BP will be announcing that they’re going back into Libya,” a spokesperson for Blair said, confirming that the outgoing premier was due to hold talks with Libyan leader Moammar Gadaffi.

There has not yet been any official confirmation from BP itself.

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries member is the African continent’s second-largest oil producer at 1,7-million barrels per day. It also has natural-gas reserves estimated at 1 314-billion cubic metres.

The Financial Times reported in January last year that BP had entered negotiations over a multibillion-dollar gas-exploration and -development agreement in Libya.

It said discussions involved a liquefied-natural-gas project that could supply the North American or European markets.

Libya is seeking massive investment to boost its energy sector, whose development was stunted under United Nations sanctions imposed after a United States airliner was downed in 1988 by a bomb over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing 270 people. — Sapa-AFP

Document: Iran Caught Red-Handed Shipping Arms to Taliban.

NATO officials say they have caught Iran red-handed, shipping heavy arms, C4 explosives and advanced roadside bombs to the Taliban for use against NATO forces, in what the officials say is a dramatic escalation of Iran’s proxy war against the United States and Great Britain.
“It is inconceivable that it is anyone other than the Iranian government that’s doing it,” said former White House counterterrorism official Richard Clarke, an ABC News consultant.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates stopped short earlier this week of blaming Iran, saying the U.S. did not have evidence “of the involvement of the Iranian government in support of the Taliban.”

But an analysis by a senior coalition official, obtained by the Blotter on ABCNews.com, concludes there is clear evidence of Iran’s involvement.

“This is part of a considered policy,” says the analysis, “rather than the result of low-level corruption and weapons smuggling.”

Iran and the Taliban had been fierce enemies when the Taliban was in power in Afghanistan, and their apparent collaboration came as a surprise to some in the intelligence community.

“I think their goal is to make it very clear that Iran has the capability to make life worse for the United States on a variety of fronts,” said Seth Jones of the Rand Institute, “even if they have to do some business with a group that has historically been their enemy.”

The coalition analysis says munitions recovered in two Iranian convoys, on April 11 and May 3, had “clear indications that they originated in Iran. Some were identical to Iranian supplied goods previously discovered in Iraq.”

NEW YORK – The investigation into the thwarted plot to bomb John F. Kennedy International Airport is widening beyond the four men in custody, with more suspects sought outside the U.S. for their suspected roles, a law enforcement official said Friday.

The defendants identified last weekend were “just a piece of it,” the official told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because of not being authorized to speak publicly. “We are definitely seeking more players. We are targeting others overseas.”

The official declined to provide details about the possible suspects, or in what countries they are being sought.

Law enforcement officials, through the use of an informant, were able to undermine the airport plot in its early stages.

The four suspects made trips to the airport, took video and photographs, drew diagrams and collected information. They then hoped to shop their information to individuals with the capacity to pull off their stated plan of causing “greater destruction than the Sept. 11 attacks,” the official said.

According to court documents, the men sought the help of Jamaat al Muslimeen, or JAM, a Muslim organization based in Trinidad — a known violent group involved in killings, kidnappings and weapons trafficking over the past two decades. The group staged a coup attempt in 1990, storming the Trinidad Parliament building and taking the prime minister hostage.

Some experts have called the plot far-fetched, saying it would have been virtually impossible to achieve the kind of destruction the suspects envisioned. But the official said that if the men had lined up with people who had the right resources, the plans could have been carried out in a short period of time.

Alleged mastermind Russell Defreitas, a U.S. citizen from Guyana, hatched the plan when he worked as a cargo employee at JFK 10 years ago, authorities said. He is being held in New York on conspiracy charges. His alleged co-conspirators, two citizens of Guyana and one from Trinidad, are in jail in Trinidad and were expected to fight extradition to New York.

Defreitas’ attorney, Drew Carter, was out of town and did not immediately return phone messages.

