An Arabic-language video recently appeared of a Muslim cleric in Egypt addressing how terrorists misuse Islamic scriptures to justifying killing non-Muslims.  He was specifically addressing the bombing of Coptic Orthodox churches, which in recent years have left dozens of Christian worshippers dead in Egypt.

During his sermon, Sheikh Samir Hashish said that those Muslims who bomb churches and kill infidels often cite a sahih hadith (a statement attributed to Muhammad and deemed authentic), where the prophet said, “A Muslim must not be killed on account of a kafir [a non-Muslim, or infidel].” After saying that the hadith does not justify the outright slaughter of non-Muslims, Hashish elaborated:

The hadith itself is of course authentic… However, the hadith does not mean that whoever, without cause, kills any of the People of the Book [Christians and Jews] has done rightly.  Not at all—the hadith did not say this; it did not say those who do this are right.  The hadith simply excludes the death penalty from among the possible punishments.  In other words, the Muslim who kills a non-Muslim without cause—is he wrong or not?  He’s wrong.  Is he to be penalized or not?  He is to be penalized—but without the death penalty.  Let him be judged any which way, but do not kill him.  Why? Because of what the hadith says.  The prophet said, “a Muslim must not be killed on account of a kafir [infidel].”  Why?  Because their blood is not equal.  The blood of the Muslim is superior.  Call it racism or whatever you want, but of course the blood of the Muslim is superior.  This is not open to debate.  [Translation my own.]

What is notable is that, while the sheikh claims that radicals are twisting the hadith to say something it is not—that any Muslim who kills any infidel is exempt from any punishment—what the hadith is really saying—that the life of a Muslim is more precious than the life of a non-Muslim—is little better and possibly worse.

Nitpicking over details while ignoring the root problem—that is, “straining at gnats while swallowing camels,” to quote Christ (Matt. 23:24)—is increasingly how leading Muslim clerics disassociate Islam from the violence and intolerance performed in its name.

On March 15, 2019, the Al-Azhar Mosque in Belmore, a suburb of Sydney, Australia hosted an emergency panel discussion following the massacre at the mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. One of the speakers, Sheikh Jamil El-Biza, suggested that attack was the result of governments’ and politicians’ defense of freedom of speech. Sheikh Jalal Chami, another one of the panel members, said that it is an honor for the victims of the shooting to have died for Islam and that Muslims should be happy for them and pray that they are accepted as martyrs. He said: “We give our life freely for the sake of Allah and His religion.” Another panel member, Sheikh Omar Najjarine, said that people in Australia and New Zealand have thoughts of harming Muslims like the Christchurch shooter did. He also said that he felt jealousy towards the victims of the shooting because they entered Paradise, and he said that it is sad that most people would be thankful if they escaped or survived such a shooting, when they would have lost out on the blessing of dying as a martyr. Sheikh Najjarine added: “Who would ever think that a person in a non-Muslim country [who is not waging] Jihad could attain martyrdom. That’s not special?” The panel was streamed live on Al-Azhar Mosque’s Facebook page and was aired on Al-Jazeera TV with Arabic voice over. Sheikh Zoheir Abouhamza Issa, Sheikh Mohammad Anwar Sahib, and Sheikh Nassim Abdi also participated in the panel. Al-Azhar Mosque is part of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah Association Australia (ASWJ Australia), which has been the subject of media criticism in the past. So what did they say?

1. A muslim killed by an infidel in a mosque, goes straight to paradise;
2. Any muslim not killed by the infidel, should be/is jealous;
3. To avoid the killing by being late, is a cause for sadness, not happiness;
4. “Why are we mucking about paying rent, working, when all we should be asking for is to be killed by an infidel in a mosque”;

Deduction… “muslims are pleased at the killing, they support it, it is a good thing, and do not be sad for us, and offer condolences.”

Italy police rescue 51 children as driver torches school bus

He abducted 51 children, ordering their hands to be bound and threatening them with death, before setting the vehicle on fire.

Could it be terrorism? That’s a real headscratcher. The prosecutor said it cannot be ruled out. So what do we know? The busdriver was a (Mohammedan) from Senegal. Why was he in Italy? Why would you trust a such a creature with driving your children?

Italian police on Wednesday rescued some 50 children taken hostage by their school bus driver, who doused the vehicle in petrol and set it alight, the authorities said.

“It is a miracle, it could have been carnage. The police were outstanding, blocking the bus and getting the children off,” said Milan prosecutor Francesco Greco.

Greco added that he could not rule out a terrorist connection in the incident.

The 51 students in year two of secondary school were coming back from a sports outing accompanied by three adults when the driver abruptly changed route, announcing he was taking them all hostage.

“No one is getting out of here alive,” he said, according to several of the students.

Armed with two canisters filled with petrol and a cigarette lighter, he menaced the children, took their telephones and tied them up with electric cable.

Italy should reinstate the death penalty. Just for  this guy.

The demand throughout the west to restrict both private gun ownership and free speech are indicative of a more calculated clampdown, and of broader assumptions about control of the citizenry on all fronts.

So, if a Muslim of Afghan origin shoots up a gay nightclub in Florida and kills 49 people, that’s just one crazed loner and no broader lessons can be discerned from his act. On the other hand, if a white guy shoots up two mosques in New Zealand and kills 50 people, that indicts us all, and we need to impose worldwide restraints on free speech to make sure it doesn’t happen again. I’m ecumenical enough to mourn the dead in both gay clubs and mosques, but I wonder why we are so conditioned to accept Islamic terror as (in the famous words of London mayor Sadiq Khan) “part and parcel of living in a big city” that it is only the exceptions to the rule that prompt industrial-scale moral preening from politicians and media. [UPDATE: Utrecht isn’t that big a city – 350,000 – but it’s today’s designated “part and parcel“.]

The Christchurch killer published the usual bonkers manifesto before livestreaming his mass murder on Facebook. Brenton Tarrant purports to be an environmentalist – indeed, a self-described “eco-fascist” – who admires Communist China (notwithstanding, presumably, its indifference to environmentalism). He wants to massacre Muslims in order to save the planet:
