Moroccans react strongly to fatwa authorising underage marriage

A Moroccan cheikh has said parents may marry off their underage girls. Human rights and children’s advocacy organisations, and many Moroccans, have denounced the fatwa, saying it “endorses rape”.

[Naoufel Dekkaki] Moroccan Cheikh Mohammed Maghraoui has caused indignation among rights groups and citizens who denounce his recent fatwa authorising the marriage of nine-year-old girls.

Moroccans and rights groups are speaking out against a recent fatwa that would allow parents to marry off their underage daughters.

Opponents to Cheikh Mohammed Maghraoui’s fatwa say the marriage of nine-year-old girls is a violation of human rights in general, and children’s rights in particular.

Maghraoui said that at the age of nine, girls are capable of marriage, just like Aisha was when the Prophet Mohammed married her.

“We thought we were rid of those problems after the passage of the family code, which included a number of guarantees to protect children from early marriage, and after setting up the Fatwa Council,” the Democratic League of Women’s Rights (LDDF) said in a statement.

The fatwa “endorses rape and child abuse of a nine-year-old child,” the LDDF statement continued, adding that the organisation believes the fatwa goes against the children rights’ convention and the traditions of the Moroccan people.

(IsraelNN.com) The Muslim Fatah-controlled authority in Judea and Samaria is encouraging a “sharp demographic shift” in Bethlehem, where the Christian population went from a 60 percent majority in 1990 to a 40 percent minority in 2000, to about 15 percent of the city’s total population today.

It is estimated that, for the past seven years, more than one thousand Christians have been emigrating from the Bethlehem area annually and that only 10,000 to 13,000 Christians remain in the city. International human rights lawyer Justus Reid Weiner, who teaches at Hebrew University, told the Jerusalem Institute for Global Jewish Affairs that, under the PA-Fatah regime, Christian Arabs have been victims of frequent human rights abuses by Muslims.

Al Jazeera boss: Ibrahim Helal has been accused of sexism towards white British journalist Jo Burgin

A ‘sexist’ Arab boss at Al Jazeera television had the management skills of Saddam Hussein, a tribunal heard today.

Ibrahim Helal also tried to censor ‘anti-Islamic’ news stories such as the arrest of British teacher Gillian Gibbons in Sudan and the kidnap of BBC journalist Alan Johnston in Gaza, it was said.

Mr Helal is deputy managing director of the Arabic news channel’s English language service which is being sued for £1million by journalist Jo Burgin.

She is claiming sex, race and religious discrimination, saying she was sacked for being a white, British, Christian woman.

Most moderate Muslims do not know the real teaching of the Koran and many of them have never read it. In debates between the moderates and the radicals about the Koran, the radical always win the arguments because Islamic law is on their side. They can quote you chapter and verse from the Koran to support their arguments while the moderates just sit speechless not knowing how to respond.”