JFK terror plot informant is US citizen

The convicted drug dealer who blew the whistle on the JFK terror plot and has been named as an informant in the deposition against the four suspects, Guyanse nationals Russell Defreitas, Abdul Kadir and Abdel Nur, and Trinidadian Kareem Ibrahiim, has been identified as Terry DeSouza, a US citizen.

The Guyanese Police, reports out of Guyana said yesterday, have since taken DeSouza’s maid into custody for questioning.

DeSouza, of stocky build and a Muslim, reportedly told persons with whom he boarded while in Guyana that he was originally from the Dominican Republic, and gave them his number there as 917-301-6582. He told them that his Muslim name was Anas Nabdel.

The media is reporting his cell phone number?

Media reports suggested that a group of Muslim men broke their silence on his identity on Wednesday, noting too that DeSouza left owing them Guy$340,000 for boarding and lodging after he departed Guyana.

You mean to say we didn’t protect this man?

The men said that DeSouza, when he arrived in Guyana, expressed an interest in establishing a fat-pork (a fruit in abundance in Linden) project. He was interested too in lime soap and exporting boards and staves.

The men said it was they who took him to Linden and while there he was introduced to Kadir.

They subsequently parted ways with him after he began showing an interest in Adnan Gulshair el-Shukrijumah, a nuke phantom being targeted by the FBI and one of Osama Bin Laden’s henchmen.

DeSouza reportedly told the men he had a message for el-Shukrijumah, and had requested that the Guyanese men accompany him to Trinidad and Tobago for a meeting with el-Shukrijumah, reports said.

El Shakrujumah is the son of a Guyanese man who headed a masjid in Florida. Subsequent to the news that the son was one of the most wanted people, the members of the mosque sacked El Shakrujumah’s father, who later became ill.

Paris Hilton Gets Out of Jail for Medical Reasons

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Hotel heiress Paris Hilton was released from jail on Thursday for medical reasons after serving just three days of a three-week term, but was confined to her home with an electronic ankle bracelet for 40 days.

Steve Whitmore of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office declined to specify the medical issue that led to her “reassignment” or say why she could not be treated in jail.

The 26-year-old hotel Hilton Hotel heiress and star of reality television show “The Simple Life” turned herself in late on Sunday night to begin a jail term for violating her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

Citing sources close to Hilton’s family, the syndicated TV show “Entertainment Tonight” reported on its Web site that the health problem was a rash that she developed on her body.

Los Angeles County detention facilities, like many jails around the country, are known to have problems controlling outbreaks of staphylococcus infections, which can cause rashes, but Whitmore said staph was not an issue in Hilton’s case.

Whitmore said only that Hilton’s move was done after extensive consultation among various parties involved, including the sentencing judge and the sheriff.

Hilton, a symbol of privilege and American celebrity culture whose great-grandfather, Conrad, started the global Hilton Hotel empire, was taken to her house in the Hollywood Hills early on Thursday morning, Whitmore said.

Hilton was originally sentenced to 45 days in jail. But her jail term was effectively cut to just 23 days under state sentencing guidelines that give inmates one day’s credit for each day of incarceration.

Hilton began her short-lived jail stay just hours after attending the MTV Movie Awards near Hollywood, where she was the butt of comedians’ jokes.

HOME CONFINEMENT

Under the home-confinement order, her sentence was increased back to 45 days, but Whitmore said she would be credited with five days incarceration, including Sunday and Thursday, even though she actually only spent three full days in jail.

Iran summons Spanish envoy over stance on Israel remarks.

Iran has summoned Spain’s ambassador to express its protest over Madrid’s reaction to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s recent remarks against Israel, semiofficial Iranian news agencies reported Thursday.

On Sunday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the world would witness the destruction of Israel soon, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

A day later, Spain voiced its objection to the comments, with officials saying Madrid would summon Iran’s ambassador to condemn the verbal attack. Spain’s Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos called Ahmadinejad’s comments unacceptable.

