Belgian police stop attempted car-ramming attack in Antwerp

A person has been detained in Antwerp, Belgium, after attempting to drive his car into a busy shopping street at high speed, according to police.
.

The man is from Antwerp but is of North African descent, De Standaard reported. The man is believed to be a radicalized Muslim, according to the media.

A perimeter has been set up around the area and a bomb squad has been deployed. It remains unknown whether any weapons or other suspicious materials were found in the man’s car.

Additional officers and military personnel have been deployed throughout the city, according to Antwerp police.

It comes just one day after an assailant plowed his car into pedestrians near the British Parliament, as part of an attack in which a policeman was also stabbed to death.

UK police believe the incident was “Islamist related,” but have given no details about the attacker, who they believe was acting alone.

It also comes just one day after the first anniversary of the Brussels bombings, which led to the deaths of 32 people at Brussels airport and Maalbeek metro station. More than 300 others were injured in the attacks.

The problem isn’t wether the London attacker was British-born or not. The problem is that Islam is incompatible with Western Civilization.

It is just as irrelevant whether ISLAMIC State or any known Islamic terrorist organisation  claimed responsibility for the London terror attack. Every Muslim can self-radicalise by reading Qur’an, sira & hadith.

So he was not “lone,” an insulting euphemism. There are no lone wolves in the global jihad. According to PM May he was only a peripheral figure. Whatever that means. A Home Office quarterly report on the policing of terrorism in the UK, published this month, said 46 of them (64 per cent) were released after serving their sentences, but would be subject to strict licence conditions, in a bid to prevent reoffending.

The other 26 released had been held on remand prior to a charge or conviction.

The report said: “A total of 72 prisoners held for terror-related and domestic extremism/separatism offences were released from custody in Great Britain in the year ending September 30 2016.

“Of these, 46 (64 per cent) were persons discharged from custody after serving their sentences, many of whom will have been released subject to meeting certain licence conditions.

“Of those released from custody, 28 of the 72 had sentence lengths of less than 4 years.

“A further 26 were not sentenced, which includes a number of persons held on remand prior to a charge or conviction.”

Dozens of officers, some response and some with weapons, were seen swooping an address near to the Bearwood part of the city this evening.

Hagley Road was closed for a period of time and then reopened. BBC Newsnight has claimed the vehicle used in the London terror attacks could have been rented from the same road.

The road is said to have closed at 11pm and reopened by 2am, with witnesses in the area saying people had been taken away by the address.

They believe the officers may have been from a counter terrorism unit.

Attorney-General George Brandis has launched an extraordinary attack against the Australian Human Rights Commission as he blasts as “disgraceful” the decision by some Senate crossbenchers not to support the government’s changes to section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act.

Senator Brandis had a meeting with Nick Xenophon last night and will see him again today as he attempts to “persuade” him to back definitional changes to Section 18C, which would replace the words “offend”, “insult” and “humiliate” with “harass”.

The government will need support from the bloc of three Nick Xenophon Team senators if its Human Rights Legislation Amendment Bill is to pass the parliament in its current form, but so far the minor party has rejected the change.

Independent Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie also opposes the reform.

“It is disgraceful that Labor and the Greens and some of the Senate crossbench have decided not to support this legislation but think about where we’ve got to in this country where a political cartoonist gets persecuted for publishing a provocative but important cartoon,” Senator Brandis told 2GB radio.

“Where a newspaper columnist gets a finding against him for writing a provocative article. Where undergraduate students at a university get persecuted because one of them makes a wisecrack. This is out of control and people are fed up to the back teeth with political correctness and I’m proud the government is standing up against political correctness and the development of this culture of grievance that people on the left are invested in promoting.”

Senator Brandis also hit out at the “nobodies” at the AHRC, declaring he did not want Australia to turn into a country where the commission’s officials could control people’s speech.

He said cartoonists, newspaper columnists and the average man in the street should not be the “subject of government regulation or some intrusive moral guardian at the Human Rights Commission who thinks that it’s their god given right — they probably don’t believe in God — but it’s their right to tell other Australians what they’re allowed to think and say”.

They stood in the centre of Brussels. Row on row.

Hands held high, making hearts to the heavens. Showing the slaughtered they were not forgotten. Reminding themselves they were here with love. Looking to show humanity wins. That love conquers all.

They lay in the centre of London, face down where they fell. Stabbed by a knife, rammed with a car, flung, broken, into the Thames, life bleeding out on the curb.

A car rammed deliberately into pedestrians on the bridge. Ten innocents down.

A police officer stabbed at the House of Commons. Confirmed dead.

Another woman now, dead at the scene.

Shots fired. An Asian man rushed to hospital.

A woman, plucked from the water.

And I grew colder. And more tiny.

No anger for me this time. No rage like I’ve felt before. No desperate urge to get out there and scream at the idiots who refused to see this coming.

Not even a nod for the glib idiots who say this will not defeat us, that we will never be broken, that cowardice and terror will not get the better of Britain.

Because, as loyal as I am, as patriotic as I am, as much as my whole younger life was about joining the British military and fighting for my country — I fear we are broken.

Not because of this ghoulish spectacle outside our own Parliament. Not because of the lives rammed apart on the pavement, even as they thought about what was for tea. Or what train home they might make.

But because this is us now.

This is our country now.

This is what we have become.

To this, we have been reduced.

Because all the while those forgiving fools in Brussels stood with their stupid hands raised in hearts to the sky, another mischief was in the making. More death was in the pipeline.

When we take in Muslim refugees we are betting big on our security agencies being able to weed out all the radicals.

We are also betting that the children of those we do take in will not radicalise, too:

More than 500 Iraqi and Syrian refugees bound for Australia in the past year under the government’s humanitarian program have been refused entry after an alert from the Five Eyes intelligence network that their names were on an international security watchlist.

At least 30 of those refugees had also turned up on ASIO’s ­national security terrorism watchlist, with a further but undisclosed number red-flagged by intelligence agencies as having adverse national security profiles.

The security net included a number of refugee applications made under the one-off ­special humanitarian program announced in 2015 to resettle 12,000 displaced and persecuted Syrians trying to flee the civil war.

Is the gamble worth it? Would it not be safer – and would our money not go further – if we helped refugees where they are rather than admit a lucky few?
