Netherlands: 65% support ban on large mosques

According to a large survey prepared by TV program Netwerk and newspaper Nederlands Dagbald, 65% of the Dutch ‘agree’ or ‘completely agree’ that there should be a stop to the building of large mosques.

Bureau Intomart GfK questioned 1386 people, regarding their opinion about Islam in the Netherlands.

Most Dutch are concerned about the growth of Islam in the Netherlands and its influence on society.  At the same time, a majority are also concerned about the negative manner in which Geert Wilders and his Party for Freedom (PVV) speak about Islam.

* There has been an outcry in Belgium over a proposal to convert little-used churches into mosques. A senior official in Antwerp argues too many of the city’s churches stand empty most of the time and he has put forward suggestions to convert them into mosques to benefit the city’s large Muslim population.
Philip Heylen, who is deputy-mayor, says he wants to “break the taboo” over the future of the city’s churches, many of which have dwindling and ageing congregations. He shrugs:
“It’s a looming issue yet it seems impossible to have a debate about this, churches were built as places of worship and they should not be used as shopping malls. We’ve approached various religious groups and had a positive response from members of the Muslim community, which is open to the idea of converting them.”

(IsraelNN.com) Bar Ilan University political scientist Dr. Mordechai Kedar told a Moslem show host on the Arabic-language Al Jazeera television network, “Jews were in Jerusalem while your ancestors were drinking wine and blowing to idols.” In a heated debate with the narrator, he added, “We don’t need your permission to build” in the capital of Israel, Jerusalem.
The encounter occurred earlier this week, when Jews around the world celebrated Jerusalem Unification Day. Dr. Kedar has frequently appeared on the widely viewed Qatar-based network but this time encountered a sharp attack from the show’s host, Jimal Rian.

“Building in Jerusalem is another nail in the coffin in negotiations with the Palestinian Authority,” narrator Jimal Rian asserted. Dr. Kedar answered in fluent Arabic, “This was our capital 3,000 years ago, and we were here when your forefathers were drinking wine, burying girls alive and worshipping pre-Muslim idols. This is our city and it will be our city forever.”

His reference to Muslims drinking wine, which is forbidden in Islam, infuriated the host. Rian wagged his finger in the air and said excitedly, “If you want to talk about history, you cannot erase Jerusalem from the Koran, and don’t attack the Muslim religion if we want to continue talking.”

Dr. Kedar replied, “Jerusalem is not mentioned even once in the Koran. Jerusalem is a Jewish city.”

The Al Jazeera host responded by quoting a verse from the Koran in which he thought Jerusalem was mentioned by name, but stopped in the middle upon realizing that it only refers to “the farthest place.”

That would be Qur’an 17:1. “The farthest place” (al-aqsa) is identified in Islamic tradition with Jerusalem, but there is no mention of Jerusalem by name in that verse or in any other Qur’anic verse.

Dr. Kedar: “Jerusalem is not mentioned in the Koran even once. You can’t rewrite the Koran on air on Al Jazeera.”

He’s right. It isn’t.

Rian changed the subject to “settlements” and asked Dr. Kedar why Israel is building 1,000 new apartments and deciding to build thousands more while there are rumors that “Jerusalem will include all of the West Bank [Judea and Samaria]. The Bar Ilan researcher replied. “My friend, Israel is not counting the number of apartments that Qatar is building on the Qatar Peninsula so why are you doing so in Jerusalem? Jerusalem is our city forever and is not an issue for you, for Al Jazeera or for anyone else. Period. Jerusalem belongs only to Jews.
Replying to Rian’s question if Dr. Behar’s assessment is the basis for talks with the Palestinian Authority (PA), he declared, “My friend, I invite you to Jerusalem so you can see with your own eyes that it has become a flourishing city after it was in ruins under Arab rule until 1967. We rebuilt the city and opened it to Christians, Moslems and Jews equally, unlike under Muslim rule” that prohibited other religions….

