Italy said an NGO ship carrying 179 migrants will be turned away from Italian ports and redirected to international waters once minors and vulnerable people have disembarked.
Speaking to journalists on Friday following a cabinet meeting, newly-installed Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said the government had adopted a decree requiring German-flagged vessel Humanity 1 — currently anchored off Sicily — to remain in Italy’s waters only temporarily.
“That will be only for the time necessary to check for emergencies on board, whether health-related or otherwise,” Piantedosi said, according to Italian press agency Adnkronos. Piantedosi said children, pregnant women and people in ill health will be let into Italy.
Nearly 250 people have been allowed to disembark after being shunned by Italy’s government as ‘residual cargo’.
The remaining passengers on two humanitarian ships that Italy had initially refused to take in have been allowed to disembark, as another vessel carrying 234 people headed to France in the hope of a safe port.

Clearly the inference is that legislation must reflect the will of the people. Yet today, in Australia, legislation so often reflects only the wishes of those in power, with no consideration for the wishes of the people.

Given the choice, how many rank and file Australians would be in favour of empowering the government to dictate to doctors how they may advise and treat their patients?

Quite apart from being a blatant abuse of power and trust, elements of the Bill appears to be in contravention of the “Declaration Of Geneva 1948”, one of the oldest policies of the World Medical Association, enacted in response to the Nazi medical atrocities of World War II.
