An exclusive private school in New Zealand has come under fire for banning students from wearing the hijab.

The Diocesan School for Girls, in Auckland, allegedly told Muslim pupils who wanted to wear the headscarf that it was not part of the school dress code.

The ban has come to light less than a week after Australian terrorist Brenton Tarrant allegedly targeted two mosques during Friday evening prayers, killing 50 Muslims.

In a statement to the New Zealand Herald the Diocesan’s principal Heather McRae, claimed the school celebrated diversity and inclusion but the uniform policy ‘(created) a sense of oneness and family.’

Following reports that a flood of New Zealand gun owners have been voluntarily surrending their firearms in the wake of last Friday’s Christchurch mosque attack that left 50 dead, the numbers are in on how many Kiwis actually handed over their weapons. 

Out of an estimated 1.2 million registered guns, New Zealand police report that as of Tuesday night, 37 firearms have been surrendered nationwide, according to BuzzFeed.

No accounting was provided of how many people owned those guns, the types of firearms, or where they were surrendered.

Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten have both blasted President Erdogan for telling local election campaign audiences that he would send anti-Muslim Australians “back in coffins like their grandfathers (who fought at Gallipoli).”

Senator Anning said in a statement today that President Erdogan’s comments showed Islam and the West were “incompatible.”

“In an anti-Western rant, Erdogan has made threats against Australians and New Zealanders who would commemorate the memory of our Anzacs,” he said.

“If you had any doubt that Islam and the civilised World are incompatible this threat should clear that up for you.”

An Italian bus driver of Senegalese descent was arrested on Wednesday after hijacking his own vehicle and setting it on fire, allegedly threatening to kill more than 50 children on board whose hands he had bound.

The 47-year-old man said he was acting in revenge for the thousands of migrants, many of them African, who have drowned in the Mediterranean in recent years while trying to reach Europe from Libya.

“No one will survive,” he said, according to police.

“He shouted ‘Stop the deaths at sea, I’ll carry out a massacre’,” said Marco Palmieri, a police spokesman.
