British Women Jailed in Middle East for ‘Trying to Rescue Abused Dogs’

Two British women have been jailed in the Gulf state Sultanate of Oman, for “trying to rescue abused animals”.

The pair were in the Middle East teaching English for the British Council, but ran afoul of a “cultural misunderstanding” with their Arab hosts when they attempted to “save two mistreated dogs” who had been left out in “scorching” heat by their “cruel” owner.

33-year-old Jennifer Green of Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, and her unnamed co-accused have been held for almost two weeks, according to her brother — “because it’s Ramadan, nothing is happening. I’m really worried and so is the entire family,” he said.

Australia vote: Concern about Islamophobia among smaller parties

Ahead of Saturday’s polls, activists are campaigning for Australians not to vote for parties with Islamophobic agenda.

Melbourne, Australia – Members of Australia‘s Muslim community are so concerned about hate speech and Islamophobic messaging among 10 political parties, including Pauline Hanson’s far-right One Nation, they are urging people not to give them their vote when polling stations open on Saturday.

The Islamic Council of Victoria says voters should carry out their research before casting their ballots and has sent out hundreds of how-not-to-vote cards to voters, naming the 10 parties about which it is most concerned.

The Council says the parties named in its list, including Fraser Anning‘s Conservative National Party and the Australian Conservatives, all have anti-Muslim immigration policies.

It says it was shocked at the response, with many voters unaware of the policies behind the parties.

“In no way should you preference these people because these parties are Islamophobic,” said Adel Salman, vice president of the Islamic Council of Victoria. “They’re all about hate speech in the community.”

Some of these parties say they will regulate Australia’s mosques, ban Muslim immigration and end what they describe as the “Islamisation of Australia”.

The Australia First Party’s leaflets list abolishing multiculturalism and reducing immigration as two of their key policies. Al Jazeera requested comment from Australia First Party but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

WordPress.com Blacklists Blogs Critical of Islam

Popular blog hosting platform WordPress.com has begun a censorship spree, blacklisting at least two blogs dedicated to monitoring the spread of radical Islam.

The blog Creeping Sharia, which documented what it describes as “the slow, deliberate, and methodical advance of Islamic law” was taken offline by WordPress earlier this week. Visitors navigating to the long-running blog are now met with the message “creepingsharia.wordpress.com is no longer available.”

“This blog has been archived or suspended in accordance with our Terms of Service,” explains the message.

On its official Twitter account, Creeping Sharia claimed that WordPress.com’s decision to suspend service followed a warning from the hosting platform that one of its posts violated Pakistani blasphemy law. WASHINGTON, DC — Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), during a House panel hearing on Thursday, complained that U.S. President Donald Trump has dramatically intensified American airstrikes in her native Somalia that have killed hundreds of members of the al-Qaeda affiliate al-Shabaab.

Describing herself as “an African on this committee,” she suggested that the Trump administration should “reassess” the way it deals with al-Shabaab and other jihadis in Somalia.

Her comments came during a hearing by the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Rwandans accused of 1999 tourist murders in Uganda secretly brought to Australia in deal with United States

Two Rwandan men accused of murdering tourists in 1999 were recently settled in Australia as part of a refugee swap, after spending years in US immigration detention.

Late on Thursday Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirmed the two men were in Australia. It came after government agencies spent hours refusing to do so.

US media outlet Politico reported that the two men involved in the killings of eight tourists in Uganda were brought to Australia in November as part of a contentious refugee swap first negotiated by former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and the Obama administration.

“I can confirm that the two individuals were subjected to strict security and character checks by our security agencies,” Mr Morrison said in a statement.

The Rwandan pair had been held in US immigration detention after efforts to convict them failed.

The Home Affairs Department had refused to comment on the report throughout the day, but Immigration sources confirmed to the ABC that the two accused murderers were settled in Australia last year.

Mr Morrison insisted the men underwent security checks relating to national security, criminality, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