MUSLIMS in the south-west have renewed their push to have a mosque based in Warrnambool to cater for their expanding community.
There are fears that unless a permanent place of worship can be established, moves to bring more migrant workers to the region will suffer.

``More workers will want to come here if there is a mosque,” Muslim community leader Mohamed Khanyari told The Standard yesterday.

He said in the past year more than 30 workers he had encouraged to Warrnambool for work had returned to Melbourne because there was no Islamic worship centre.

He will rally support from the district Muslim community on Saturday during a social barbecue from 1pm at Lake Pertobe and hopes to form a committee.

Mr Khanyari estimates there are up to 30 Muslim families in the district.

``We need a permanent base for worship. Now we have to travel to the mosque at Geelong,” he said.

“There are Muslims who would come from as far as Portland and Hamilton.

“Even international tourists who visit Warrnambool inquire about a mosque.”

Manila, 2 June (AKI) – A Catholic bishop on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao is backing Islamic rebels in their bid to establish an Islamic state.

Bishop Edwin Dela Pena of Marawi City, a town in the heart of the region dominated by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, said the government should take account of how an Islamic way of life may be lived by Muslims.

“It is about time that we give our brother and sister Muslims their aspirations for Mindanao,” he said in a statement posted in the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines’ website on Monday.

Dela Pena added that an Islamic state within the Philippines would allow Muslims to move freely in an Islamic environment without creating problems for Christians.

Christians are the majority in Mindanao, an island in the southern part of the Filipino archipelago once fully inhabited by Islam ethno-linguistic groups, collectively called Moros.

Christians moved to Mindanao and given land titles in a government-sponsored migration programme started by colonial power Spain and later the US.

The same program has also been carried out by most of the Christian-dominated Philippine governments that have held power since formal independence in 1946.

The MILF is the largest rebel group now advocating for a Bangsamoro – a Moro nation. The group is currently engaged in fragile peace talks with the central government.

The decades-long conflict is believed to have claimed more than 120,000 lives.

Norway: Muhammed cartoon

The debate rages in Norway about whether this is or isn’t a Muhammad cartoon.

Adresseavisen, a Norwegian newspaper, printed its very own ‘Muhammad cartoon’. Of course, most newspapers who reported about it, did not dare print it themselves, and at most sufficed with a picture of the paper. NRK brought a facsimile version.

Arne Blix, chief editor, realizes that cartoon is controversial, but thinks it’s necessary. This is Adresseavisen’s response to the attack against the Danish embassy. Blix doesn’t expect negative reactions from the Muslim world, and he doesn’t think it’s a cartoon of Muhammed and that it doesn’t attack Muhammed or Islam. He says it shows a terrorist who commits violence in the prophet’s name.

Adresseavisen’s cartoonist, Jan O. Henriksen, says that this is not a picture of Muhmmad. Henriksen says this cartoon is completely different from the Jyllands-Posten cartoons, since he didn’t draw it in order to be provocative. He didn’t agree with his colleagues who supported the Danish Muhammad cartoonists. He says that here he’s talking about people who hide behind religion in order to support terrorism. It’s provocative that people think that if somebody waves the Islam card than people will give in on any criticism of what is a real terrorist act.

Lawyer Abid Q. Raja thinks this is a cartoon of Muhammed and that the newspaper is hiding by saying this is a cartoon of a terrorist. If it would be a terrorist, he says, it would say “I am Muhammad, nobody dares stop me when I blow up suicidebombers.”

‘Asian man’ rapes 19-year-old girl  in Kings Road, Brighton

Woman raped on Brighton seafront

Police were looking for witnesses to a seafront rape tonight.

A 19-year-old girl reported the attack happened in Kings Road, Brighton, at 11.40pm yesterday.

She said an unknown man walked towards her between Buddies restaurant and the Old Ship Hotel, grabbed her around the waist, pulled her into a nearby doorway and raped her.

He is described as Asian-looking, under 30 years old, with very short black hair. He was wearing a white hooded top and a diamante earring.

They are not linking it to an allegation of attempted rape near the Old Ship Hotel on March 9.
