Reclaim Australia protesters have clashed with anti-racism groups at opposing rallies in Melbourne.

Police have been forced to use capsicum spray to quell crowds and break up tense encounters between the various protesting groups including the Coalition Against Racism and Fascism and right-wing Reclaim Australia.

Police have deployed capsicum spray and the horse squad, as well as hundreds of uniformed officers, in a bid to control violent protests near Parliament House.

Right-wing group Reclaim Australia had only just begun its rally at 11am when counter-demonstrators from anti-racism groups and anarchists attempted to breach police lines on Spring Street.

A small number of hooded and masked anti-racism protesters broke through and nearly reached screaming members of Reclaim, which included a man with Nazi tattoos taunting them with calls of “lefty scum”.

The anti-Islam group attracted about 50 protesters at its 11am rally, but numbers grew just after midday when about 60 supporters of the hardline United Patriots Front joined them.

The UPF was escorted to the rally from behind police lines and on the opposite side from the anti-racism protest groups.

“Need back up? We’re here now,” one of them said as they entered the secure protest zone.

The two crowds were separated 20 metres by two deep police lines, which left both sides screaming obscenities but not able to clash.

Mike Holt, head of Restore Australia, told Fairfax Media he was disappointed by the turn out of “everyday” Australians: “I can’t believe how small the crowd is. It’s terrible.”

Later when addressing the crowd, he said the protest was against the “creeping Islamisation of Australia”.

“This is a chance to tell people that there can be a different way… this is about keeping Australia, Australian,” he said.

Blair Cottrell, from the UPF, told the crowd it needed “faith” and called for the Prime Minister to become involved.

“A faith can only be defeated by another faith just as strong. The faith we need now is the faith of our nation,” Mr Cottrell said.

“This is a gathering of Australian people, of Australian votes. Where is Mr Abbott?”

• But he made several mystery trips to the Middle East, including Yemen and a seven-month tour of Jordan last year

• Posted rambling messages about Islam and life being a ‘test’ in the days before the shooting 
• His father was investigated by the Joint Terrorism Task Force in the 1990s for suspicious overseas donations
• Dailymail.com has exclusively obtained documents revealing his parents were caught in a messy divorce in 2009 with Abdulazeez’s mother alleging her husband beat her and sexually assaulted her in front of the children

Chattanooga gunman Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez took several mysterious trips to the middle east before blogging about Allah and Islam in the days before his deadly gun attack, it has been revealed.

He has been described by classmates and former school coaches as an ‘All American’ student who came from a well-to-do family – but his behavior seemed to become more erratic and more religious.

It has been revealed the 24-year-old gunman, who shot and killed four Marines in Chattanooga, Tennessee, spent seven months on a visit to Jordan between April and November 2014. He is also believed to have visited Yemen, while the Kuwait News Agency reported he traveled there and to Jordan at least four other times between 2003 and Spring 2010.

Abdulazeez was also working as a nuclear engineer for FirstEnergy Corp in Ohio in 2013, but failed a background check, so was fired after training.

Authorities are now scrambling to find out if he spent any time with extremists on his travels, the Wall Street Journal reports. They are trawling though his seized cell phone and computer for proof of any radical contacts in the region.

You can understand why Dr Anne Aly is the ABC’s go-to person on terrorism. Apparently the best way to fight the Islamic State is not to admit they hate us, and to choose our language more carefully so we don’t “limit” our options:

Astonishing. I’m guessing Aly’s view is that if we pretend they don’t hate us we won’t have to fight them.  I’m now wondering how she thinks Jews should have talked of Hitler.

In fact, rather than say the Islamic State hates us, we should admit the niceness of it:

“And I think we have to get our heads round the fact that there might be something nice about ISIS that these people are attracted to.” Not that Aly thinks Islamic State is nice. “I am completely, completely opposed to it on theological grounds, on social grounds — it’s personal,” she adds, with sudden fierceness.

Oh, and while waffling is this frightfully post-modernist way, be sure to attack non-Muslims instead:

Violent extremism in Australia is beginning to mirror that of the US, counter-terrorism expert Anne Aly from Curtin University said.

She highlighted a New America Foundation study released last month that found right-wing extremists had killed twice as many people since September 11 as jihadists.

“Violent extremism isn’t just a Muslim problem in Australia,” she said. “The numbers are staggering and growing in right-wing extremism.”

Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, identified by authorities as the shooter in Thursday’s attack on military personnel in Chattanooga, Tennessee, provided a now-eerie quote to his school yearbook.

“My name causes national security alerts. What does yours do?” the provided quote said.

Abdulazeez’s yearbook quote surfaced on social media shortly after the FBI identified him as the shooterwho killed four Marines and injured a police officer. (Blaze)

The Justice Department said the shooting probe is a “national security” investigation that will be led by the FBI.

Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher said at a press conference “someone brutally and brazenly attacked members of our armed forces.”

The shooting started at the recruiting center on Lee Highway. The shooter then drove to another facility about eight miles away. The four Marines were killed there at a reserve recruiting and training facility on Amnicola Highway.

The shooter was also killed on Amnicola Highway. Police have not said if the shooter was killed by police or killed himself.

“We made him do it”

But the real problem is “Islamophobia”

Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez was not on the radar of the FBI. He was a naturalised U.S. citizen from Kuwait who graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2012 with a degree in electrical engineering.

“His motive is unclear”, says Heavy, but in light of the Islamic State tweet that went out at the time the shooting began, and the Islamic State calls to Muslims in the West to target military personnel, it seems clear enough.

Four Marines were killed this morning, when a heavily-armed gunman opened fire on two military centers in Chattanooga, Tennessee in what is being described as an ‘act of domestic terrorism’.

Officials have not yet officially named the now-deceased shooter, but law enforcement sources identified the suspect to CBS as 24-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, originally from Kuwait. He lived in Hixson, Tennessee, which is just a few miles across the river from Chattanooga.

Officials have said the shooter is dead and that the active shooting situation has ended. The shooter did not work at either of the facilities, according to the FBI. Today’s attack came with no warning, the FBI said.

At least they had enough sense to shoot him dead.