In response, Iran’s Foreign Ministry director for Western Europe, Ebrahim Rahimpour, on Thursday told the Spanish ambassador that the Spain’s stance was a surprise and hasty, the ISNA and Mehr news agencies reported in Iran.

Rahimpour also criticized Spain, saying it has been silent over Israel Defense Forces attacks on Palestinians, the reports said.

BBC reporter Alan Johnston has been held since March 26 by a terrorist group in Gaza, where he had been the last international journalist to keep living and working. He appeared last Thursday in a video wearing an orange sweatshirt and reading a prepared statement. Meanwhile British soldiers are under attack by Muslim and Arab terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq, and fifteen British sailors were recently kidnapped and held in harsh conditions for two weeks by Iran.

Closer to home, a survey found one-quarter of British Muslims expressing sympathy for the London bombers of July 7, 2005, and British intelligence estimates that about 16,000 of them are capable of carrying out such attacks themselves. Indeed, last August 11 the left-wing Guardian reported that British Muslim “suicide bombers were within days of blowing up 12 passenger jets above five US cities in an unprecedented terrorist attack designed to commit [quoting intelligence sources] ‘mass murder on an unimaginable scale.’”

Yet Britain’s University and College Union, made up of university academics, as well as other groups have figured out who their real enemies are . . . the Jews.

Last Wednesday, the UCU voted 158-99 to “circulate the full text of the Palestinian boycott call to all branches” and to “encourage members to consider the moral implications of existing and proposed links with Israeli academic institutions.” British journalists’, doctors’, and architects’ unions have also recently proposed boycotts of Israel, the Anglican Church has decided to divest from companies cooperating with it, and later this month UNISON, Britain’s largest trade union, is to vote on cutting economic ties with the Jewish state.

The UCU’s resolution “notes that Israel’s 40-year occupation has seriously damaged the fabric of Palestinian society through annexation, illegal settlement, collective punishment and restriction of movement” and “deplores the denial of educational rights for Palestinians by invasions, closures, checkpoints, curfews, and shootings and arrests of teachers, lecturers and students.” It also “condemns the complicity of Israeli academia in the occupation, which has provoked a call from Palestinian trade unions for a comprehensive and consistent international boycott of all Israeli academic institutions.”

The resolution does not include a single mention of: Palestinian terrorism against Israel; Israel’s total withdrawal from Gaza including the destruction of decades-old Israeli villages and even the exhuming of all Israeli graves; the 1993 Oslo agreement and Israel’s transfer of civil administration in the West Bank (and Gaza) to a Palestinian government that Israel created; Israel’s 2000 offer of full statehood to the Palestinians; or the fact that all universities now existing in the West Bank and Gaza have been established since Israel took control of these territories in 1967.

Gone, wiped from the record; in the UCU resolution, none of this ever existed. Israel engages in “invasions, closures, checkpoints, curfews, and shootings and arrests” out of sheer evil and malice; it has never witnessed waves of suicide terrorists blowing bus passengers, café patrons, and hotel guests to bits, thousands of rockets falling on towns and farms, or genocidal exhortations on official Palestinian TV—all of it Orwelled out of reality.

DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) _ A court this week upheld a German state’s ban on teachers wearing the Muslim head scarf in public schools, rejecting a woman’s appeal against a decision not to employ her.

North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state, is one of several regions that have introduced head scarf bans for teachers in recent years.

The 28-year-old plaintiff had argued that the state’s law was discriminatory and violated her religious freedom.

However, the administrative court in Duesseldorf said regional law did not allow for religious statements that might infringe on the state’s neutrality toward students and parents. Presiding judge Kurt Buechel argued that wearing a head scarf does to some extent constitute an expression of religious conviction.

Authorities in Duesseldorf had refused to employ the teacher on the grounds that she was not prepared to go without a head scarf in classes.

It was not immediately clear whether the teacher, whose name was not released, would appeal.
