Stand for free speech

To Westerners and moderate Muslims shocked by the radical form of Islam now topping nightly newscasts, the efforts of liberal-minded Muslims like Tawfik Hamid, Italian Sheikh Abdul Hadi Palazzi and a handful of others may seem like the perfect solution. Not so for Ali Sina, who has a different suggestion: destroy Islam.

Sina, who runs Faith Freedom International – an Internet forum dedicated to debunking Islam – calls himself “probably the biggest anti-Islam person alive.” The publication of his latest book, Understanding Muhammad: A Psychobiography of Allah’s Prophet, will likely cement that position. In it, Sina suggests that Islam’s central figure suffered from a series of mental disorders, including narcissistic personality disorder, temporal lobe epilepsy and obsessive compulsive disorder.

“These disorders,” he says via telephone, “can explain the phenomenon known as Islam… which is nothing but one man’s insanity.”

Police rape of Afghan boys ignored

Canadian soldiers say they have witnessed children selling themselves for sex with Afghan police forces.

OTTAWA -Canadian soldiers in the main guard tower at forward operating base Wilson last summer winced when I asked about the sudden lineup of teenage boys along the mud walls of the neighbouring Afghan market.

“Wait a few minutes. You’ll see,” said one, his lip curling. “It’s disgusting.”

Sure enough, a handful of uniformed Afghan police officers emerged from their rundown detachment, walked through the barricades and started chatting up the dozen or so teens, some looking decidedly pre-teen.

A few minutes after they returned, the selected kids were waved through the main gates and went straight inside the police station. An hour later, when I left the observation post, the boys were still inside.

This evening ritual is often derided by soldiers as man-love Thursdays.

The Prime Ministry’s Human Rights Directorate issued a report on “honor killings,” which contains discouraging findings, daily Radikal reported Friday.

In Istanbul, at least one person dies every week because of honor killings according to the report, which is the most comprehensive in its field. The number of murders committed for honor in the last five years has exceeded 1,000. The murderers are treated as heroes in prisons and they do not regret their crimes.

“The Report on Honor Killings” was presented by the president of the Prime Ministry’s Human Rights Directorate, professor Dr. Tahsin FendoÄŸlu, at a meeting called “Women and Participation: Problems and Solutions.” According to the report, the number of honor killings was 150 in 2002, while it rose to 220 in 2007. Occurrence of honor killings is inversely proportional with education levels. Not only women but also men fall victim to honor killings. Besides, around 9 percent of the murders are committed by children.

The report declares that metropolitan cities are leading crime scenes of honor killings. In the last five years, 167 people were murdered in Istanbul. Ankara followed with 144, İzmir with 121, and Diyarbakır with 69. The crimes were mostly perpetrated by people with origins in eastern Turkey. The report states that the number of honor killings in Istanbul increased to 53 in 2007 from 27 in 2006.

One of Britain’s most senior ethnic minority police officers is facing an investigation into his expenses, the Mail can reveal.

The probe comes just three months after Ali Dizaei was controversially promoted to a top Scotland Yard job.

The Met commander, who has infuriated colleagues by repeatedly alleging racism in the force, is alleged to have used his work credit card for a massive spending spree in the United States.

The Iranian-born president of the National Black Police Association is being investigated over claims that he spent nearly £5,000 on perfume, designer clothes, expensive shoes and visits to bars and clubs.

His purchases, which are understood to have been made last summer, came to light shortly after his much-criticised elevation to the rank of commander on a salary of £90,000.

When challenged, the father-ofthree apparently claimed he was unaware of the rules on using his force credit card. He then belatedly wrote a cheque for £4,700 to cover his ‘private expenditure’.

Kuala Lumpur, June 21: : An Indian origin man in Malaysia sentenced to 36 years in jail for repeatedly raping his minor daughter, has appealed for a lighter term on the ground that he had used a condom.

“Justice should be tempered with mercy. The accused used a condom every time he committed the offence,” The New Strait Timesreported on Saturday quoting the rapist’s lawyer.

* Afghan poppy farmer pays off a debt with a daughter

The 49 year-old was sentenced to 36 years in jail by a sessions court in 2004 for raping his daughter between May 2003 and August 2004 while her mother was away at work.

The accused appealed against the sentence because it was his first offence and he was remorseful for his action.

“You mean it is okay to rape using a condom?” judge Tengku Baharudin responded in anger when the rapist’s lawyer, S I Rajah, made the request.

The appellate court said the sentence given by the sessions court was appropriate and it would send a strong message that such an act should not be condoned.

Deputy public prosecutor Aslina Joned told the court that the victim would get USD 1.50 from her father every time he raped her.

The victim’s class teacher had noticed that she was depressed and the girl told her what had happened. The girl’s father was arrested in August 2004 and he pleaded guilty to the charges in the session court.

*  Note how the emphasis in this story is entirely about what the British government ought to be doing to combat “radicalization” and “extremism,” with virtually nothing about Muslim communities’ responsibilities save the fact that many “distrust police and are reluctant to inform on extremists, preferring to deal with problems inside their communities.” That must not be allowed to serve as a cop-out for civic responsibility (or a cover for more sinister motives), particularly given the emphasis that has been placed on integration of immigrant communities in the country, and the stated unacceptability of “no-go zones” of any kind.

Aussie woman ‘posts call to jihad’

A YOUNG Australian woman says she is ready to join the army of Islam in a violent jihad with a declaration of war on YouTube.

Federal authorities are now investigating the video posting, in which she claims to be backed by firebrand cleric Sheik Haron

The video shows a woman with her face covered addressing the camera with a distinctive Australian accent as she declares her backing of the controversial cleric.

“I can’t wait until we go to war on oppression,” the young woman says.

“I invite you to join the Army of Islam.”

The Australian Federal Police said today they are investigating whether the video breached any anti-terror or other laws.

Thursday, 19 June 2008 Police were appealing for witnesses today following the attempted murder of a man who was doused in petrol and set on fire in east London.
The 20-year-old, who is fighting for his life in hospital, was torched as he sat in his car in Forest Gate.

It is believed the Hindi victim, who suffered 65 per cent burns in the attack, was targeted because he was dating a Muslim girlfriend.

He had just parked his car, a green Honda Prelude, in St George’s Road when he was approached by the suspect or suspects and had petrol poured over him before being set alight….

Following six months of negotiations, Mohammed Abdul Kahar, 25, and Abul Koyair, 23, will get the payout as a ‘goodwill gesture’.

Last night it emerged that although the legal advice to the Yard was that they could fight the action, senior officers have decided to settle to avoid sparking ‘community’ tensions.
